Morning Glories: for the love of purpurea #3

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - Lovely vine and bloom! Where does this Ipomoea purpurea Azul-Zapotec hail from that makes it such a rare purpurea cultivar? The 3-lobed leaves are rather unusual.

It was collected in Mexico, I believe. Thanks, Becky.

Last summer I had a trilobed purpurea (I think Kniola's Black) that I cross with all purpureas volunteers on the garden. 10 different crossing, only 4 have been fruitful - Joyce Cobb, Shibori Purple Flacked and 2 other unknown with only an production of two seeds each.Crossing with purpurea is difficult.
How do I know if this effect "lobed" at purpurea is a cross with Ipomoea Nil or simply a spontaneous mutation.( I think it's a mutation )
In the Kyushu collection there are several Purpurea lobed. (Q 1152, 53, 54, 68, 61 ... etc ...)

Nice one Joseph! I love the dark blue!

If anyone is interested in growing out the White Purpurea I have some to share....they all don't come out squarish though.

Thanks, Ronnie.

I grew out a seed of some of the trilobed purpurea Kyushu strains this winter, and all were cordate shaped. The flowers were different from the reference photo too, except for 1, which leads me to believe they had some busy pollinators in that big growing field.

(Zone 7a)

Thanks from me, too, Ronnie.

Joseph, do you think that the shift from trilobe to cordate shapes of your Ipomoea purpurea cultivars from Kyushu U might also have resulted from environmental conditions under which theirs and yours were grown? From what you've said before, it does look like Kyushu U may be having some open pollination issues, but I'm still wondering if environment could cause a purpurea leaf shape to shift like that, too.

Dany, I can't wait to see the results from your lobed purpurea crosses. Thanks for those links - those Kyushu images are always awesome. My computer won't access videos, but I'm sure your pooch one was a hoot.

Joseph that MG is a beauty. I love the colour.
Ronnie that white with pink is awsome.
thanks to all for sharing, while I shiver with the snow. Down here tho, it seems like summer. ( Basement Garden is all lit up)

Joseph - A Mexican I. purpurea, huh? I wonder if it grows to the Mexican Hat Dance song! ;-)

Dany - LOL! about your no maintenance kinda doggie! Too funny! The likelihood of a cross between an I. nil and an I. purpurea is pretty rare. That would be a tough one to ID the species or if it was a possible cross. I can't help ya with that one at all. I've tried and tried to cross I. nil with I. purpurea and have had absolutely NO LUCK whatsoever. So I think it is a rare seed to be made.

Ronnie - Wow! Isn't that a pretty one! Love the light pastel pink in that white bloom.

Debra - What's the temperature in your basement?

DANY: wanted to say ...http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7406115 ...NICE Bloom!!
HAPPY 2010 to all ~~

Beautiful dark bloom and a wonderful pic Darren.

very pretty flower, Darren - all it needs is one of those mechanical hummingbirds of Dany's...maybe one that floats where it's s'posed to, without propellers?

Suspicions confirmed, the Ao MURASAKI Jo Hanten Shibori really PURPLE does exist it would have spontaneously appeared in Japan in 2006.

My Jo Hanten shibori looked a lot like Jamie Lynn and no Hikari.
My sds from Joseph. I only grew one sd, no telling what a 2nd
seed might have produced.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)
