Dave, I have another question. The sun keeps getting lower in the sky which means less light. Do you think I can use incandescent light? Grow lights are just fluorescent. Does it matter what type of light to use on plants? What kind is best?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

so Ican how cold are you there?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

hey dave cool pic, had to turn my netbook upside down though to view it the right way hehehe

LOL AGAIN!!!!! Actually their talking about an El Nino winter up here. It's been sunny and very warm. It was almost 60 on Monday (now before you baulk keep in mind it's almost Nov. in AK) sunny and fabulous. Our first snow last year was Oct. 15th. Very strange. Currently it's 43 degrees though :)

O.k. Dave, what is that a picture of or am I being a bone head?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

thats sad its warmer in Alaska than it is here

Ican, have your friend turn over the pot so the plant comes out. Then look at the roots. She will be able to quickly tell if it is root bound and needs a bigger pot. Also, I had my trees outside during the summer. I didn't realize but the sun was on the trees in the late afternoon and the leaves started getting brown on the tips and more. As soon as I took them out of the sun, they did not get any more brown on the leaves. I won't feed my trees until spring because they are not growing as much now being inside with less light. Hope that helps.

Carol, if there are plants that you're not sure about their care; make a list of them (which is numbered) and I can give you a variety of general plant care strategies.
I'll describe the plant care method, and place the number of your plant under it.

Thanks Venice! Duh, look at the roots....I am a bone head!!!!

Ican has the new beau gone to your head (see I used a big word just for you!)

Now put up your hands! This is a stick up, gimme all your plants lady and nobody gets hurt

Keaau, HI

Hey Ican, those are called "fractals". Google the term and you'll find more!

Carol, if you are serious about high quality lighting for plants, consider Halide grow lights. They produce a spectrum similar to the Sun, better than other lights.

oooooooo....big words.....
Yeah, men'll do that to ya (sorry Dave)

Speaking of the new beau, he's here with his puppies so gotta get dinner started. I'm starving man!

Have a great night gypsies! :)

have a good time Ican!

I was looking today at the light and water requirements for my plants. I didn't look up my trees because I keep them happy by what I am doing. The only thing I can recall is that it said don't over water. Tongues can dry up or be over watered without a problem and they don't need much light. Elephants need light and just water them when the soil is dry. Palm and Hibiscus need light. Shamrock and wandering Jew need light also. Dasylirion and dracaena need less light. And of course the Brom., water in the vase, no water in the brass pot, some light and just ignore it! I don't think anything would kill the blackies but they do need some light.

Does that sound about right?

The Hibiscus had yellowing leaves when I got it and those dried up. But I read that they can loose leaves in the winter but will grow them back. I was concerned at first but there is a tiny new growth on the tips of the branches.

So that is it!

What's for dinner Ican?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I was going to say fractals. But I think of them more like similar (but not the same) repeating patterns but getting smaller and smaller or bigger and bigger.

Keaau, HI

The Dasylirion may need to be in the light group.

Cut the water down on everything during Winter months. When Spring returns and things start to grow they need more water and fertilizer.

Expect tropical plants such as Hibiscus to commonly have older leaves die, especially before they produce new growth.

well then my banana trees should be getting ready to go through a growth spurt...LOL

Keaau, HI

In the Winter months, Bananas produce fruit in Hawai'i.

The smallest Halide grow light I saw cost $179.95!! I certainly am NOT that serious!!!!
I try to make do with what I have. I made an exception with those cheap plants.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Ican, have a very nice dinner and a great evening!!! Stop by again sometime.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave, all I can say is that you are very lucky over there. You have plenty of light and rain and warm weather. And I guess that is why they call it a tropical forest!!!

Keaau, HI

Light is important.

All things do well with the right enlightenment!

LOL Dave

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave is that a stain-glass window?

You never answered my question about the brom. blossom. Do I keep it in water? Or let is dry? It is in water now. It looks like little pink things that will come out between the light pink part. I guess I will keep it in water and see what it does.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, I am heading to bed. I am sleepy.

Dave and Trina, have a nice evening. Will see you tomorrow.

Night and have a restful sleep!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Night Carol talk to you tomorrow

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

ok

Keaau, HI

Carol, if you can wire it; Halide lights can be gotten at a store like Walmart, in the Automotive Dept. at the price of about two for fifteen $.

They are car headlights.

They are on a 12 volt circuit, and can be run with solar energy, or the battery from a car.

By using high quality lighting for plants, you can force flowers (for special occasions, etc.), and you can give tropical plants a desired environment in the Winter.

Keaau, HI

The photo was produced by a camera flash over a pattern, and very close. (Took several tries before one turned out well.)

Leave the "Brom" alone Carol! Make sure that the vase of leaves has water in it. Keep it warm, well ventilated, and with good lighting but not direct hot sunlight.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

lol....she just has to touch it....we've created a monster with her

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Hello?

Keaau, HI

You still up Trina?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yep I sure am

Keaau, HI

What does a Wicca do in the middle of the night?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Keaau, HI

More enlightenment!

Excuse me Trina. I was being serious. Wicca / Pagan worship Nature.

I'm an animist. Just wanted to know.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

oh ok I guess it would depend on the particular persons belief systems....there are as many if not more divisions amongst wiccans then there christian sects. and a lot of people forget that some wiccans do thier spells strictly under certain moons for certain things, some do it robed others go sky clad, all depends on tradition and moonphase as to what a wiccan does at night

sometimes humor gets lost when the human connection isn't there
