Fall 2009 AV&G Round Robin - The Journey Continues!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Can you post a picture of your Persian Lace blooms? Technically, my PL's do fit the FC description, with the exception of the light blue veining . . . but I'm hoping that since these are the first blooms, that the later ones will show the veining more. Right now, the blooms do have the blue/lavender color, with the white edging. That, and the size . . . right now, they are a perfect miniature size. I have removed the blooms from the one I am keeping to encourage the plant to grow to it's semi-mini size.

Persian Lace (8264) 07/28/1995 (S. Sorano) Double white frilled pansy/pale blue-blushed lower petals, light blue-veined top petals. Dark green, plain, wavy, serrated/red back. Semiminiature

I'm getting very anxious for the box. I'm trying to recover from the flu, and feel really rotten. Thoughts of the box arriving this week are perking me up a bit. This is fun, waiting for the box and seeing what everyone gets from the box. It is a great way for folks like me who don't have any local vendors around to get things we wouldn't normally be able to find. I'll let you all kow as soon as the box lands in Indiana. Lou.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Just caught up on all the goodies everyone has gotten, and can't wait to look them all up. How exciting!! seems like the magic box is moving quickly.

Hi All,
I am hoping this works out but if not that is ok also.... I am down at the bottom kinda in the robin box. I wanted to know if you could take me out of the round robin? I will be to busy and I don't want to hold it up for any reason . So if possible please take me out of the box as names go..... Thank you and I am sorry...
Love ya all,
Sue

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Sorry to see you leave, Sue.
This RR seems to be taking longer than usual. I hope the weather holds out for those in the north. Some parts of US have snow storms, and freezing temps.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Our weather has been off and on... We already had our first frost and now they say we will be in the 70's next week.... I just don't want to be busy when the box came so is better if I back out... So make sure who was in front of me knows not to send to me...LOL
Hugs,
Susan

wooo hooo! so glad you got it today!! Since I was a day late, sorry if I delayed anything. sounds like you made a great hall!!!!!!

That's a nice collection you picked, dispatcher. I hope the weather holds up for the rest of us on the list. Down here in Florida we have nothing to worry about. It really doesn't get cold until Jan. or Feb. and then only in the 40s, maybe.
I worry about the northern part of the country. I see Colorado already having fun in the snow.

Atco, NJ

dispatcher1,

Do you have a tracking number for me? I'm hoping to get the box by Tuesday, but it would be great to be able to track its progress. Thanks so much!

Pat

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Hope it arrives quickly. Tracking # 0308 2040 0000 3074 5804. Good Luck. Lou

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Woo!Hoo!
After Pat get box today, then it's three more to me. I'm getting antsy in the pantsy. LOL
I guess by next week it should be here in FL. I'm busy making room for the new additions.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey!! Don't forget about me!! LOL!!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

It's so nice to see everyone excited about the possibilities in the box. Ellen, it should come to you by the end of this week. Do you want to meet at the coffee shop in Greenspring after you're done? Friday won't be a good day for me, but late Saturday would be. My step-daughter is getting married this Saturday morning:) Sunday is church in the morning.

Highland, IL

Its like Christmas, don't you just feel all giddy waiting for it???? Have fun!!!

Laura H

Atco, NJ

I received the box today and here is what I took out.
Myakka Trail - 2 leaves
Rob's Gray Ghost - 1 leaf
Green Dragon - 2 leaves and threw away 2 leaves (really mushy)
Teen Sweetheart - 2 leaves and threw away the rest (really mushy)
Sugar Plum - 1 leaf
Fairy Fountains - 1 leaf and threw away the rest (really squished)
Kentucky Gooseberries - threw this one away
Senk's Longlegs - 1 small sucker
Foxwood Trail - 1 small baby, very squished, may not make it
Shiawasee Trail - threw it away, brown mush

There are some standard av leaves that look like they will be just fine but I don't have room for standards. I think the heat pack banging around in the box might be responsible for the damage to the av leaves. I'll try taping it to the bottom of the box to prevent more damage. As for all the streps, etc, I'll go through them and cut off the brown parts. I'll add my new leaves and take the box to the post office tomorrow. Good luck everyone!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Heat packs can fry everything so easily. I used them a few times but never again! Heat packs should always be taped on the bottom and then insulation, too.

Are you all sure we even need heat packs? If the temps are not below freezing it just does damage to the leaves.

Atco, NJ

OK, the box is repacked. I taped the heat pack securely to the bottom of the box. I added lots of packing peanuts to fill up all that empty space so that everything doesn't flop around inside the box. Hopefully that will help save the leaves.

I had to throw away Pusilla. It was a tiny plant in a small plastic cup. I'm sorry to say that it had totally dumped out of its container and completely dried up. Also too far gone to save were leaves from Espicia Acajou, Tar Jar, and Peggy. I trimmed up the other leaves. Hope they are OK.

I will send the tracking number to Raisingsouls.later today after I go to the post office.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Wow, we are halfway thru already!!!

Gail, the heat pack is not being used. It is there for a 'just in case it's needed'.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OH.....thank you, Nichole.............

Williston, ND

Pat that pusilla is a micro can be saved even if the top is dry,it should have mini tubers which will grow new plants

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Is that strep Tar Jar? It is so pretty! Too bad it's gone...

Williston, ND

Tar Jar doesnt have good odds of blooming true, best bet is to find someone with a plant and get a division of it

JIM

Atco, NJ

Jim,

I dug through the trash and found the plastic bag with what was left of the pusilla. I didn't see any signs of life, but I put some soiless mix back in the pot and we'll see what happens. If it does anything I'll let you know. Thanks for letting me know about it.
Have a great night!

Pat

Williston, ND

if you can put it in a terrium it will do better in my opinion

Atco, NJ

OK, I'll try it. I do have a nice glass container that should work well. I grow micro avs. Am I correct to assume that this plant will like similar growing conditions?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My limited experience would be to put some sphagnum moss on the top layer (just a little).......

That's a very cute little plant. I just happen to have some sphagnum moss. I really hope this works. I just love the tiny plants! Thanks for the suggestion, Gail.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

You all are hitting new territory for me. Why put moss on top? Somewhere Jim posted something about that and it had something to do with damping off (?) I was wanting to ask about that. Bonnie was a sweetheart and sent me seed which is coming up now. Was I supposed to put moss on top? I know nothing about this.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

A sinningia pulsilla is a tuber........I don't know anyone who uses moss to grow seed..............aspenjocop.........
And.........there are a zillion ways to do anything..........sometimes I put a little moss on top of open vases with little micro plants if I don't put a top on the vase.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

moss is great if you already have an established plant. micro sinns love it.

I have just started using moss to cover dirt in other plants, most seem to like it. Nothing dead yet anyway!!
