CLOSED: Seed Junkie Chit Chat - Newbies Welcome 9/01/09

I found the colored ones but haven't seen the white ones. How did you find out there was such a thing?

Saw it on e-bay one day but it was up for bids and someone got it. That was when I was looking for these. There are only 4 colors of them. White is the most rare. Did you notice the difference in the leaf/ vine part?(kaka beak and lotus parrot's beak)

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Can somebody help me? I have a bunch of blackeyed susan heads and have taken the seed off but they are so tiny that I don't know how to separate the seed from the chafe. Any body got any ideas?

I'll look closer Mekos.

Flower I have the same problem with some of mine. I'll research it some. LOL

Kaka beak- the one you ordered. Look at the leaf of this one and the tiny leaf of the other one.

Thanks seray. I have tried everything I know to get it done but just can't seem to accomplish it.

I'm new at collecting seeds too, Flower. I always just let them fall and reseed the ground and this year I'm collecting stuff, but on the ones I don't know about, I leave it all there so I don't lose the seeds. Like white manarda-bee balm, clip the whole head off when it dries. I figure you can plant the whole thing or sprinkle it out when you plant it, but at least you get the seeds.

I see it! Now we have to find a botanist to tell us if it really exists. Haven't seen it on the web yet.

I asked a botanical nursery in Texas that has rare plants. I'll see if I can find a few more to ask. Someone will know.

Here's a little article on it: http://books.google.com/books?id=Tan6yHF4fG0C&pg=PA230&lpg=PA230&dq=Lotus+berthelotii+white+variety&source=bl&ots=L9CtCZyoGs&sig=LPH6VEHzJgn5QyU895JjT94C_E0&hl=en&ei=vfahSoLuHsWwtgeKhZn1Dw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false

As most of you know, I won 5 red spider lily bulbs in the auction a while back. Well, as most of you also know, they are not cold hardy here, so I really have no place for them! Does anybody want or need these? I really wanted those yellow MG seeds and the climbing bleeding heart. So, if anybody can use these lilies, please dm me! I'd be happy to send them to a good home. If there is something you have that will grow here, super! But, if not, that's OK too.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I'll take them sk.

I said that and I am not sure they will grow in my zone after I thought about it. LOL

Good morning, FF! If you want these, you can sure have them! They need to go to a good home, and I just know mine isn't it! LOL! Let me know for sure, as not sure after reading your edit! LOL!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Plant Files says 7a to 9b. They would certainly grow here, in part shade, or in cue's neck of the woods.

Edited to add the link - geez . . . Not enough coffee yet I guess - lol.

Which lily, Flower? The Marnada is a flower- bee balm, the parrot's beak is a vine and the orange/yellow flower is a gloriosa lily. It climbs my lattice fence. It doesn't run or go fast, but the tips of the leaves curl around the fence to hold on and climbs right up there. Just started blooming for me and I'm loving it. It has tubers, but I'm going to try to root some this time and see if it works. I also have Stictocardia vine up there on the fence but it hasn't bloomed just yet. This is it. Someone sent me 6-6inch pieces to root and one rooted. Now it's climbing all over the place. It's also one of my favorites. I'm going to try to root a few more of these as well.

sk ,send them to one of the girls south of me. I have 2 crinums that I have to store for the winter and that is a job because they are the Giant Queens. I have to get them out of the pots soon and up for the winter and I am seriously thinking about giving them away. Not sure yet what I want to do with them.

The bee balm. The Monarda

Here is my 3 pots of Lotus parrots beak. Gold flash, amazon sunset, and scarlet red.

OK, FF, will do! All you southern belles, which one of you would like to give these beauties a new home?

Oh , I'll send you some dead heads. I just know they have round heads and the tiny seeds are in the tiny little thingys that make the round part and never figured out how to tear them open(they are so small) to get seeds that I can't see anyway. So to ensure I don't lose the seeds, I clip whole heads and send it. That way you get all the seeds. I'll send you some, but when you decide on the lilies if you want to get rid of some, please remember me. I love those.( I'll share with you anything I have, that you want)

Hey Flower, If you don't want to store the crinum lilies- send them to me, I will keep them through winter and in the spring, I'll send you pieces back of each one. Then we'll both have some.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

sk - if cue doesn't want them I could probably plant them with my rain lillies which I'm getting ready to dig up and move. They are in a bad place - my teen keeps weed whacking the foliage - lol. Not sure if I have anything you'd want as I am just starting out with flowers, but I have tons and tons of different veggie seeds or I'd be happy to pay the postage for them.

It's actually raining here right now!! I'm stoked . . . I was digging compost into the veggie beds but had to stop for the rain. Don't get to say that too often in Phoenix - lol.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey got something else to offer if any one wants any. I just dug up my asiatics and have got loads of the bubils and probably a few of the Mother bulbs to give away if you all want any. I probably have about 6 packs of the little ones to give and maybe 4 or 5 of the mothers. I am digging to move them so I may have more later and probably some of the orientals too. Not sure about them as this is the first year for them.

Flower, I would love some of the bulbs also, D-mail me with somethings you would like and I'll share with you.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Flower, I would love some! I don't have any of the asiatics, and only have the orange daylilies, so any kinds, colors, etc. would be more than what I have now! LOL! Let me know what I can send you for them!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

WOW loca! Rain again for you! You must be blessed, and a teenager that does yard work! You are really blessed! I'll get them in the mail to you on Tuesday, since I can't get them sent out today. I assume that you are in the address exchange.

Thanks, Flower! Whatever you send will be great! Yippee! Something new and different! With all the help from all you great DG peeps, I'll have a variety of things yet! Gotta love this place!

Skellogg, what kind of plants are hardy for you in your zone 3? I have lots of plants and seeds but I don't have a clue except for my zone (and higher-if they are hardy for me, they will be above my zone). Not sure on anything colder than mine.

OH my goodness! I thought I had over watered and killed my jade vine, so I stopped watering and let it dry out and woops there it is. Back beautiful more than before. I can't believe it perked up so nicely. For the last couple weeks I just didn't go look because I tend to spray mist and water and pamper them to death sometimes, so I made myself forget about it. Now got new leaves and growth and if it keeps going, maybe will get blooms. Here is what she is suppose to look like one day.

Gosh, mekos, tough question. There is actually quite a bit we can grow, just not much for any tropical. I have tulips, crocus, no daffs (left them all at the old house) lilacs, roses, morning glories, allysum, daisies, 2 delphiniums, hyacinths, allium, sweet william, zinnias, asters, blue flax, wallflowers, cosmos, sunflowers, some kind of wild mint, daylilies, ca poppies, oriental poppies, huechera, columbine, irises. I'm sure I'm missing some, but..... Coneflowers usually do good here, but for some reason I am having a hard time getting them and black eyed susans to take off. My bee balm also didn't make it through the summer, I don't think. My catmint, (walkers low) just didn't grow much, but am hoping next year, assuming it makes it thru the winter. Does that help?

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI Everlyone. I'm on for a bit before I give in and fall asleep. Not much sleep last night 2 dogs wanted lots fo attention for some reason. Wake up time came much too soon after that and one dog didn't want me to get up. Barely had time to get my juice before herded out the door. Went to sister's house got all kinds of goodies and dropped off all kinds of goodies. Then an hour's drive to another place from her house, then wait 30 minutes or so while DH and guy talked and talked and talked. Another 2 hours before I got home. And I get to repeat all this tomorrow except instead of sister's house we are to stop at another guy's house for a mower engine then go to first guy's house to pick up a riding mower. Anyone want to go in my place?
Robin I do have the seeds I promised you now but haven't took time yet to see what's in there yet.
Flower I'd love some of your lilys pretty please. Either or both will make me happy.
Mekos your flowers are so pretty.
Well I'm off before my eyes decide they are closing no matter what I want. Maybe back later tonight.

WOW, Mindy, You get some rest. That makes me breathe hard just reading about your day.
Well, Skellogg, I have several of those things growing here, I'll collect some seeds. This spring when the daffodils bloom so I can tell where the different ones are, remind me and I'll share some, I have all kinds and colors and shapes of them. Lots of different colored daylilies and different irises, but they got to be blooming for me to get them, because I didn't put markers by them with names. Squirrels have a habit of rearranging stuff outside for me, so would never find stuff unless it's blooming or in the screen room in a pot. I think I have about every color petunia there is. They reseed and come back with more colors than the year before.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks a bunch sk! I am in the exchange. BTW - our friend mekos has everything I swear - lol. If you can't find it, chances are she has it. It's been light rain off and on all day - soooooo happy. I was hoping to get the compost dug into my raised beds, but maybve tonight. Today is the first day under 100 since maybe May?!?! It is overcast and 75 degrees with 73% humidity - that means more rain before the day is done!! The forecast is for 97 F today, but don't think it's gonna get that hot! I'm lovin' it!

Mindy - you get some sleep girl!

See mekos - you can kill your plants with kindness.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

hellooooo everyone :)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hiya cue!

Guess what? It's raining in the desert - hee hee hee . . .

Yes Loca, I do it all the time. I usually OVERWATER. The simple things you usually start with because even I would be ok, well those don't have a long life span here.Tropicals usually do better because they mostly like misting and humid conditions. I can do that. LOL
I'm working on some "collections" I want. I have several of the Amorphophallus -cobra lilies, looking for more kinds. (If anyone has any for trade, be sure to scream out!) Jack in the pulpits-there are so many different ones.
So glad you are getting rain, Loca. It cooled our temperatures also and so much cooler to go out now. It's in the upper 60's at night and low 80's most days and some upper 80's, but I'll take it over those close to 100's. Maybe it will stay this way for a while.
I had to go water plants today, first time in a couple weeks. Gathered a few seeds also. My white cyprus vine is blooming and I want to catch a few of those seeds too. (Didn't find any yet.) Repotted my little brug baby. It's just shooting right up there.(red brug,)

HI CUE! Wondered where you were.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Wow, Mindy, and I thought I was busy! I'd trade you places for tomorrow, but have plans to spend the day with DD, DSIL, and the grandbabies! Maybe some other time, teehee. Get some well earned rest.

Mekos, where do you put it all. I am impressed! Wish I'd have known about you when I was in SC visiting earlier this year. I would have loved to see your gardens! I bet they are stupendous!

Hey cue! Not raining here! LOL!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Mekos, how do fuchsias do for you there? I have 3 different ones every year in hanging baskets, and can't figure out how to keep them alive inside over the winter, so have to replace every year. This year they haven't done anything outside, and still not sure if they will live, let alone grow!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Mindy I'll send you some of the lilies too. This will probably be the last that I'll be able to send out unless some one want just the little bitty bulbils.
