Ain't that the truth, Charleen.! It is so much fun giving and receiving garden goodies, and it's double fun to add little suprises! I have a busy day planned today, but the # 1 thing, is to get you two's boxes, stuffed and shipped..
I will be popping in and out of here all day, tho...one of my biggest pleasures, when I'm home puttering..lol. After I get your tropicals sorted out, I'm packing the rest away for the winter. I have had them dug and cut back for a while..., but they are laying on newspapers on shelves in one of the spare bedrooms...drying out, for their winter sleep..lol after I get them bagged up, they will be going to the basement.

I'm still debating wheather I should dig up my dahlias, they sure are blooming pretty right now.
I usually don't. I got them at Lowes. No names just Dahlias. Got to get Preen for the new
flower beds, so won't have so many weeds.

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Are dahliahs hardy for you?I think they are very pretty, but I have plenty of things to dig and store already..lol My granpa had a huge dahliah garden when I was little. I can remember, on a good day, he would stop me and bring a huge bouquet out from behind his back, for me to take to my teacher. But on a bad day(or when he had been nippin' the wild irish rose a little heavy..lol...), he would throw rocks at you, if you were to close to his dahliah bed. All in all I have some great memories, of my 1/2 cherokee grandpaw.I thought no body could do a hilbilly hoe down, like "Pappy"...Yep just the mentions of dahlias takes me back in time. I love them, but I have plenty to dig and store already!
I love preen...a necessary luxeury(misp, I'm sure).
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm having a hard time trying to come up with a suprise for Elizabeth, but I have something in mind..she has been so generous with both of us. I know she's busy and is running out of space, but I figure if she doesn't have room at her place she can put them at her daughters and still enjoy them..lol...You reading this Elizabeth?..lol
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Charleen, will you send me your address again, in an e-mail?
Dee

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I love your Pappy story. I can see him throwing that rck!! My little Grandma Holsted used to raise Those little Belles of Ireland. I can't get them to grow. I may try them in pots next year.
Grandpa raised watermelon and had beehives. We loved it when he harvested honey. We went with him. He taught us not to be afraid of honeybees, I love them.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Sure I will.

Ladies
I am on here, Dee you're too too funny, are you ready for friday, night I don't know about where you are, but here it's suppose to be low 31, so now I don't have a choice but dig the other 15 Brugs up with all their buds on them
tonight I will put the ones that are allready potted up in the basement
Charlene
don't work too hard, just wait till I take Pic's of my basement Greenhouse, I have to get my washer fixed, it's a Whirlpool duet front loader, I think the pump went out on it, I hate too see that repair bill, if it cost more to fix it than replace, I will just get a new one, with an extended warranty
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Elizabeth, same here, weather-wise.I'm as ready as I ever am for the cold..lol.. at least we'll get a little break from yard work huh?Well, after we get all those leaves up anyway.
Ladies, your boxes are on their way.Elizabeth, you may want to turn yours upside down, and open from the bottom. I Didn't realize that I built your box up-side down, until after I had everything fitted in..lol. So if you open it shipping label up,,, those big cannas will be on top. I thought I was putting them on the bottom. The red leaf canna is the only thing not labeled..they are just laying in there snuggly.
Charleen, most of the elephant ears that I sent you are small, cut back pups. When I started with EE most were tinyer than these...they grow quickly. I'm not sure if they are all hardy for you, but I know some are. They are all labled so you can look them up...Darn, forgot the hollyhock seeds...
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
by next week, I will have all the Brugs cut back labeled, & ready to send out, did you want a Dola clipping? I am sending Charlene one, I am going to enjoy today, because of all I have to do tommorrow, before I dig the Brugs, I am goint to take Pic's so you can see those Buds, Dee you are right getting a break from the garden will be nice
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Elizabeth, I have a nice cutting of Dola, so I don't need that one, right now.But if mine doesn't take, I may hit you up next year, k?
Charleen....honey and watermelon...doesn't get much better than that, does it?
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Charlene
I love fresh honey, we try to find star thistle thats grown locally, I was amazed how many honey bees that were all over my red honeysuckle, this year, last year there weren't many
Dee
I will keep one, for you just in case, I will have it rooted, I have to trim that one back anyway
Elizabeth

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

No.Dee, it doesn't. I loved my grandma and Grandpa Holsted they were good to us kids. They made you feel loved. Not so with the other Grandparents but They really weren't that bad. Just seemed so when we were kids. When we went to visit them in summer , my brother made a bow and arrows from Sumac trees! My Grandma Tucker raised parakeets and rabbits. My brother got in trouble poking sticks into the rabbit cages. Got his butt whipped.
Elizabeth, sounds like you have been busy. I know Dee has. I forgot to put Elizabeth's purple Cleome seed in too. Oh, well maybe I'll remember, but I do want to get them to you.
I will be looking forward to getting my boxes. How exciting.
Charleen

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

You know, when you are a kid, things get stuck in your
head. Like the spell of Lilacs in the spring. Or Roses.
Pine sol when Mama mopped. All kinds of things.

Charlene
after this week, I can slow down, you know I was going through my Brugs yesterday, & I found Orange Pafait & Peach Taffy, they are newly registered, I will have to wait till next spring/summer to see them Bloom, last year we didn't have frost until after halloween, looks like it's goint to be early this year, I hope that means we will have an early spring, I have to find 15 flower pots, I allready got 3 big bags of potting soil, I mix moisture max with miracle grow, moisture max is $2.00 cheaper than MG, I just hope it's enough
Elizabeth

Charlene
I remember so well, when I was a kid, I grew up on 250 acres, we grew our own food, my dad gave me 2 little runt pigs
I raised them on a baby bottle, when they grew to 250lbs, they would follow me around like I was their momma, anyway
after school I would always come home expecting to see them, well one day, my dad traded 1 of them off, then butchered the other one, I cried for a whole week, I wouldn't eat a piece of bacon for the longest time, or pork at all
I think that year I lived on vegetables, of course later on I realized that's only farm life, that's probably the best life possible a child can have all that room to run
Elizabeth

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Elizabeth, I bet it's not.I want to pot up some seed but afraid that
pup will tear it up/ Might have to fix me a different spot. He can climb.
He DOES climb. He is too smart for his own good. The Punk!
Charleen

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

My Dad love to raise pigs. Down here you don't see many pigs.
But Daddy had a runt and that pig got to over 300 lbs. Folks
don't raise pigs like they used too. I'll have to find that pic of Daddy
and Henry. i couldn't eat pork either without thinking of poor old
Henry.

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Well, girls I grew up in town, but we did have chickens..lol..I had one named patty and one named one eye..lol.and then there were the three roosters, that used to chase me all over the coal yard...I was scared to death of them
hehe I raised two pigs, when the girls were little one year.I told them from the beginning that they were for the freezer, tho. They like to never forgave me, when they came home and they were gone. It's amazing how smart pigs are, isn't it.When ever we went to the garden the pigs would just squeel like crazey, cause they were used to the kids feeding them the extra tomatoes and they always got a kick out of when we took the hose back to fill up the water trough, the pigs would throw their heads back and let the kids squirt the hose right in their mouths....those were the days...When the kids were little we always had critters of one kind or another
Dee

Charlene
I still like Vegtables, maybe that's why, if I want a snack at night I make a baked potato, I would love to see that Pic I bet it's neat, where I came from if you didn't want bad snakes, you raised hogs, they love to eat them, but there was the black snakes that everyone kept around, it eat the mice out of your barn, there are sooo many times I wish my DH would live on my property, in ky, we have natural gas & coal, so we could heat a house & a greenhouse for free
but my MIL has a short term memory loss, so DH has to take care of her, that's why we live here
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

You know the smell that I remember most from growing up....The smell of the river..lol...My dad used to fish a lot.....we were raised on catfish....lots of catfish, but I still love it..lol...But every once in a while, I catch that smell in the air, now, and I tell my husband," I smell the river"..we are no where near a river here, but there is a good creek down the road..lol
Dee

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh, Elizabeth, I just took the dogs outside to run around for a few minutes. I think an Armadillo has dug a holeunder my Lawnmower and you know I took pictures.
My Chichuahua could walk in that hole without even scrunching down.

Dee
that's a cute story, my girls were raised around animals also, I caught a baby racoon, tamed him with red cherry lifesavers, called him rocky, till he got too big, he would go to the crawl space throw off the register, come in the house to find me, I would pet him he purred like a kitten, they also had baby rabbits & baby ducks, those were the days they went by so fast, now my GS will be 18 yrs old feb. 10th
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Elizabeth, I hope you get to move back to your property in Ky, someday..It is beautiful there!
Charleen if you find that pic of your dad and Henry, can you scan it in and show it to us?
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Charlene
Wow, do you have them around all the time, they sure can dig by the likes of the hole, I thought I had it bad with the squirrels, do they damage your flower beds?
Elizabeth

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Crawfish, muddy smell like that. Sometimes all the meat we had was what they hunted, fished or raised theirselves. I sort of miss it.
I know I miss all those good old folks and relatives , I guess the older we get the more we remember.

Hubby and I raised two baby coons on bottles, when we lived in the country. Their momma got hit on the road. They were so cute, and when we tried to release them in the backwoods, the beat us back to the yard.lol We finally did get them to live in the wild, but they still came in to eat the cat food.My daughter that lives there now, swears that they still come in to eat, but I'd say it is their babies, because they did bring their babies in.
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Armadillos? Do you see them a lot , Charleen...yeah, the squirrels don't seem so bad, now..lol
Yes, Charleen, that's the smell..love it..

my middle name is Ann, I have star dancer, but it's a cross with America I think, I will have to look at my tags, I don't think we will ever leave Ohio, I like our discussions, being able to talk about anything, we will have to start a new thread just for whatever, I am glad we met here, makes my day, just think if we lived close to each other we would have to have a huge greenhouse to have all our plants in, I have a bunch of houseplants as well as Brugs
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Girl, I love our gabbing..no doubt about it! And we do have some great conversations, about everything and you are so right, if we lived closer, we would be the three muskateers of the plant world, or would we be moe, larry and curly?...lol One things for sure, we would never be bored, would we...
How cool is that...that you and my beth have the same first and middle name?
