Fall 2009 AV&G Round Robin - The Journey Continues!!!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

The dragon wing begonia may be okay if you can cut the mushy part off the stem and still have enough to start. Lou

Hi Anna ,

I know about the strep leaves that were in the box when I got it didn't look good , most if not all the ones I kept are not going to live long enough to make babies either , they are pale green with a lot of brown spots but I hoped I might get them to grow and knew they would be just something to throw by the time they got to you and I know the ones I left in the box are by this time icky too that is why I added a bunch of leaves hoping to replace the things that you would end up having to throw , I don't have a lot of large streps being new to them this year and most of my new streps were just tiny when I got them so I added a few strep leaves but mostly AVs , maybe the next person can add a bunch of strep leaves the the coming people but I hope you find some things you will enjoy and if you think something isn't viable then just throw it and don't worry but as Nicole said I don't have begonias and so can't tell you anything about them so wait to see what other people say I guess .

Glad the box got to you safely ,

Connie

I hope I didn't do something wrong to ruin the things in the box before it got to you Viostrep. If I did, I am so sorry. I guess I'll have to stick to buying for now until I learn more about trading AV's and gesneriads. I am really sorry if I did something wrong. Thanks and love, julie

Chicago, IL

Whew- I got to the Post Office with 10 minutes to spare. I soaked the AV leaves that were not wearing little towels then dried them and the bag and put them back in. I sent on a couple things that were questionable hoping the Mrs Bonnie would be able to use them. If not they will be no good.

I doubt that I'll be able to resuscitate many of the streps but I kept them out of the box and I'll make a desicion in a little while as what to try and what to toss. Just a few AV leaves didn't make it as most were quite fresh still. I added more AV plants and leaves.

It's quite warm and it's only going 60 or 70 miles to Mrs Bonnie so hopefully she'll have it tomorrow and all will be in pretty good shape.

the number is 0309 1830 0000 7181 8472

Now, to go through and sort it all out.

Chicago, IL

Julie not sure what you could have done wrong! Things like this just aren't meant to be in boxes for weeks at a time.

I did notice some moisture in some strep and AV bags. I don't know if this is good for Streps but it is better for AVs to be either completely dry or to wear little paper shoes so to speak. I think someone told me that perm tape works well and I think that is what Connie used. Other than those feet if the leaves are damp they can start rotting more quickly I have heard.

The streps might prefer that I do not know. I did wipe out all the baggies of the AVs though but really very few of them were bad. I think it's just a lot of time that some of these things have been in there and they are ready to find a home.

Ocean Springs, MS

The leaves were dry when I packed them, however, our temps were in the high 80's and it had to go from South Mississippi to Michigan. Could that have something to do with it? I really feel bad about it. love, julie

Williston, ND

On the streps just cut the brown parts off,if they are limp soak them for a few hours and dry off then plant,if you are unsure what to do and want more time ,cut off the brown spots and stick them in the crisper ,they will keep in there for a while, weeks sometimes

JIM

Williston, ND

dont feel bad julie,It could be they were in there too long, could be anything, dont give it a second thought

JIM

I'll start another thread for help with the streps becuase I love them but don't have a lot of room but I'll try and save these.

Here's what was lost:
Rip Tide
Fairy King (AV, I think)
C Tamiana
a few Fairy Fountains
Alsobias Chiapas
Dolled Up (AV)
A couple Sheer Romance (but there are many of them)
An AV I forgot to write down (oops)

Here's what was brown and I'll see what happens:
Happytime
Butter Blue
Daphne
Franken Alison
Sandra - one leaf is completely dead and the other is over half mushy - I know nothing about these, so not sure if it will make it without any leaves.

Saturn (only 1 leaf, the other is still in box)
Heinze Little Nugget (only 1 leaf, others are still in box)
Cranberry Creme (only 1 leaf, others still in box)
Persian Lace (all three are limp, let's hope one revives enough to plant)

I took the following - 1 each of:
Heartland Heirloom Lace
Celery Wasp Sport
Senk's Snowy Egret
Senk's Cascade
RD's Illusion
Sora Kalissa
Senk's Neverland Dream
Winnergreen
Kentucky Gooseberries
Field and Stream baby plant
Neptune's something Chimera - I was going to put it back in but a couple leaves were broken and it was starting to look a bit sad

I put in seven or eight small baby plants each with at least 6 or 7 leaves. Some were from Gail originally as she sent me a bunch of trailers still connected and I separated them and a few are from my first leaves that my neighbor gave me. It was exciting to have something that I grew to put in even though it wasn't much. My wonderful neighbor gave me a couple leaves of hers so I'd be close to matching what I took. I thought I was even but just realized I may have shorted the box by one.

Mrs Bonnie I don't know if I packed those baby plants very well but am hoping you can look and if they are bad please take pity on me and repack them.

Jim,

I do have the green devil's backbone. I can put some cuttings in the box for you since you are ending up with it.

Dear Julie ,

Please don't think you did anything wrong with the RR box , most of the things I took out were just in the box too long and without air , light and all the things they need , it really didn't have anything to do with what you did or didn't do so if I said something to make you feel badly or that you did something wrong please accept my apology I wasn't saying you did anything wrong and I am sorry if you thought that , it is hard on plants to be in a box for so long so please don't hesitate to join in on the coming RR s and as Jim said please don't give it a second thought and enjoy caring for the goodies you found :) and again please forgive me if I made you feel you did anything wrong , I didn't mean to .

Warm Hugs ,
Connie :)

I think this is all in fun right?!! No need for worries when its suppose to be fun! Fun and Sharing!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just hopping on my brother's computer this morning and so happy to be reading everyones' posts. Sounds like fun.

Rather than a heat pack, i went to Lowe's yesterday and for 12.67 I found the best insulation and lots of it that doesn't have anything harmful in it to hurt someone in any way. It is even wrapped in plastic if I want to use it that way.

The insulation is a fantastic way of sending boxes in both heat and cold.......

Ocean Springs, MS

Oh, you all make me feel so much better! I'm learning so much from all of you from this RR. Thanks for being here to support and teach us who are new!
love, julie

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi Gail;
tell us more about this insulation & maybe a picture if you can?
mrsbonnie

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes, share please!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

As soon as i get a computer, I will share pics, etc. about this great insulation.......in fact, it is what Goldleaf used to use.........I remember hers........but I am still on my brother's computer...........and no way to upload pics without my sister in law creating folders, etc..............

Chicago, IL

I recently bought some leaves and the shipper used this insulation. I wish I knew what it was but there is no label. It looks like insulation but isn't fiberglass and all scratchy and itchy. I imagine that if you went to any home improvement store and asked for insulation that was safe to be handled that they would guide you to the ones that were just like this as I doubt there can be too many kinds. Then again I don't know much about home building so maybe there are hundreds of kinds!

Mrs Bonnie, did you get the box yet?

I added as many strep leaves as I could but I don't have that many big streps and I was sick while I was packing both the RR box and a box for Jan and I just couldn't get anymore in the box and was just so tired , I hope to be able to add more streps maybe the next time I did put in a bunch of AV leaves .

Connie

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

The spring RR should be awesome! I will have lots of stuff to put in then. I checked all my AV babies last night and they are all doing well. They are so much easier to root than streps! :)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Shame on you, Jim! Don't worry about Jim, Connie . . . he's just teasing! There is absolutely nothing wrong with AV leaves! This robin is, after all, supposed to expose each of us to things we may not have thought to grow before.

Yes, the spring RR should be awesome . . . ^_^

Hi everybody, looks like y'all have a great RR traveling around the country! I saw someone asking about heat packs/insulation and Gail mentioned one that Home Depot carries. It's really good, safe to touch, and fairly inexpensive. I think it's 16" wide and 48" in length and can be cut easily: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100661753/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Syrumani, your Persian Lace flowers look different than mine....is there anything that the camera didn't pick up, like markings on the leaves? Or are they solid lavender with the white edging?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Very nice pickings Laura! What fun it is to see what people picks out of the box! Are you getting excited yet Lou?
