Edibles - '09 - Part 5

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx - my own fault - that water is really hot!

ahhh Bill I need hot water - NOT-

5th year gardening. Worst year. Blight, Slugs, Aphids, Hornworms. Lost 81 tomatoe plants from blight, and threw the towel in. Would not even pick a darn weed. That was back in June. Nothing was right from flowers to veggies. I basically would not even come to DG since June. Will I try agian?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

YOU BETTER!!
No tomatoes here , neighbor got blight, then I did too. I have squash though, they NEVER fail me!! lol

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nah, it will turn as the weather gets cooler. Very Nice!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

cool!!

My Mom was always trying to give me her pressure cooker---nope, not for me! Left-handers are too accident prone, & I have the bumps & bruises to prove it---don't need the burns, too! Sherrie---next year will be a fine gardening year for you--that's what I'm telling myself daily!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm a lefty too, we are the only ones in our right minds ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

here is the eggplant lasagna - it smelled fantastic and tasted even better!

yum!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks wha now I'm hungry. hmm somehow I don't think my planned pb and j is gonna cut it.

Thomaston, CT

Looks great----I have hopes for my 1 eggplant. I agree, Pixie---lefties are special.

I wonder how many southpaws there really are in the world? Alot of people were forced to be northpaws in school. It always make me snort when they say 90% (or something close) of people are right-handed. I am a northpaw and I'm supposed to be left-brained and very rational ROFLOL

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

That looks delicious, Bill!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it was - all gone now - moussaka on sunday - it only gets better!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do make any other Greek food, Bill?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good question - love lamb - although it is not a greek recipe and that started before the X - greeks have great deserts - golakdabodika (sp?) is one of them - the recipe calls for a pound of sugar - it is a custard pie with filo that is dripping with sugar. have not done that as i would be the size of the Goodyear blimp. it is delicious! better than baklava by a mile or a couple waist inches:)

another i love is a cookie with nuts that drips with sugar/honey - i have the recipe somewhere and always ask my kids to give it to me again. another i can not do because of the consequences.

Thomaston, CT

They sound good---sweet, though!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

and here is the moussaka - came out good - could have used a little more nutmeg and t-sauce.

we did have a mishap with a canned jar of tomato's that did not seal. i did not originally know they were bad (only canned them last week). poured half the jar into 2 pounds of ground lamb when i realized they were bad. After 10 minutes decided to dump it. We were making two pans one with the lamb and a small hamburger version for mrs. wha. so we just made one big hamburger version.

Looks great, Bill! You were smart not to push it with the possibly tainted tomatoes. Does Cindy not eat lambs because they are cute? I can relate! LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

maybe - she does not eat fish or lamb because of smell and taste. which is a pain since i love both.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm with Cindy! Don't like either one.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

boy you are high maintenance - diet, back, bee stings - it is time to change your dg handle to glassgardener :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You left out the knee!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

right - forgot about that and you have to wear a hat!

btw i'm getting a rooster cartilage injection next wed. - i feel like i've gained 10 lbs because i can't get out and run - and some of those ru pictures convinced me :)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

hee hee, poor Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only hats in the cold. Rooster cartilage? So you'll be cockier?? My Synvisc injection seems to have helped - the knee has been pretty good lately.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes - rooster cartilage - i just smile when i repeat that to my wife :)

doctor was kinda funny, said not to ask me or any other doctor how it works, they are not sure, just that it does. evidently it regenerates cartilage growth.

so (true story) i asked him if i could at least pick out the rooster. wouldn't want so wimping rooster's cartilage!

I always liked this one:

just a follow up and reminder for those using pressure cookers to can - let them cool down before opening, those warnings are real!
my little accident blistered and peeled - right now it is a deep red close to the color of autumn joy in full bloom - oh yeah it hurts all the time too - 24/7 salved with neosporin makes a mess on your shirts too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You can run them under the cold water until you heat the pressure release.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i know what i was "supposed" to do, just wanted to push it a little and get the jars out. had the chile rellenos to make. only had another 5 minutes or so to wait. stupid does not begin to describe it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope, but impatient does. I suffer from the same ailment. ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i'll remember that when i roll over in bed tonight - that hurts!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I thought you could use the diswasher to do that safely now.

Thomaston, CT

The only things edible in my garden right now are beets, carrots, & a few dwarf peppers----sad! Hope the knee injection works, Bill---it didn't for my DH, but I feel he was too old for it to take---now he goes with cortisone every 3 months, but he still has terrible trouble walking.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

robin did he get the rooster injection?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I was surprised to get a basket of produce out of my garden today - only one tomato beginning to turn, so I snatched it off its vine just on general principle! It is now thinking about turning in the kitchen window. I had green beans (still coming from the original planting) and from my Jade patch, and lots of peppers, some of which are now turning red at last. I also got a couple of puny cukes and about 8 more onions. I'm close to the end of the onions now.

Bill - how is your burn doing? Keep an eye on that. I think it's vitamin E that keeps it from developing keloid scar tissue. If that's the right vitamin, you just puncture one of the capsules and smear it on the burn. My BIL was in a plane crash and was burned very badly, so he was helped greatly by that.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it has stopped hurting as of a couple of days ago - peeled once and looks ready to peal again - although not in sheets like before - to much detail :)

mrs. wha has a close watch on it - though she will not scratch it!! it itches now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You should always keep Silvidene on hand for burns. You apply iy once you're done running cool water over the burn. Works great.
