Dany's garden # 5

szarvas, Hungary

Or this one .
Somewhere we spoke to take branches and kept in a vase - As I saw a photo of Debra. But if there is no leaf, so no photosynthesis whose embryos remain premature.

Dany - when the stem to the seed pods show signs of shriveling up, that is when I pick mine. If the stems are shriveled right underneath the pod, then I know it is not getting anything from the vine any longer. You can cut the branches and put them in a vase in water until they ripen. I have had rust on vines that totally destroyed the leaves. No leaves, just stems and branches and the seed pods still ripened just fine. So if you need to cut the branches to avoid a frost, the seed pods should continue to ripen that way without any problems. And my pods are always a nice brown color and crispy/crunchy to the touch. If you squeeze the pods too hard, they will crumble if they are good and ripe. I hope that helps. :-)

Do you have help with all the seed collecting?

scarlet o'hara
dany you said is a dark pink
now I now that mgs the colors fade pretty fast is it possible that it is red but only in the opening stages and as soon as it is open it starts to fade so takes on the spectrum of pinks from the darkest going lighter as the blooms fades ????

(Zone 7a)

Dany, if you put branches of MG pods that are close to being fully ripe in water and if those branches have no leaves, then in my experience, also, you will probably get some viable seeds of good quality. The stems, if they are green, will continue to photosynthesize. (Be sure to include a teaspoon or so of H202 (hydrogen peroxide) to the water to slow down formation of slime on the stems)

But it's good to keep in mind another thing that happened when I did this - although the first pods to mature like this are usually fine, it's the ones that ripen last that will tend to yield seeds of poor quality; that is, the later ripening seeds may have sunken sides, rather than be plump, or be tiny, shriveled things. I call those iffies and do not pass those ones along as gifts or trades.

Leaves will definitely help the percentage and quality of seeds that you would harvest. With leaves, the less ripe pods may have a better chance of giving seeds of good quality.
------------

Mona, when I grew the true Scarlet O'Hara from Ron's seed in 2006, the color stayed brilliantly red for quite a while into the day without fading. The blaze of those flowers was one of the most wonderful things in the garden that year. I really regret that I did not plant those seeds in pots so I could have brought them indoors to ripen. Someday I hope to grow them again.

Becky:

I'm planning to inter-plant them with some clems this next year. Contrasting colors. Just doing a few. But I've got new places to plant the MGs now. Fence line that now has good morning sun and some afternoon sun. so there must be MG's on that fence line....LOL

I know this post is a little old, but that second Morning
Glory 'Star of India' I think it is, is gorgeous. You have
a very nice selection.

(Zone 7a)

Zinniared, an especially nice thing about Star of India is that, for me, it is one of the earliest-to-flower-from-seed cultivars belonging to Ipomoea nil - nice to know if you're trying to grow them late in the season or farther north or at higher latitudes.

szarvas, Hungary

On Yahoo.jp - 3 seeds for 500 yens.

The picture shows, if I mistake not, Ipomoea indica blue and pink!
The commentary says there are 2 colors. WOW
See buds!

Picture by a fresh morning - two-tone blue purple and pink. And the second variety is the tiny pink flower pink in the center of the photo?

Caution!

Interesting and very pretty! I wonder if the pink is the faded color of the blooms?
What is that tiny pink bloom? Also an I. indica or some other MG?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

mg seeds can be left on the vine to ripen the cold will not affect them even if the leaves all fall off and you can also pick them green and put them one layer on a plate in the sun to dry and they will still be viable it will not affect germination percentage at all as long as you do not try to open the pods till they are completely dry so about a month if its still green or until the seeds are completely black my season is short so I always pick mine as soon as the pod is full size

szarvas, Hungary

Here are my cuttings of Ipomoea indica "Edith Piaf" ready to travel overseas - the all in a bubble envelope.
I'll sent 2 envelopes to be sure that at least one arrives.

Dany - Those rooted cuttings look great ... I guess I need to start a second cutting for each person I am trading with? I didn't even think of mailing it out twice. That is a good idea really.

My cuttings aren't rooting as quick or as nicely as yours yet. Do you have yours rooting in a sunny place or in shade? Mine are currently in full sun for most of the day. Maybe they are getting too much sun?

szarvas, Hungary

A sunny spot but a sun of november.
Ipomoea Indica would grow roots even on Mars!
The blue version is stronger than the clear version .

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Dany! I am going to start more cuttings. :-)

Mona - Who is this seller? Just wondering if it is someone we know.

$2.99 seeds + $3.60 shpg. = $6.59 total How many seeds did you get? 5 or 6?

Pretty bloom! :-) Be sure to post photos when you grow it out and it blooms!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

That's a gorgeous bloom Mona. We'll all be eager to see and
enjoy your blooms with you.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

That one's a beauty too Mona. Love the eye color.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I have purchased 14 different ones for next summer vines I cant believe how beautifull they are I actually moved some of my large perennials away from the chain link fence so I can grow more JMGs I just love them so much I will have to make some topiaries so I can grow more of them

Gautier, MS

I ordered from the same seller, got my first order in record time. But my second order hasn't come yet after waiting 2 weeks I haven't received Blue Pearl or that other very expensive one and I'm kind of sick to my stomach about it. Hoping it may still come but I now doubt it will.

szarvas, Hungary

Helena, you talked about them Silver Wolf?
I'm sure that for Christmas he will make us a gift. 4 fat seeds for no more than $ 20. I'm optimistic!
Is a nice photo Silver Wolf.

I thought someone here mentioned about the gray wolf seeds taking much longer to ship (like Spring 2010)? I hope you get yours, Helena. If not, then you can contact the seller and try to settle the situation. And if you still don't get anywhere, then file a complaint with eBay. It will take time, but you will get your money back minus a small eBay charge. Good luck!

Mona - Glad you purchased more than just one packet. That is more economical to order several and pay one shipping charge. I. nils require rich soil you may have to amend the area around your fence. Beautiful photos of the blooms! :-)

Gautier, MS

Yes Dany, that was 3 seeds of Silver Wolf and the Blue Pearl. I can only hope that they still arrive in the mail. Did you order them also?

Gautier, MS

Becky I contacted the seller to let him know that I still didn't receive the seeds at 2 weeks and he asked me to wait another 2 weeks. I've only had problems not getting seeds from one other seller whos no longer selling and another for sending the seeds without any bubble wrap to protect the salvia seeds but he sent me more after I complained that I got mashed seed pulp. We'll see how this goes.

Beautiful flowers and truly an amazing job, perfect neat columns.

Gautier, MS

Oh Wow Dany beautiful!

Well, in the back of my mind I thought if I said anything maybe I might receive my seeds after all. I'm happy to have egg on my face and eat crow too, I should have been a little more patient. Yes I received the Silver Wolf and Blue
Pearl seeds today. I'm very happy and will be very careful when I sow those rare seeds.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - So glad to hear you got your seeds just fine. Murphy's Law, ya know! You complain and then they show up! LOL!

Dany - Are the above photos of all the vines taken from your place or at the Kyushu University? The neat rows look like how the university does their vines. Enjoyed those photos! Neat way to grow MG vines! :-)

We are going there.
