Has anyone grown an avocado tree from a pit?

In the north, we can't grow avocado trees outside except in the warm months. So we take them inside during the cold months. It has to do with the temperature but also the angle of the sun.

Ahh thanks for the info, venice. I would imagine a frost, let alone the weather you experience in IN, would kill one. I'm glad you can still grow one, though!
