Dunno . . .

I'm off to Peter Piper for a birthday party. See you all later.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I had an awesome day today.. didn't work in the yard until tonight and it was just watering the lasagna beds. I met this man a while back while outside working in my yard and we were talking about his hay he grew. I went over to his place this morning with my son and wow.. Has anyone ever met someone and walked away knowing what a special person they were? He showed us all around his 130 acre farm, he had the most beautiful Quarter Horse mares you ever laid eyes on, and his stallions were across the street and they were even more beautiful than the mares. He had every piece of antique tool & equipment and he even built his own sawmill. He turned it on for us and showed us how it worked, it was amazing. Then he took us to his house to show us his henhouses he built from wood he sawed using his sawmill out of downed trees on his property. We came to my house so we could show him where the hay would go and he told us about his wife that had been killed in a car wreck not too far from my house some years ago. He had a life lesson story to go with that, but too long to tell you guys right now.He told us this as I showed him my kitchen and how ugly it is, (we're remodeling it) and as I gave him a glass of water, he told me how much I would appreciate my kitchen when the new cabinets were in. He went on to tell us that he didn't finish school when he was young and that he thought he was just a dumb old farmer. But you know, it was great for my son (he's almost 18) as we drove home I told him that man may not have an education but he has the biggest heart and he was smart. In a different way.. and he could work his tail off and fix anything. I wish there were more people like him in the world..

Nice experience Mechelle. Sounds like the start of a great friendship and a win win day for all three of you. Men like that have bushels of knowledge and no one who wants to hear it or learn from it. Hopefully you'll be able to continue. Take him some of Robin's blueberry pie. :)

Ok, I just have to tell you guys this part.. he and his wife were best friends. They did everything together, she helped him turn wrenches on cars in his shop, she helped run the sawmill, they were close as two people could get. Shortly before she died, she was riding with him in her truck and out of the blue she decided to tell him that she had a clause on her insurance policy that said if she was wearing her seatbelt and was killed in a car wreck, it would pay her husband $10,000.00. He said she stared at the floorboard for a second and told him "If they say I wasn't wearing a seatbelt don't believe them because I was" Well thats exactly what happened- they said she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. He had to have her truck towed to his shop and he checked the seatbelt and when he pulled it out (this is sad) and it had her dried blood on it, and it had rolled back into the slot. So he called the insurance adjuster out to show him what he discovered and they paid him. He said the day she had her wreck they were apart and he started to feel like there was something really wrong.. Like how twins can sense when something is wrong with the other. He drove towards Middleton where she was and came across the scene. I was literally about to ball. He stayed with his mother after she died because he couldn't go home without her. He said he would rather have slept in her wrecked truck than go home because that was the last place she breathed. She also had planted a tree over the sawmill to shade it years ago and he said it was "Robin's Tree" When I say he was smart, he walked around his property and told me what kind of tree every tree was and what he knew about them. This might sound crazy, but it really was a moving, phenomenal day for me. My spirit was definitely touched to say the least. I called my husband as soon as I got home and told him all about it. Life's little things.. mean so much. ;-) Nite everyone.. see you in the am.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

OMG Seray thats spooky.. his wifes name was Robin, read my message above.. I need to get that recipe don't I?

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I started typing that message and left it and came back a minute ago and sent it before I saw yours..

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Well the chills are throughout my body. Gosh girls. Ill package up the blueberries and the recipe for you Mechelle...
Robin

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Oh my Gosh arejay, I know.. wow please do.. I don't think I have ever been so touched by anything like this before.. I don't even know what else to say.. I had to leave that message because he and his girlfriend were here to bring my hay in th PITCH dark after his truck broke down on him twice on the way to my house. This is just something else. Well they say everything happens for a reason.. guess I'll soon find out. I will SO make him that blueberry pie..

Sounds like she's watching out for him doesn't it? You were just what he needed to help him heal a little more. After awhile you run out of people to talk to about your grief and it just weighs heavy. Makes you appreciate what ya got huh? Thanks for sharing it.

Now this is what we call a Mojito time. :) Sleep tight!

HI Everyone
Lovely story Mechelle. Joeswife that zinna is so pretty and I'm being good and not begging for seeds LOL Zinnas are my favorites.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh MINDY! I just ripped out about 12 Giant California Zinnia (they were getting a weird fungus on them, so had to break down and finnally pull them out) but they were wonderful while they were thee. will definitely plant again next spring

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

They are aren't they LOL I have a beautiful yellow one here along with a pink and red. These came in my newbie pack as I forget to save seeds from them most of the time. I prefer the big ones to the smaller types.

Arroyo City, TX(Zone 9b)

Morning Everybody!

I'll be gone most of the day but, just wanted to say I hope everyone has a lovely, day with lots of sunshine and blooms!

Hugs to all.

Jamie

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Mindy - i did manage to save some blooms and hung them upside down in the kitchen window in hopes that i can save the seed, but if not, i have another seed packet of them just in case...lol.

will have to find a bew location for them tho, as i didnt realize they grew to almost 6 ft tall.. they kinda blocked the view of my brug and my hibiscus...LOL...

Hi Mindy

I have giant salmon zinnias. They're big. I've collected the seed heads and I'll send you some. Maybe I will be able to tell what is seed. LOL

I'm still learning about seeds, collecting, sending. Just became aware that the post office uses big rollers (I must have know this right?) and they Crush seeds. Duh! I thought they just confiscated them. LOL So if I sent anyone seeds in cards, which I've been known to do, and they were crushed, a full replacement is available. LOL dmail me!

I'll send yours in a Bubble envelope Mindy. :)

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Cue mine don't get that tall LOL because I don't feed them I want them to get just tall enough for me to see them and for cut flowers. They need to be were they can get plenty of air movement to combat the powdery mildew.
Seray thank you so much. The seeds are supposed to be at the end of each petal from what I read I just dry them then hang upside down and wait for the seeds to fall out.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Mindy - I didnt feed mine either! i musta had mutant Zinnia ROTFL.. I swear.. all i did was water once a week! and dead headed alot... but they kept growing... made a nice bed tho...

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Your bed is richer in nutrients than where I have mine planted next year I may end up with 6 ft tall ones too LOL

Hey cue, I was thinking of you last night. Thought you might like some seeds of the black, blue, red, and purple Petunia mix seeds. I'm new at collecting certain seeds so I went out and clipped the whole little pod where the seeds were and there was dew on the plants so it was wet and they kind of clumped together so I put them in a dish and let them dry for a few days-but they are still in clumps. If you are interested, I just had enough for you after I sent the others to arejay this morning for the newbies. They may look a little odd, but the seeds are in there if you want them. I wasn't looking for what plant they were coming off of, I was just clipping and dropping them in the same bag. You would have to put them in a flat plate and pull open the clump to get the seeds out, but if you don't mind doing that, will mail to you. Let me know if you want them. I'll collect more later, we're getting rain for the next week from what the news says. We got rain all night last night too. The plants really needed it. But it makes the seeds wet for catching.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Morning e1, thanks for letting me share that story last night. Seray, I believe you're right that she's looking out for him. I'm not a realllly religious person but I do believe in that kind of stuff. I was up late talking to my mom on the phone. I was thinking of calling her to tell her about my day when she called.. She forgets about the time zone difference so it was almost midnight when she called. It was good to talk to her.. Well my gardening plan today is to bring in the cuttings I have outside.. some of the ROS leaves are turning yellow. Maybe it's too hot for them outside? I stripped the lower leaves, is that normal for the color change? I noticed that my gardenia and hydrangea cuttings which I brought inside right after rooting them are looking nice and green. That darn hydrangea has even started to root. Couldn't help but checking it ;-) Then it's over to the neighbor's field to rake up some of his grass cuttings. Later this evening, I will transplant a hibiscus to my "tropical garden" I haven't showed anyone that one yet. Happy gardening e1 and hope you all have a good day.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Some of my Pink brug leaves that flower gave me are turning and falling... Why do you think? It makes no sense I have had it all summer....Inside.

They just do that sometimes arejay. Mine do at the slightest change of temperature or moisture. Don't panic, they will be ok. I'm trying to make some pear preserves, so will be in and out today. Have a good day.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Moisture no kidding...There has been a heavy , hot moisture in the air for a month then all of a sudden after that crazy storm the weather has cleared as has the air....We had a frost warning the other day.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh arejay they don't really like a lot of moisture. Some is ok but when it is this way they just don't like it. We have had heavy moist air here too. Hard on even us old folkes. LOL

Brugs kind of have to get use to the different temperature or moisture changes. They will adjust but dropps leaves sometimes as they change. Then when it gets humid again, it will happen again. They don't like a lot of change.
I got the preserves made. 12 jars of half pints, and 1 pint. So good! Waiting to see if they seal good.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I can smell it way up here Jan yummy...

AAAHHHH! The bloodhound nose. I like that. Guess what arejay? Just found the florida butterfly orchid that is LEGAL to ship to me. It was done by some seeds or something maybe a little different but looks so much alike. IN A NURSERY in florida. I am about to get one after all. Wonder if I could bribe them with preserves?

Shepherdsville, KY

The preserves would work. Well it sure would for me.
Oh yummy yummy....

Thanks hollyhock! You get that orchid and I'll send you two jars for it. hehehe

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I would send it to you for Pear preserves if I could get the one down outta that Cathedral Pine It would be yours Jan.

You got one in a pine, and you holding out on me? Where is Blondie, she'd get up that tree for me. She canoed out in the lake around fallen logs and braved it all to get me an air plant blooming and water lily. I just got a ground orchid in the mail with buds almost ready to bloom on it. A bunch of it. A pot full. The BIG GOD up there is surely smiling down on me. All you guys are the GREATEST!!!!

Sounds like a beauty Mekos. Show some pic when it blooms. :)

It's lil o name is Spirthanthes Cernua Var. Ordorata
I need to go look it up to see what it is suppose to look like.

Here she be. Very fragrant.
