Deann,

Brady is just beautiful. I can't imagine anyone dumping babies on a road anywhere. That's just unforgiveable. There are many rescue groups out there willing to take them or you can take them to the shelter. I'm so glad Brady found a forever home with you.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Wow! Brady is huge and geourgeous! Glad you are so happy with him... :)Ronna

Our newf puppy is 6-1/2 months old now. When we got her she weighed 15 lbs. Now she's 70 lbs. Had her spayed at the vet yesterday and she's doing well. Training starts in January!

Pepper, the Flat-Coated Retriever is 15 weeks now and almost 35 lbs. We have been to puppy class and she learns better from the instructor than from me. She has learned the basics and does well when there are no distractions ( like other dogs or people).
She really needs someone to walk and play with her. She thinks that should be me all the time since I am the only one here. At 70 with limited mobility, I will be taking her to doggie day care and trying to find someone to walk her faster than I can to wear her out.

My biggest problem is housebreaking. She has a crate, does well during the day when confined to two rooms and knows to go when outside, but hasn't got it down on how to let me know when she has to go out. I could put up with the rest of the puppy things if she would just learn to give me a sign when she has to go outside.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I had a dog years ago that wouldn't let me know when she had to go out either. She'd just go by the door and stand there. I finally hung up some bells on the door knob and taughter her to lift her paw and ring the bells. She was smart and learned how to do that in one day. I even had a cat that learned from her how to do it. :) She's an angel now but I saved her bells and they hang on the picket fence behind her gravesite.

Kristi, your dog is beautiful. She is a very large baby!! I'm sure you're enjoying her. I hope she recoveres from her spay fast. Good luck with the training.

Chewy is doing well also hes 13 weeks old now and weighs around 5-6 lbs. will find out for sure on Tuesday when we go to the vet for the last of his puppy shots he just squeeks when he wants out which is about every 20 min. he loves being out side but I have to watch it his feet get so cold ;0)

Brenda,

Yes the bell thing works well. Our Baby learned quickly too. We just rang the bell every time we took her out and in no time she was ringing it herself.

Our only remaining problem is she's easily spooked when outside--trucks, cars, any loud noises at all and she runs to the door. Hence, she needs to go out more frequently in order to do what she needs to do. She doesn't always get a walk because of this. She plays in a large yard and we play with her a lot indoors. She was born in the country (Brooklyn, MI) but we're pretty urban here.

Merry Christmas everyone!

We were lucky the freezing rain didn't start until after our family Christmas Eve party. Baby's in her glory today with the cold rain. She runs and runs and runs. This is Newfoundland weather.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Well we finally got our baby this past Friday, she is 6 weeks old and since I got to pick the kind of dog I wanted, DH got to name her. He chose RUTH, but to me she looks like an Abby lol It's so hard to call her Ruth...

Connie

Deann our puppy's daddy looks just like your Brady, the mom is black and silver,
Ruth has very very little silver on her, She is going to be beautiful when she gets big.
She has the colors of the first shepherd we had.

We sadly had to put our much beloved 13 yr. old Chihuahua "Haley" down on Dec. 31 from congestive heart failure. We miss her terribly.

Connie, congratulations on the new addition to your furkid family. That baby is adorable. Maybe your husband likes "baby Ruths" and thus the name he gave to her.

Cottage Rose, please accept my condolences on the lost of Haley. I'm so sorry. She sure was a cutie. It's so hard to lose a pet that's been around so long. It's like losing a member of the family.

Cassie,

You have some very fine looking pets there. OMG, you have snakes! I think that's admirable. I have garter snakes and talk to them when I see them. I think they are as afraid of me as I am of them. :)

Congratulations on your new furbaby......I just know you are gonna love the German Shepherd breed. They are so loyal and loving. Brady continues to grow even though he is only 19 months old....I think we are gonna have to buy a saddle for him, he is now 125lbs, and next to Cyndee looks like a giant. Cyndee is 7 years old, and thinks Brady is her baby, she is the one with her head on Brady's back. Will try to get better pix for you to see the big difference in their sizes.

My heart goes out to you on the passing of your beloved furbaby, Haley. Please take comfort in knowing that she has crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge and is no longer in pain. My German shepherd Blaze met her at the bridge and is keeping a eye out for her as she gets acquainted with all of the other furbabies that are there waiting for their mom's to pick them up and take them to heaven.

The picture of Blaze was taken in your prime,I think he was a round 6 years old at the time. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge at 13 years old.

When our St. Bernard was being taken to the vet on her final day, through tears I told her she would meet all of our other dogs in doggie heaven. They could run and play and sit around talking about us, tell old stories.

I look forward to the day when I can have a dog again - just love them! I am gone too many hours during the day to provide a proper environment for one, so I love everyone elses dog right now.

The one thing that was the hardest for me after I lost my dog was opening the door when I came home. You know how they are excited when you open the door and you instinctively put your leg between the open door and door jamb so they can't bound out, put your leg there without realizing it? Two years after loosing Lucky I still opened the door with my leg braced for the bounding love.

I look forward to the proper time when I can use my leg as a barrier again.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Thank you all for your kind comments.
My condolences to all of you who have lost pets.
I told my husband "no more Chihuahuas"!
We just get too attached to them.
When Tango our mama Chi was hit and killed by a car
I experienced what seemed like the same level of grief
as when a person died.
I've had a lot of dogs come and go over the years
but never felt quite that level of grief before when losing a dog.
I didn't know what to make of it but one thing I do know is
dogs just don't live long enough. :(

I know that is so true! Our adopted dog Gracie is doing great! We are so happy she is fitting right into every part of our life. Our 16 old cat has been pretty sick... Pepper has hyperthyroid now. He used to weight 19 lbs! I changed his food to chicken soup for the cat lovers soul adult light around four years ago. He went down to 10 lbs! Wow now with the thyroind problem he weighs only 6! He is so light. But the meds are really helping a whole bunch. I was worried he wasn't going to make it. He would only lay behind the chair and sleep. did not want to be bothered in any way. Now he is running around and being Pepper! He love the yogurt he gets every day with his pills. yummy stuff. Thank God for Vets! Ronna

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I had a cat that was on the thyroid meds for a long time. He was so sick before we discovered it was his thyroid. He would puke something fierce. THe medication fixed him right up. Unfortunately, he developed lymph noid cancer and we had to put him to sleep. He was 16. He lost an awful lot of his fur with the thyroid problem. I would comb out enough fur to make a new cat out of . :)

Deann, Ruth is our 3rd shepherd, we got a male (Brutus) when he was 2 weeks old and had to bottle feed him. His mom died having the last of the litter.
We had to have him put down :(

But we had one of his pups (Amos) for a long time, then Ken found him dead one morning, we're not sure what killed him.

We have been many years without a pet, we just never had time these past few years to give to one. But we both agreed it was time now ^_^

I love German Shepherds, the only difference is now I have a female and she is being trained for indoors. No more out side dogs for us. We were so stupid for putting Brutus out side instead of taking the time to housebreak him

Ruth has her accidents but for the most part she is doing good, so far she really fuses and whines when she has to poop and even sniffes around the front door, its like she refuses to poop in the house LOL that's what DH says, but if we don't take her out right after she either wakes up or drinks, she will pee in the house.

Alos, I was surprised the first day Ken put a collar on her, she didn't fight it at all and in one day she took to a lease, once in a while she'll get stubborn with it on. but we just say come one girl and she stops fighting it. She is really smart ^_^

The only thing we are really having a problem with is her answering to her name, but I don't think it will be to much longer before she answers to it.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Brenda, it sure is hard when the pets are sick huh? I do not like to see the hurt in ther eyes. After having them so long you can tell just by looking. He is better now. The vet wants to take more blood from the poor guy this week. She doesn't sound so hopeful. We'll see, I will miss him so much when he is gone. Cold out your way? The winds are howling tonight. We did get some sun though. Ronna

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Connie

Puppies need to go potty after they eat, play and just get up.....I have trained my two shepherds to pee or poop on command........I know that sounds incredible but it can be done......when I take them out as puppies, I would encourage them to "Go Potty" and as soon as they did, would praise them to no end....it took awhile but it works. Its called "conditioning"

Ruth sounds like a wonderful pup....Are you going to breed her? Both of our shepherds have been altered. They say dogs live longer if they are spayed or neutered.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

hi Deann !!! every one thinks I'm nuts cuz when I tell Chewy to go potty or poo he dose they think I'm making it up LOL hes only 5 months but hes a good boy Most of the time ;0)
Gloria

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Glorai your puppy sound awsome... All of the pets on here are so beautiful. Very lucky animals they are, right? A young lady at work just rescued a puppy form someones yard. She was very skinny and sick. How can people do that? She didn't even have any shelter no food or water. Cold nights and days. Our dog is covered up with a blanket at night and sleeps on the couch all the time!!! Well what can I say? I'm sure most of yours does too;) Have a great week, Ronna

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

This is our Decker Terrier "Shelby".
Not too many people know about them
and think they are just big Rat Terriers but
they are a separate breed with their
own breed standard and registry.
They are great people dogs and fearless hunters.
They will hunt anything from squirrels to wild boars.

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Deann I had read that you can command them to go potty and that's what I have been doing. We are also training her to go in just one certain area of the yard, so far its working ^_^

Ken thinks I am crazy for taking her out right after she gets done eating and drinking, says she needs time, but as soon as she drinks she pees and then about 5 min. later she poops. And she gets praised believe me. She knows what good girl means :o) She comes running in the house and goes to right where her treats are too.

She is really a smart puppy, but she is very stubborn... Right now I am having a problem with her biting, she loves to bite feet (she really doesn't bite, it's more like she is trying to chew) She has plenty of chew toys. And she absolutely loves Kens Tennis shoes. She likes sleeping on them with her nose stuck down inside of them. It's hilarious.

We are going to get her fixed, I was told to let her have her first heat and then get her fixed, I take her to her first vets visit the 16th and will find out how true that is. But no, we don't want to breed her.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Connie

That is a fallacy on letting your dog go thru one heat. Now a days they alter puppies as young as 2 months old....

Puppies love to bite, and chew, and its great she has her own chew toys. Let her know the difference when she does bite and it hurts. I am so glad your potty training is coming along fine.....Good idea on having her go in one section of your yard. I just take it for granted with where my dogs go since I have 200 acres.....But they do manage to go in pretty much the same spots....note I said spots.....

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Very beautiful doggie there cottagerose! Connie your dog sounds wonderful. Have a great day! Ronna

Max the Tonk (Tonkinese). A very big loveable lunk. He'd ride on my shoulder all day if I let him. Loves playing "swiffer", where I put him on his back and "mop" the floor with him.
