Morning Glory Pics #14

Helena - You mentioned about Onalee's Japanese seeds being a little harder to germinate. I have not had any problems with any of the packs I've gotten from her. All germinated fine in about 5 days. And the vines seem to be very healthy. I got seeds from the past vine cultivars, too. But my new Sazanami vine seems to be a low-pollen producer, so it's cross time for that one! :-)

If y'all remember, I managed to get a seed of Fuji no Monet that grew and bloomed true. I planted a couple seeds for my son and his wife in one of their pots. He sent me photos today of his blooms. Apparently as Karen2005 stated perviously, it DOES produce vines that have solid white as well as pink with white ray blooms. Here is a photo of his two vines and the blooms from them. Does anyone know if the seeds from these F1 vines could still produce the purple and white rayed Fuji no Monet? I am also growing two F1 seeds, but the vines are still very young and no blooms yet.

So ... anyone who I share seeds with of my past winter vine, may or may not get a true bloom from their vine. Just giving y'all the heads up! :-)

Love your blooms Helena. The Purple one is so pretty.

Becky, I got the white Fuji no Monet from the sds A shared with me.
I'm going to plant a couple of these sds next yr and hope
I get a purple. Your son's pink rayed bloom looks like my
Fuji no Beni.

A new bloom today, Blue's Royal Majesty, a deep purple
thank you Karen, I love this one.

Becky, it must be me but even when they germiate a few end up dying on me. I'll have to try again in the spring.

Really pretty blooms Becky and Jackie.

Wow love the rainbow of color down the thread pink, white, purple and nice, nice blues!

Well about the Fuji No Monet I`m experimenting to find that very thing out. I already know the purple Fuji No Monet will make more Fuji No Monets,Pinks and whites. F3 gave More Fuji No Monets but still a few pinks and whites. So it might be encouraging to others growing this that it Might over time conform better to type if selected each generation. Time will tell!

The pinks will come back true to pink but different shades are possible also possible lighter pinks, brushing markings with or without, ray white and solids are possible. I`m unsure about the white. I have not planted the seeds from the white I gathered so don`t know about those yet. Maybe that will help some people. Karen

Thanks Karen, good to know. Though ... I got to thinking about what Jackie wrote ...

Jackie - I think you may be right ... the Pink with white rays might not be Fuji no Monet. I say that because the rays on the Monet start wide at the mouth and get narrower to the end of the petals like this Pink Fuji No Monet bloom that was a volunteer in the pot I grew the original in over the winter. So that pink might just be a different Fuji. The leaves are solid color. Does Fuji no Beni have solid or variegated leaves?

I was looking at your posted photos today ... Purple, pink, and blue! My 3 favorite colors for flowers! :-) Very nice all of them!

Helena - Hmmm .. well that's a bummer. I usually only plant 1 or 2 seeds at a time. So I can't say for sure if the entire packet of seeds by the Fukukaen Company in Japan (sold by Onalee's) will all germinate, but I've not had any that didn't. I've gotten seeds from Arleen that were 5 years old by the same company and had quick germination even then. Onalee sells from 2 different Japanese companies. I bought some of her seeds from the Nichinou Company in Japan, too, and also had good germination with them. Sooo ... not sure why you didn't have the same success as me. I would certainly give them a try again! :-)

I love getting seeds in the original Japanese seed packs. So cool ... to be getting these seeds from Japan! They have been some of the most beautiful morning glories I've grown. :-) And the size of the blooms is amazing! The Japanese have perfected the art of JMG creations!

scicciarella - Love the photo of your Purple Flaked I. purpurea! Very nice color contrasts in your bloom and your photo is such a great close-up! Wow! Love your blue ensigns. You are one of the few folks here that seem to be able to grow them and get them to bloom so nicely! I've had no luck at all growing them. I think it is too hot here in my zone for them to grow and thrive and bloom! :-(

Forgot to post the Pink Fuji no Monet (F1 volunteer). Here it is... See what I mean about the shape and direction of the rays?

Yes, I see it. The rays on your sons blooms are reversed. Wide at the petal tips, narrower at the mouth. Although there's not much difference
on my No Beni blooms, the ray just slightly larger at the mouth/
I will check my no Beni lvs in the morning. I would have sworn they're variegated.
Becky, I love the pink Fuji no Monet. I think it's special too.

Becky, oh don't get me wrong I love buying from mg's seeds from Onalees b/c if I make a mistake there's plenty more to try. Yeah and I also shared a few too. Weather here this summer I really think did my seedlings in, too much rain.

Pretty blooms everyone!

Helena - Beauties all of them!! I wonder if the abundance of rain is making your flowers bloom display with the scrunchie look? I am trying to remember how mine looked after an evening rain. I think mine may have looked similiar. I can't really remember ... I love the color on your Lady Laura bloom! Really pretty!

Darren - Love that photo and the color of that bloom! Neat close-up shot!!!

Jackie - I was looking at the photo again of my son's vines and the leaves all look similiar, so maybe the pink one is a Monet. I don't know what to think. They were hand pollinated indoors, so I don't know what else it could be. Maybe that rayed pattern is in the genes of the Monet? Hard to figure on some of these cultivars ...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - Your tri-color cross is just amazing!!! What a cool pattern in pretty shades of blue! :-) :-) :-)

Good news! My F1 grow-out of Diluted Fuji no Muraski (originally from Sarah) is now showing some gorgeous diluted colors and patterns. Whoo Hoo! And the best news is that it is producing pollen for my hand-pollination efforts! I couldn't take my eyes off all the blooms on the vine this morning! What a stunner!!! I am very pleased with this cultivar cross! Thank you again, Sarah!

Here is a bloom from my Alamo Vine (Merremia dissecta). Seed came from Skimper! ;-) This vine was on the brink of death and has made a nice come-back and has been blooming like crazy for me. The plant leaves and blooms are currently very small, but it has made a nice bushy vine and will need to be potted up. I love everything about this vine! Am hoping to get seeds from it, too.

Becky, The diluted Fuji No Murasaki is beautiful! Edited to add: Alamo vine is neat too.

This looks like the pink and white what I got from Fuji No Monet in addition to the purple Fuji No Monet. If you plant in clean store bought seed starter then the results are true.

Your volunteer could be something else as you say. Karen

Beautiful White NOID from Dany! This vine blooms like crazy every day! These blooms were all at the top of the poles, so had to raise my camera over my head to get this shot. This is also a good pollen producer. I am using this vine to cross my Sazanami (since it is NOT producing pollen at all). I am hoping it will produce a lot of lighter bloom color Sazanami vines. Better to try to cross. As I say ... never let a bloom go to waste! :-)

I am also using the pollen on this one to try to cross the Pink Kikyo blooms. It will be interesting to see what is produced in the F1 and F2 of my efforts to cross these vines. :-)

Here is the Pink Kikyo also from Dany that I am trying to cross with the large white blooming vine. You just never know what you might get! ;-)

Mauve Splash from Helena. Another pretty blooming vine. This one hasn't produced as many blooms like the others. I am going to give all mine another shot of Bloom Booster today to hopefully keep them blooming. :-)

This Ishidatami (F1) is the most prolific bloomer of them all. The vine is just loaded with blooms every day. All those split blooms look so cool! And it is producing pollen, so I hope to get lots of seeds to share.

A honey bee landed on this bloom this morning and was walking all over it. Maybe the bee had never seen a split morning glory bloom before? LOL!

Here are some varying blooms lined up on the Blue/Purple Striped Henka vine! Very pretty!

I know this one is not a morning glory, but I am just fascinated by the crazy looking blooms! The ants seem to be quite appreciative of these blooms, too. The smell is wonderful. I am thinking of growing this one up and over my arbor along with some other vine. I love blooms that are scented near my backdoor. :-)

Does anyone know how to pollinated these blooms. I want more seeds!! Elsa, if you are reading, I would love to hear more about this vine! :-)

Here is one more view of the day of the Diluted Fuji mo Muraski!

Jackie - I have discovered that the first 10-15 blooms on this vine are more typical looking and then the mutant blooms kick in, then ... LOOK OUT!!! :-D How is your vine doing?

And here is Ishidatami loaded with blooms! My current set-up is not too attractive, but it is functional. LOL!

Karen - Your comment, "This looks like the pink and white what I got from Fuji No Monet in addition to the purple Fuji No Monet. If you plant in clean store bought seed starter then the results are true."

How interesting a theory!!!

It just so happens that last year I used a sterile seed starter mix for my first attempt at growing MGs indoors. I used up all that soil and have gone back to using MiracleGro Moisture Control potting mix. Now you have me really curious ... I am definitely buying some more of that seed starter sterile soil mix again and am going to grow more of the Fuji no Monet seeds in it to see what happens! I never even thought that the soil itself might help that particular vine grow true!

How did you discover that possibility?

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

It has nothing to do with the genes but with clean mix you know for sure it is only seeds you hand picked from the parent vine so you see what that vine produces. There will not be any volunteers from other varieties to confuse the results if you are wanting to know what a certain vine will produce.

I think you are thinking of "true" as the in the vine only produces seeds that grow out plants that look just like it. Clean dirt doesn`t guarantee true seeds.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Karen - Oops! ... I misunderstood.

So few people have gotten the pretty purple true Fuji no Monet blooms from their seeds, that I thought maybe the fertilizer or something else in Moisture Control potting mix was turned the blooms a different color or making them solid white. My bad! LOL!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Ok, this is another picture of the Monet cross and there is the pink one again. :)

Karen - Your pink looks very similiar to my son's pink bloom, so maybe it is a seed from my winter FNM! Makes me wonder what was crossed with what vine to get the purple blooming FNM? Very pretty all of them whether they are purple or pink! :-)

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

The mystery will continue to unfold! :)

Becky,

You did it again :-)
Sarah

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Sarah - :-) How fortunate, huh? Do you need more seeds or do you still have some. It's proving to be rather consistent. :-)

I glanced out the french door window pane and saw that the blooms are turning purple now. Not sure which color is prettier! I'm just glad this vine provides BOTH colors throughout the day! :-)

A true winner!
