Good looking GI Maria!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Yes, he was Dave. It was a mirracle he survived the war, D-Day for one thing, also he was an engineer, they were the first ones to clear the path for the infantry, building bridges, checking for mines , tried to break through to help the guys at the Battle of the Bulge. later his company was about to be shipped to Japan but that war ended just in time so he was sent to Vienna for occupational purposes and this is where I met him while I studied at the University of Vienna, my first year, and he took some classes there. Hope this does not bore anyone, just want you to know he was quite a wonderful guy aside from his looks.

That's a great photo of great-grand father, you are very lucky to have it

Wow - how cool, Nancy! Do you know much about your family tree? Wish I knew more. Just finished watching a fantastic show on Nat Geo about the great human family tree. I highly recommend it. Coincidentally, it is centered around Astoria, Queens!

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

I just watched that show too - fascinating! I've been toying with the idea of doing that genealogical DNA thing - the cost has come way down recently. I think you can do it for about 80 bucks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's the link to Nat Geo. You can get the kit from them for $100, with some $ going to the project.

The bummer is that females don't carry the Y chromosome, so they are limited to the 'maternal mitochondrial DNA' test. Males get get either. So the dad's line for females is lost in all this.

Funny - I was just discussing doing this with my wife and at first I said that would require $300 to cover my two and my wife's one. But then - duh! - we have kids! Two tests on them would cover the same as three for us.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

For the dad's line for females, I think you can have a brother do the test, if you have one and if I remember correctly, possibly some other male relatives (uncle? cousin?).

Just did a quick search, but I think this might give some info

nice photo Gabagoo... amazing it's in that great shape!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

60 minutes did a thing on these tests and family trees and found them to be completely inaccurate - i can remember they interviewed several black family's that supposedly all had blood lines leading to tribal chiefs back in Africa - when they went to experts on the subject their opinion was it is a scam.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's true, Dee.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

DNA testing has come a long way since its first inception. Back in the day, EVERYONE claimed to be from royalty and there were many scams around. However, I don't think National Geographic would put its good name behind a scam or do a segment that was not proven to be accurate. If they promote a scientific company for these tests I would trust it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I am royal.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I am a peon.
