Well I took Gracie for a little check up and she is doing great. Good check up. We are excited. We just got back from a 45 min walk and she is tired. She loves to cuddle and watch t.v. with me! Ronna
Let's see your pets!
LadyDragon
Have you tried other rescue organizations out of your area???? There are so many out there. What state are you traveling to, to find the breed your looking for. Many times there are Rescue Organiztions who specialize in breed only. Check out this rescue organization www.paain.org
Sometimes when you start to net work, you may just find a rescue dog of the breed your looking for.....
Good Luck!

Decided to do some checking myself, and came across this web site..
http://flatcoatedretriever.rescueme.org/Michigan
That is just one of the many that were there when I googled it....I am sure if you put in other surounding states, you may get a hit.....

I am on a role.....check out this website, they specialize in long distance adoptions....this picture was taken from the website....

gardenlady123, she is sooo pretty and looks like she has always been your baby, likes the bed...I wish I could go for walks....we have acreage so my baby's run and "hunt" all day long..lol lol lol
LadyDragon, yes as deann said you can find some great rescues but please read the fine print...I looked and looked like you have but for a great dane, found some I would have loved to get but after reading the "rules"...some you have to pay a fee just to apply for the dog..not that you will get the dog..no refund! then if your app. is good enough they do a home check..may get turned down then..no refund!!! but if you do get the dog...if something comes up they can come get the dog.....and you have to give them back!!! no questions ask.. your dog is gone....
I started to ask around and this was the advice that was given to me!!! it sure helped me in looking at all the sites for the fine print....I found the fine print when I went to the app page...
remember the fiasco with Ellen D and the little dog she gave to a little girl? the rescue place came and got the baby from the little girl...broke her heart...was all over the news...
just an FYI..Jody
jody
Very interesting.......did not think rescue organizations had a "fee". Those places are not real rescue organizations, but scams as far as I'm concerned. Most Rescue organizations will charge you for the spay/nueter, and various shots the dog will need. They are not in it to make money but to find "forever homes" for the animals. That is how PAAIN operates. PAAIN also writes grants to fund thier rescue program.
Deann
TOTALLY agree....I wouldn't mind paying a "fee" to help with food and bills they have for my baby..but draw the line when they say what you can and can't do with them...if your putting out 100's of bucks ...they should think your into it for the baby...not to hurt them or anything thing else...
one place even said if the dog passes, you HAVE TO write to them, tell them what happened, copy of vet papers and something else, can't remember...sorry...I wont do all that....
we have our two Dane's that are both papered...all we did was start talking and from a friend from a friend to a friend we got them...I thank God for my babies..all 7...
because of my babies.. we sleep with our doors open, leave our keys in the car...oh my daughter came and stayed the night and when we got her stuff out of her car, she set the alarm...I laughed and told her my truck is unlocked and the keys are in the ignition..lol lol lol ....
but with all things....God gives you what you need! may not be today but he will.. took us about 2 weeks to get our Dane's....
LadyDragon..
just a thought...go to breeders and ask them to keep you in mind if someone can no longer take care of their dog...moving, loss of job or what ever..and vet in your area...they have bulletin boards..post..or call and see if they'll post..call animal shelters...we did and when they got a Persian cat my daughter wanted they called...
just a thought....

I looked at rescue groups as far away as Wahington DC, Georgia, including the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America.
Flat-coated Retrievers are fairly rare and not many of them turn up in rescue (and that is a good thing).
Your right, rescue groups can be very controlling. One group had two dogs I was interested in but turned me down because I was over 2 hrs. (actually 2hr. 15 min.) away from their town. I looked all over and a month later I contacted them and asked if they would reconsider since they still had both dogs. They agreed but shunted me to a dog that really wasn't suitable (I want to train for therapy work), talked me into that dog and then were upset that I returned her after having her evaluated by a therapy trainer. They still wouldn't wouldn't me see the dogs I originally was interested in, since I had been "picky". This was after I had gone through numerous questonaires, a home visit, and large deposit, which was not returned because I changed my mind!
While the breeders are careful who gets their puppies, they are NOTHING like the volunteer rescue groups. They want a pint of blood!
so sorry you are having problems....but as I said.. it will work out..most of the time in ways you'll never see coming...
Jody
You are so right. I really believe that things happen for a reason so it looks like I am destined to go back to the puppy stage.
Wow with the SPCA we just filled out an online application. Then they contacted us we went to a adoption event and picked out the Gracie girl!!! Sorry you are having such a time. Hope you find a good baby one way or another... The flat coated retrives are georgeous.... I really have never heard of that breed. But you did say they were quit rare. Are they good mellow dogs? Must be if you are looking far and wide. Best of luck to you. Ronna
Yes, they are very laid back and they love all things; dogs, cats, people. They love to be with their people and are not the kind of dog you can leave out in a yard or kennel all day. They are very smart and are good agility dogs, bird dogs and therapy dogs and well as showing well. Fun loving and into everything if you don't keep them busy doing a job. They are said to be the "Peter Pan" of the dog world.
the sound great!
they sound like a giant size Jack Russell...lol lol lol
Oh man I am so proud of our "new" dog Gracie. She is doing so good with the walks and especially the cats.. Keep it up you good girl! Ronna
thats great...it doesn't take then long to get so appreciative...
I found out I'm getting a baby....pot belly pig that is....My son got one but it keeps biting his dogs...he has young dogs.. I have older dogs that won't stand for getting chewed upon..lol lol..I told him she is a baby and when she was with her bothers and sisters, they play that way....my kids had a pot belly when they were growing up...
but my son and his wife work and they have no time to train a baby pig....so mom, that stays and runs greenhouses has the time...
give me a couple of days and I may not sound so nice about having a pig again....lol lol lol
frog if u havent had a welcome to the mich forum-WELCOME!

dori
froghollowlady.... A pot belly pig? Well I guess the beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!! They would not be for me.... LOL. Glad you have room the for the pig. Or where would it be going? That is the sad thing avout these kinds of pets right? Have a good time training it. Post some pictures after you get it. Whats his name? Do you keep them in the house or out? I know questions, questions. Just curious;) Ronna
I am a newbie, was wanting to post something about my babies cause I am "sick". 2 1/2 weeks ago, my "Peach" kitty disappeared and on Wednesday morn I put "Max" (gray tiger) outside cause he was gagging and he's gone now too.Dam Coyotes around here. Anyone got ideas, other than forcing my cats to stay indoors. We lost a cat 1 1/2 years ago as well. I am sure it's the Coyotes. My cats love my gardens and follow me around all day outside. They even find the cat nip and they go crazy-fun to watch.
My search for a companion dog after I put to sleep my 12 yr old Shadow has ended. Yesterday I brought home a black female Flat-Coated Retriever named Stonewall's Black Pepper. Pepper is settling in and getting used to her new home. We are going through the usual crying, barking and being lost without brothers and sisters, but I think things are going well. Nothing like having a dog again even though I might not get much sleep!
AAAWWWW dragonlady she is so cute. Show a good picture of her face. I do not think I have ever seen a Flat coated Retiever before. You will have fun with her I am sure. Congrats a new dog is fun. Sorry about your cats yvmamoran... Thats to bad. I would miss my cats also. Ronna
We are doing well for the second night. Not as much crying and much more investigating. She is smart and learns fast, sometimes too fast about things she can and can't do, like using those little sharp baby teeth.
Flat- Coats are fairly rare. They are primarily gun dogs; pheasant and good water dogs. I wanted one for their easy-going laid back tempament and the fact that they are lovers of all things, people, dogs, cats. They can't be left in a kennel outside all day but want to be with their people. Smart dogs with field trial, tracking skills, and good theraphy dogs. My last dog was an unpapered Flat- Coat and I could think of having anything else. Unlike regular Labs she will have a plumy tail, feathers on all four legs and a bit of feathering on the ears. Shiny soft smooth coats, too
So cute! Love the jet black coat. Ronna.
Does anyone here own a cat named 'Curly Sue'?
I don't but I got a new puppy named Chewy and if he would ever stay still long enough I get a pic
Gloria
Hey Wiggley Paw,
I just took in a Pug. I was working on a house I own in Inkster, MI. when the neighbor told me someone had moved 2 weeks ago and left a dog in the yard!! I have heard the stories but never thought i would get to save a dog from the economic woes of this state!
Well his name is Gordon and i have turned him over to the Pug Rescue in Farmington Mi.
Here is his Picture. i had him for 4 days and i swear One more day and I would have kept him.
You bond with these little lovelies and then I can't give them away to anyone!!
I have never had the breed but he was adorable, smart and very loving.
Well I learned something. And I hope the little guy gets a great home!
Julie
P.S. I have loved seeing all your pictures and reading all the posts here!!
Pugs, cute. I personally dont like them but they are cute. I am glad you got to him in time poor little guy! I wonder why or how people can do things like this? Sad. They couldv'e turned him over there selves... Kinda makes me mad. How would they like it if someone did that to them? I better not get started! Ronna
Julie
What a wonderful thing you did....You saved that little guys life. Your right Ronna.....I deplore people who do leave their animals behind....with no food or water....
You did the right thing by turning it over to the Pug rescue.....they will find it a "forever home".
Deann
good job Jazzy makes you want to reach out and touch some one HARD when you see some one do that !!!
Gloria
aaawwww how cute !!!
Gloria
Brenda
What a cutie pie, can eat her with a spoon!
Deann
Thanks! These kittens really lucked out getting a new home with us. When we got them they were too young, full of fleas and ear mites and worms. I think we saved their life. I hope they do well. We got their first shots on Friday. We got back in a month for round 2. The granddaughter loves to play with them so they're nice and socialized and not wild. They are very sweet.
Brenda
Well aren't we the New Michigan 'animal rescue' Gals!!
I always knew we had the best Gardeners in Michigan
But who knew how much we all love animals too!!
Loon ...nice job saving the kitties.
I am also happy i saved a little guy. But i have found so many and returned them to their owners over the years. I live on a busy road downtown. Many dogs who come on my property are caught by me. Then my signs go up..
You know generic ones saying..."Did you lose a dog..? Call 810-629-6020"
I works everytime. Well one time I hadthe same dog tied up out here 7 times. The last time she left her here all weekend because (as she told me) she decided to have a break from the dog.
She knew she would find him here!!
Some people! After all my warnings to her about the dog being hit by a car or worse...It finally was.
Well that experience changed my mind. Now if a dog finds it's way here 3 x's I feel a deeper duty to help the DOG not the Owner!!
Well I am in a good crowd of Animal Lovers. I am sure you all have a story of saving animals.
let's hear 'em.
Julie
I'm so glad that you all love animals as much as I do !!!I tryed going without a dog for 8 months and had to give in I was so lonesome so now I have Chewy who is on my lap as we speak I am so much happier with a baby to love ;0)
Gloria
We went to our first Puppy socialization Class and I feel like I am doing everything wrong. Thank goodness my kids gre up OK so maybe I can't go too wrong with the dog! But we have a lot to work on. No biting, barking, jumping up, etc. With a lively retriever we have all those things and more.
Yes, with a dog that big you really need to get the basics down quick. Just the jumping up on people with a Newf is a big deal! Our trainer says the earlier you get them going the better as you have only a limited time to teach those basics and the first one we learned was walking on a lease. At 60 lbs and 5 months you will have a hard time of it.
Jazzy........have you met BRADY? We got BRADY a year ago. My daughter who lives in Indiana founded a Rescue Operation called PAAIN.......People Assisting Animals In Need.......
Some #@*(& people dumped two German Shepherd puppies down a dirt road. Whenever I think about this it just makes my blood boil...anyway, the poor things took refuge on a farmers porch, and he fed them for a few days thinking they would leave and go back home. That never happened. After a week he called my daughter Donna, and she came out and picked up the pups. She called me and asked if I was interested in one of them. After the pups were fully vetted (all shots, micro chipped, spay/neutered) we then drove down to Indiana to choose one of those pups. Was very difficult as I wanted to take both of them, however we also have a 7 year old German Shepherd as well, so I knew I was really pushing my luck.
We choose Brady, and have not regretted one moment. Rescue dogs are the way to go. There are so many out there looking for "Forever Homes".
Brady is the pup on the left as your viewing the picture. That pix was taken the day we picked him up. I will post another pix of what he looks like today.
