I used to start my cannas and elephant ears, early on a heated sand table..Boy, it worked nice
Dee
Blooming Brug
That's what I always use to start my seeds...soiless mix
Dee
what do you do with all your extra seedlings? I bet I have 20 seeds in that packet
Dee
that sounds like it would be great too have one of those, I wonder how a heating pad would work on low, I have thought about using that if I can't find the heatmat inexpensive enough
Elizabeth
Dee
sometimes they don't all germinate, I had a whole tray this spring, only about 10 of them grew, right now I have seedlings everywhere, when they get the size of a pencil then you can bump the pot size up, next spring those seedlings will go in he ground.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth...ooops, I have used heating pads two or three years...like you said, set on low.. It works great under the mini greenhouses.

Dee
those are inexpensive, I am sure that's a lot better, I will try that, the other night my house smell like lavender, I couldn't figure where that smell was coming from, I had put that seedling on the back porch, it is a cross of rosalla & peanut
so that one is a keeper, they had those mini GH on sale at walmart for $6.00 so I bought about 5 of them, usually they want almost $8.00 for them in the spring
Elizabeth
Dee
I will talk to you tommorrow, after 3:00, I should be done digging by then, have a goodnight girl
Elizabeth
You girls, answered my questions about the seeds thanks.
Not raining, but dark and misty-looking. weather supposed
to be better. No rodeos, yet! Good morning all.
Morning Charleen, I'll be in and out today. It's time to put away summer clothes and get out the sweatshirts and coats, so I have a busy day planned. I still have 4 geranium planters to carry to the basement. I have more geraniums than any one person should have. Nothing fancy...just all different colors. I didn't use to even like geraniums, but they are great for color all summer long, and so easy. And I love to rescue them when they put them on clearance, mid season..lol. I think I have a pic of some that were almost dead before I brought them home and babied them....they looked like dead sticks, when I got them...lol..If I can find it, I'll post it in a little while.
Dee
That would be great. I would like to see the one Elizabeth was talking about.
I love exotic looking plants too.
Charleen
I know, I want to see Elizabeth's succulent granium too.Never heard of it, before.
Here's a picture of the geraniums after a couple weeks. I had just moved them up to bigger pots. They really grew well, after re-potting. I let them sit there and bloom all summer, because I really had no where to plant them..lol...But I knew I would need some next Spring. And, 10 cents a piece, is a lot better than $4 each, for zonal geraniums. The ones that I had in my planters, were getting woody from being wintered over,so I pitched most of them.
Dee
Can you guess what is gonna be planted at the base of my brugs, next year...the ones in pots, anyway...lol
Dee
Be back in a bit...gotta get moving...
Dee
Is that a Bird's nest Succulent, sitting back there on the left?
I used to have one of those. Can't remember what ever happened t it.
I have several MIL plants. Did you see that one in that one forum that was blooming
it is Beautiful.
Charleen
o. k.
Yes, it is. That started as two plants a couple years ago, and when I gave it to my neighbor, about a month ago, it was in bad need of division. No, I didn't see the pic of the one blooming, but I would like to..Do you remember where it was? If I grow a house plant, it has to be an easy one, that I know to ignore...like the MIL plants..lol
Dee
Dee, itis listed under "tropicals" and it is the four column down; for now.
Charleen, that is so cool! I had no idea that they bloomed., and such a pretty bloom!
Dee
I had one to bloomed a long time ago.
Believe it has a sweet scent. Guess when it dres
up a bit I will do as Gordo suggested, plant
those Brugs and see what they will do. It won't
take long for the ground to dry. Probably be ready by Sat.
Got a pkg. yet?
Charleen, I didn't get your box today, but I got my box from the tropical plant swap...OOOh, so many beautiful foliage type plants...You know I love pretty foliage. Now, to get these babies potted up, and in a good spot!
Dee
Durn, maybe tomarrow. I was so hoping.
Oh , well. Another day. Huh? Tell me what you
got.
I'm nosey.
Charleen
Charleen
Susan( FruitoftheVine) sent Canna "Orange King Humbert"( how did she know that I have been wanting that one),Pigmy Date Palm, Alocasia"Polly", Dracena Spikes Bi-Color, Croton Bush on Fire,Brug Isabella( !!!!), and a kalonchoe. Feels like Christmas!
I think it's time to set up the 2nd grow light...lol
Dee
yep, I hope you and Elizabeth get yours tomorrow too. With the cost of postage now, you would think they would move prioirty faster than they do..
Dee
They want to charge extra for Next day.
WoooHoooooo, you hit the Jackpot!
Charleen
Dee. I got my Box!!! I never knew there was so many EE, right now my favorite is the spotted one. Can I go ahead and out them in pots?/
Or do I wait til next spring? They are Fantastic. These are going in my new garden, no doubt about it. Are these all for shade, Can they take the sun??
I love them all. Thanks
Charleen
Yeah, the cost of next day delivery IS rediculous! And then, they don't always gaurantee it.Did you get an answer from Gordon yet, about the time lapse filming of a brug opening?
Dee
No, but you know I DID ask him.
Maybe he is searching for it. I hope so.
He will help us out.
Charleen
Wow! great!...To be honest with you, I'm not sure about your zone, with them. You will have to look them up, but I think, since they are babies, I would pot them up til they get a little bigger. Some can take more sun, than others...black magic is blacker in more sun. I had them all in pretty much full sun, but 2 of them didn't grow well for me. Enjoy!
I hope Elizabeth gets hers today, too
Dee
Charleen, I know some of the Elephant ears, if not all of them are hardy for you.
Dee
Elizabeth said she will be on after 3...maybe soon..
Dee
Charleen, How much longer will you have warm weather? I know the banana is hardy for you, because it is the only banana that is hardy here.
Dee
Dee, Maybe next month. Think I can plant it??
If you do I will. Sign gonna be good next
Sunday 18th thru Thurs.22nd. I will be busy.
Charleen
I think I would. They like lots of water, and fertilizing to start off.
Dee
Charleen, when you look up the EE's, let me know if you have trouble finding any of them.Do you use google.com?
I would just type in elephant ear, and whatever the name is on each one and it will usually tell you if it's an alocasia or a colocasia, and how to take care of it. I just read that aurora, (pink stem) and black magic are both hardy for you...you lucky duck.. Hope they all are.
Dee
Oh, good. I will do that. I never knew there were so many EE.
I am going to put them in pots. I shown them to DH and he even
showed a Trace of interest. Wonderful.
Guess What??? It's raining again!!!!
I will be looking, Dee I love them all.
Also got some Cactus today.
Charleen
girl, sounds like you hit the jackpot today!
There are alot more elephant ears, Charleen.I do love them, but I hate trying to store them over the winter, unless they are good size tubers.Several that I'm wintering over this year are smaller tubers.
Dee
I did, I love them all. If I could I would gie you a big
((((((((Dee))))))))))
Thank you. Can't wait til you get yours. let me know.
Charleen
I went to Google and looked up the EE's. I love them.
I want to put them in pots first, Then I'll plant them. I guess they will
grow in the house, won't they??? I'm so happy. Thanks.
I'm glad that you like them Charleen. Of the ones that you have looked up, are most of them hardy for you?
Yes, most elephant ears can be grown in the house. I have some of my little ones in the house right now.Put them close to a bright window if you can, or even under lights.
Dee
I bet Elizabeth is finishing digging her brugs today, and straightening around her basement greenhouse.I can't wait for her to post pics of it.
Dee
I'll put them right here in front of my computor desk. I wrote on bag, which were hardy.
What color is the Walking Iris, it is also called an Apostal plant, saying it won't bloom
til it has twelve leaves? Isn't that neat? Plants teach you all kinds of things.
Charleen
