New Garden Projects This Year #5

South Hamilton, MA

You can start back north if the heat is too much!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bill - I suggest a stone potting shed as your next project.

South Hamilton, MA

How about an ice house?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Or an outhouse.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

have already begun a pile of stone for the next project - long way to go though

my next project will be to clear out a 20 foot wide section in front of the wet lands in back - it has really begun to fill in and do the slow creep into the yard - this means swinging a pick and burning brush and small sapling trees i dig out - hope to hit/find some stone too - it will also be good exercise!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

After the wetland project, I vote for a stone root cellar in the ground with a funky door in the garden. It could also be used for a secret hideout ^_^ Like this one but with a way funkier door. http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.virtualhorses.com/HorseProperties/equestrianhomesforsaleMinneapolis.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.virtualhorses.com/HorseProperties/horsepropertyStCloudMN.htm&usg=__ZM5cSC_gdjQ9BAmSvl9miw1Rrj4=&h=323&w=432&sz=51&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=JXAy2ZP8Z07iGM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=126&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dinground%2Broot%2Bcellar%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

like a hobbit home

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Exactamondo but better cuz it could be used for storage and a secret hideout.

Thomaston, CT

I would love a root cellar---but so would Bill's snakes!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Bye, Louise! Safe traveling!

I would love a little hobbit home myself. Cute idea!

dnut i do have the perfect spot for that hobbit home - it is off my property though - i will try and get a picture - it looks like the farm next to me dug to make a small pond and left a dirt/clay hill just outside my property line - i have borrowed some dirt from there in the past and now use it for yard waste - would be a perfect little hobbit home

hummmm
Holloween influence I guess

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Taking a break from the chores to say, I got most of my bulbs planted in my new bed. I saved half of all the dafs for another bed. But I still need to go in to that bed and cut everything down so I can have the room to plant in there. My drill is charged and ready to go with my new bulb auger. It's supposed to rain for a couple days and then warm up to 60's, so it looks like I may get to plant in some decent conditions in a few days. My new garden is not much to look at now but it should look fantastic around late April and early May. : )

This collage shows how I laid everything out in the bed.. I shoveled out a trailer + wheel barrel full of dirt and put down all the bulbs - checked them twice and threw dirt back over them. Man I know they say planting bulbs is easy but I find it much easier to plop a potted plant in the ground!

Can't wait to see it in the spring!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

(Felt compelled to use exclamation marks. ^_^)

Seriously - great stuff, Meredith.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

VERY nice!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nice bed - is that a redbud tree?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Meridith, that should look great this spring, and even more spectacular in a couple of years. Can't wait to see pics of that.

Thanks everyone! Yes Wha, that is a Redbud ... you know your trees. : )

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Me too can't wait to see it in the spring Meredith!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

not real hard to spot a rb:) i have about 10 different kinds of rb's - really like the leaves and the spring color. yours will look good there - that will be an expanding bed as they grow pretty quick

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks Dnut! : )
Wha, The RB is part of the reason I am just doing spring bulbs for now. I figure it will eventually be a shade bed except in spring before it leafs out. I beleive you, that they grow fast. The first year I planted it - it seemed to just sit there, but the second year I noticed it had gone from shorter than I to taller! : )

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I don't know why I don't have a redbud. I've loved them for over 20 years. I used to go to the Blue Ridge Mtns in April to see them. Nostalgia for NC where I gave birth to my girl.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would've had a redbud if my stupid dog didn't decide to play soccer with the pot it was in. Dumb mutt!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

boojum i think you would be on the edge of the zone for rb's - i would try an eastern rb - the arbor society usually offer little's for $15.00 with the 10 trees they send out - that was how i got my first few - just a stick that my wifed laughed at me about - now one of her favorite trees

wha O you have a gorund in your garen! I did not know that.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i need a dnut dictionary :) What is a gorund?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think it is something that grows at the 'back' of your garden according to your post. Probably rockish.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

don't need a D-nut dictionary ... you need a Wha dictionary

just making sure everyone is on their toes :)

I have some redbuds, too, and they've been producing a lot of seedlings lately. I plan to do another RU this July, and if anyone wants a RB seedling I will certainly pot one up for you. Like Bill said, they grow quick. They provide pretty heavy shade, too, so keep that in mind for when it's mature. One of mine has to be at least 20' high and wide. I don't know how many years it took to reach that height. I I just looked through my old pictures of it from 2003, the year after I first moved here, and I don't think it's gained any height since then. It looks about the same, so I guess it won't get any bigger. It sure makes a dense canopy of shade.

Well, I've been working on redoing an old bed that I first did in 2003. Finally I am just about finished. It's one of my daylily beds. I've been moving the daylilies according to size, dividing and transplanting and improving the soil with compost. I didn't take a before picture right before I started. I got a good part of this bed done last week, the part you see on the right of the picture. Took me 2 days to complete that section. Then today I nearly completed the left side. The first picture is from today, before beginning work in the left side. Boy, am I sore!

Then this is how it looked tonight before I watered it in. I still have 2 DL's to plant here, then this part will be done. I can't wait to see how this looks next year.

This is how it looked when I completed it in the fall of 2003.

You are ambitious this year with all you projects Cousin Nut! Now I'm going to ask a question frought with doom: are you supposed to cut all the foliage down when you move DLs in the fall? I noticed yours are all trimmed down. Second question: if you are and you didn't and it's now frosty every night what should you do besides pray? crappola
