Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Victor is usually stampeding.

(Zone 1)

Great photo Victor, how handsome you are!

Thanks for the laugh this early in the morning!

Uh, #2 perhaps Kin? ^_^ LOL!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

GGK, there's a Halloween thread in photos for that one!

You macro people, VA Wild Rose and WaterCan2, you have now created a macro monster! I was looking through my pictures and I found one that just seemed to shout macro, so looked up that definition you gave WaterCan. Then I thought 'maybe I should just try taking some macros just for the sake of macros.' I'm going out of my mind. I love this concept! I took 150 macro shots this morning. They were all pretty terrible but oh so close! Just what I needed, another obsession!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Kin,
Just from an artistic viewpoint, you shoulda placed yourself and the umbrella between the two giant elephant ears.
You'll find I am very visual.

(Zone 1)

Now, that picture must go in the Weird, Funny, Misc. category! Not that you are weird, but just that it's a fun picture! And, I love Sharran's suggestion of placing yourself between the two giant "ears"!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

And me, too, Elphaba about the macros. Found myself laying flat beneath a caladium, shooting upward.
Duh. In the rain.

Yeah, Lin! Giant ears for Kin.

(Zone 1)

I just learned about the macro button on my camera this year, and it sure is fun! Most of my pictures are close ups of blooms or foliage.

Sharran: I find myself doing the same thing, lying underneath a plant to get a shot ... only problem for me is I usually have to call my husband to help me up! ^_^ Last year someone on one of the forums was posting night time photo's and now that has me going out to the deck or backyard in the dark, with flashlight in hand to take pictures ... a different perspective and sometimes very interesting! I have a couple of night blooming Orchid Cactus, one I've had for more than 30 years and had never seen a bloom, now every time I notice a bud, I wait in anticipation to get night shots of those flowers!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, yes, there is that getting up part.
Hadn't thought about going out in the dark.
Hmmmmmm.

(Zone 1)

Sharran, you have to try night time photography! Don't turn any lights on, point the flashlight at the plant and take the picture.

This is my night blooming orchid cactus, Epiphyllum oxypetalum when it bloomed a couple of months ago.

OMG! That's a beautiful pic! My mini epi has blooms like that but they stay open for part of the day too. I've been trying and trying to get pictures of them. The white just glows too much. I'm going to have to try this night thing. Do you use the flash or just the flashlight?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice. I've been doing the flashlight / night shot thing for years. You need the light to help the focus.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

And so you don't trip over the hose.

(Zone 1)

hmm ... I'm pretty sure I didn't turn the flash off, but the way my memory is who knows?! My thinking is that there wouldn't be enough light from just the flashlight, but I don't really have a clue. I don't know anything about photography, all I do is point and shoot. ^_^ I will play tonight and take pictures outside in the dark, both with and without the camera flash activated to see what I get.

This isn't the greatest picture but you can see how vivid the colors look on this croton at night.

No - the flashlight is not to light the subject - you still need the flash. It's to help the autofocus lock onto the subject.

(Zone 1)

I'm surprised I haven't fallen into the swimming pool!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's a night shot of my Autumn Moon J maple.

(Zone 1)

LOL, and I shine the flashlight on what I'm taking the picture of but I figured it wouldn't be enough light without the flash too. Tonight I will take a couple of pictures in the dark just using the camera flash, and then a few shining the flashlight on the plant as well ... just to see if there's a lot of difference.

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness ... that is absolutely stunning! Who needs blooms with foliage like that? I love Japanese Maples but haven't heard of one that will grow here. Oh, I just love those colors!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks - it's one of my favorite JM's. I have about 30 - mostly small.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

That JP pic is stunning. I have two and they both look just awful right now. I mostly get late afternoon sun which they don't like. They just get burned up.

I'll share with y'all the shot that I wish I had gotten this morning. It was an opportunity that won't come again, but it's like your caladium efforts. The flash eliminated the effect of the backlighting but without it there wasn't enough light. I should have tried the flashlight on the front.

Oh E,
I love it, love it, love it!!

Yours too, Victor, but think I have only told you that a gazillion times, only with every photo you show.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, ladies. Great shot, Elph. Love the shadows.

(Zone 1)

Very cool!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks. Y'all are too kind. I can tell that you're real artists b/c you can see how almost good it is!

In the category of plants I've loved, tortured and abandoned, I'd have to add one that I thought was dead. I yanked it up by the roots and tossed it on the compost pile. It wasn't dead. Found it this morning full of new shoots. The guilt!

The pets category is a fav again. Maybe next year we should split up dogs and cats. What am I thinking, stop, stop!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I think we should have about 24 calendars.
One for Pets
One, Plants I've loved and killed (tortured, abandoned)
Roses
Daylilies
Macros
Minis
Moons
Suns
Bugs
Butterflies
Stuff
etc.

And everybody could enter no more than 12 each.
Howzzat??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sharon you forgot the Dahlia calendar :O

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Oh yeah...dang, I did forget.
Sigh.

Here ya go, front page.....dedicated to you.

I seem to have a plethora of hoses cuz alot of my pics this year have a hose or two in them. Maybe there should be a Hose catagory. I'm just throwing that out there for consideration for next year's contest because I could be a serious contender (snort)

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh Dahlia...I hear ya!

Seems like every half decent photo I look at has a darned hose in it!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ok I believe this might be calendar worthy in the Hose Catagory. How fabby of me to focus so clearly on the hose (snort).

LOL! Yes, to hoses and then what about the Big Toe category. I keep sticking my foot in the pic - talk about ugly gardeners!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so laughing at myself. After suggesting that Dave post a time that the contest closes, I still missed it! I thought it was tonight at midnight. I just spent an hour going through tree photos! That's OK. I'll have more trees to choose from next year!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7a)

Crap! Really? I never could figure out the time either and thought it was going to be near the end of the day on the 2nd. Well, I guess that frees up my day to clean up my tempered glass table that shattered into a million pieces yesterday. (That's the one I was working with my photos on. :-() I shouldn't have waited until after Halloween was over.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry about your table! My big witch blew over in a storm that we had right before Halloween and she broke her face and three of her fingers. I was busy trying to glue her back together again and get the rest of the decorations that blew down back up. I hate it when stuff breaks.

I started voting and I've already decided that I need more containers and more cacti and succulents! This contest is dangerous!
