Morning Glories: for the love of purpurea #3

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Great pic Dany.

Great post Debra, and you are so right about good friends
here at Daves. A wonderful place to spend time.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Beautiful flower pic Dany!
Jackie, it is so cold here.. brrrr!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Cold here too Debra. Sure hope spring comes early. lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Jackie, do u have any mg plants going right now? I am still getting blooms on my little pink one downstairs.. I think it was ID as a picotee

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, Still a few on Yag blizzard. Hoping for a few more on Lav Chiffon. I would like to plant a few of my no id's and a couple that Colin was kind enough to send. Hoping to see blooms mature on ochracea, a real beauty

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Jackie, it must be really warm there... eh? You are so lucky to have those still going!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

No, not warm. lol I greenhouse grow though so it's nice and toasty
in there. When the sun is shining, it gets up over 100 in there in no time.
As soon as the sun goes down, the temp drops like a rock. My heater
comes on automatically.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh WOW! A GH! gee, someday! LOL

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, It looks pretty rough but it's effective in the winter when I need it the most.
I envy you your basement g house. When there's snow on the ground, there would be no more slipping, sliding trips down to the ghouse for me.

You be careful walking out to the greenhouse, Jackie! That ice can be very dangerous. No tumbles, please! I want to camp out in Debra's basement! LOL!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, I'm terrified that I will fall on the ice. I fall in the heat of summer,
stepping on the hose, not picking my feet up high enough to clear
the stepping stones. Just all kinds of silly reasons that I fall.
Yes, lets meet at Debra's with our sleeping bags. Enjoy all her
nice flowers and plants and I could take a nice long winters nap.
I promise I wouldn't be any trouble Debra. lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

okay well , come on down! lady bugs are really enjoying it down there..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Debra. You're off the hook . Staying home to get in some
cat naps. I'm so sleep deprived.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

me too.. been watching the history channels' story and live documentation on the 911 event. I am so grateful to be an American and so saddened by this event even tho it was a long time ago..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm still haunted by what happened that day. None of us should
ever forget .

East Bridgewater, MA

I thought I was the only one staying up past midnight to watch the History Channel.

Many of history's lessons are painful to relive, but we (the human race) must learn from them, or we are doomed to repeat them.

(That's a paraphrase of a famous quote; I don't claim originality for the idea.)

Peace On Earth.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Good Will to All ..... The lessons seem to repeat thru-out history it seems.

Jackie - It seems the older we get, the more dangerous a fall could be. Make sure you have some tread on any shoes you wear outside and carry a cell phone or some other way to contact help should you take a tumble and get hurt.

I confess to staying up late, too. I, also, watch the history channel. Great documentaries. I never liked history in school, but the history channel has sure changed that for me. :-)

I, too, will always remember 9/11. That event is forever etched into my memory!

Y'all would love my Christmas cards this year. (I bought a small box of them since I don't send out many cards anymore.) I saw them and immediately snapped them up. It is a black and white drawing of the front porch of a two story old wooden home showing a rocker and sled on the porch. It is lightly snowing in the picture. You can see inside the front window of a large lighted Christmas tree. This is all done in black and white. But ... attached to one of the posts at the front of the porch is a flag pole and an American flag hanging that is in color (red, white, and blue). When I saw it, it touched my heart. Even as bad as things are here in the USA right now because of the recession ... I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. I am very proud to be an American! :-) :-)

I always love scenes like an old wooden house in the country with snow all around. Living in Florida, I can only dream of such a scene in real life. I do remember snow as a child and it was beautiful and magical and so still and quiet. Truly Magical!

Becky, good tip about carrying my cell phone. I need to get in the habit of carrying it in my pocket.
I would love your Christmas cards. I love the cards showing an old southern or country home with the big front porch. The red, white, and
blue is appropriate now more than ever. Without our military, we
would not be living in a free country., Our freedom bought and pd for with the blood of our deceased soldiers. It's a debt that we can't
ever repay.
We take snow for granted here although we can go a couple of yrs
without nary a flake. Hope you get to enjoy some snow soon even
if it's just a tad.
I think they had snow in Houston last week or the week before.
So anything can happen.

I have a nice purp that I have growing indoors this winter. I like the red and blue colors in the flower.

Beautiful bright color in that bloom Joseph.

Thanks, Jackie.

Very Nice Joseph!
Merry Christmas to you all .. have a good day with your family and friends as we celebrate
the birthday of Jesus, and I wish us all a Happy Morning Glory filled New Year.
Debra

Thanks, Debra, and Merry Christmas to you too.

Jackie - LOL! We actually had a snow flurry here many years ago and that was so cool to see a thin white carpet on the lawn. Of course it melted pretty quickly, but everyone was amazed that it snowed in central Florida.

Joseph - Pretty color on that I. purpurea! Interesting wide star markings.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Nice one Joseph!!

Thanks Becky & Ronnie. The vines started out in very growth but now they are looking a little rough. I think I need to give them a touch of nitrogen.

2 months later....hi. the idea of blooms lightening or changing is totally belived by me. I have watched my ramblers get lighter over the last years, and if they had more shade they stayed darker...if this is what is meant here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7226967 or the crossing of a the lighter neighbors (keep reading) ...but i am BAFFLED by a white JC? thtas a LOT of dilute you must be refering to seed mix of pollens yes... Soo that was a pretty neat White bloom anyway! Tomorrow going to see if I got any SOY seeds yet...some 'Regular' Joyce Cobbs are seed hardening off now for me, finally. got about a dozen. BUT...this one is my NOID....any Ideas? If its the same type of Ipomoea it may have crossed with the JCs...?
cheers!

Hi Darren, I do believe your picture is an I. Nil and JC is a I. Purpurea, they don't cross best to my knowledge...yours is pretty I have seen it fall under many different names. I don't believe the white JC is a cross just a change in genes(?) Pretty neat huh!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Darren - It is my experience and understanding that the Joyce Cobb (I. purpurea) does mutate in the second generation and can very well produce a white bloom with the blue star pattern. It probably resembles Milky Way a little bit for that reason. Or it could produce a solid white bloom. I had that happen with volunteers of the JC I grew my first year.

The beautiful blue striped bloom in your photo could be a cross. It is definitely an I. nil bloom. It resembles:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/73694/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/103768/

I have actually had I. nil (and also I. purpurea) seeds sprout and grow a year AFTER I planted them! I was shocked! I live in a mild climate, so I guess anything is possible.

oh yes many one year old volunteers! lol, thanks for the info Bekcy~! I will include some of the JC seeds for you to 'play' with or trade out in an upcoming mailing...the White JC IS pretty no DOUBT!
:D

I think the commercial name of that one is "Teresa"
This is the "negative" by Joyce Cobb.

Dany, in your post here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7406115 - those poufs at the star tips look like the tip of a groomed poodle tail here: http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/breeds/Poodle_Miniature.htm .

What would you think about creating a line of "Poodle" purpureas?

lol

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

hehe.. I likes that idea!

That's a riot, bluespiral LOL!

(Zone 7a)

Thank you, you two. Hopefully my quip translated alright for Dany and he'll grace Ronnie's thread with more purpurea pics - Dany (and to all), you've shared so many distinctive MGs with us - am very much looking forward to the next one.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - Love your reverse Joyce Cobb! Those color bursts on the edges of the petals is quite dramatic against the white. Leave to you to get something so unusual!

LOL! about the "Poodle Purpureas" name! :-D

This MG has been a total delight to grow out, thanks to Ron_Convolvulaceae for giving me the opportunity to grow and photograph a rare one. This is Ipomoea purpurea Azul-Zapotec. The flower has an awesome deep blue color with red color in the primary folds. The leaves are typically 3-lobed, however, the vine started making less lobed leaves with the onset of very cold weather which made the basement colder too.

Here is the flower, up close and personal.

Look at the reverse side of the flower, I really enjoy the vivid white on blue color contrast.
