Plant combos

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

I thought it would be nice to start sharing ideas and experiences about plants that go together well, either because they look good together or because they bring each other some kind of benefit, as in companion planting. I gotta dash now but will put something on the next couple of days. If anyones got anything in the meantime? I'd love to hear.

Pamela Harper is the person most responsible for color harmony in the garden, with her book "Color Echoes". If you do a search, here on DG, for color echoes or color harmony you should see some interesting threads.

This is one of those unplanned accidents that worked out for the best. Daylilies and the dreaded weed, in my garden, Houttuynia. It's beautiful but far too invasive.

Thanks, dathen.

This Japanese iris goes well with the self-seeded annuals at the bottom left.

One of my favorite combos is in my little wagon planter on my deck.

Many thanks indeed for all those ideas Pirl. I like the concept of echoes.... one plant picking up the colour of the other.
Purple foliage always works well for me . Seems to compliment everything. Here in Cotinus 'Royal Purple' with Aster x frikartii 'Monch'. This one current here in S E England. Perhaps we could keep this thread going and keeping it topical. Share them all whether happy accidents, careful selections or just things in nature as they happen. Just a thought. I'm gonna try.

Mr. C - I'm a big fan of purple as well. How about a photo to show us your combination?

Ha!

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

I have posted pics on here before but this time its not happening. Really irritating when computers don't do what you want them too. Never mind I'll sort it.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good luck. We'll be patiently waiting.

Mr. C: Don't feel bad about the picture posting thing...it took me over a year to figure out how to do it !

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

Its really irritating. Tried to post that pic so many times and its not worked. Have posted pics before but this is the first time under my new user name ( changed it from Jonnieboy cos it made me feel silly).
I go to brouse, it brings up the pics on my computer, I select the one I want and it says something about dcuments and settings in the box next to brouse ( it always did that before so I'm guessing thats good). Then I go to preview and I get the statement about it being a thumbnail image but there is no image. Anybody got any idea what I'm doing wrong. I've tried all the same on my laptop too but the same thing happens ( or doesn't happen) . I've reported it a couple of times to DG 'Contact Us' but got no reply as yet.
I'm going out in the garden cos its nicer than sitting here, but hopefully there will come a day when I can share pics on DG again.

Maybe someone on the Camera Forum could help you. Could you try re-sizing the photo and trying to post it again?

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

That's exactly the same problem I had posting photos for so long.

Unfortunately, I don't remember how the issue got resolved. My 16 year old niece came over and fixed the problem for me...don't know what she did, and wouldn't understand it anyway, as I am not the least bit computer literate.

Find a teenager who knows computers !

Thanks for the suggestions. Trouble is I'd already made the pic just a fraction of its original size, and because it happens both on my pc and my apple mac laptop, I can't imagine that its do with my computer. Its either me being daft ( quite likely indeed ) or some thing to do with the website which is only affecting me.
Both my sons are now in their early 20s. They probably could have helped a few years ago but now they seem to have lost their magic powers

You must be so frustrated!

Another happy accident - yellow Asiatic lilies and 'Sing the Blues', Japanese iris.

That's really nice, Pirl.
Flowerjen - I love those colors together.
I think maybe purple/lavender/blue with yellow has to be one of my favorites.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

One of the nicest plants to use with the Color Echoes theory is lantana. I'll try to get a photo today.

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

Yes the lilies and Iris are great, especially because of the bit of yellow in the Iris. One of the important things I suppose is whether the combo is sustainable, ie the the plants can live and grow together. Except with summer bedding plants when they only need to last a season. Looking forward to the Lantana pic if you can Pirl.
Oh by the way! my photo posting problem does appear to be a weird glitsch at DGs end but they've been really helpful and are on the case so hopefully I too will be able to send something soon.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I did take the photo, Mr. C, but it was too bright out so the lantana can't be noticed very much:

Wonderful combinations! This is a theme I worked on this summer with foliage plants. Learning experience mostly. Happy accidents are good though. Here's one of mine.

I can see what you mean though Pirl. The Lantana is like the Solenostemon ( Coleus) in reverse. Looks really good.
Seray 53. What is that plant with the blue/white flowers. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Billingshurst, United Kingdom

Yayyyyy!. I think I'm sending a pic at last. This is the Aster and Cotinus I mentioned all those days ago. No stopping me now but its time to sleep so stop I will.
