Garden Pics: Late Summer Beauties!
Beautiful pics, Willow. Does indeed look like autumn is settling in there.
Summer- tell him not to send you those pics. Never look back.
Willow, You have some glorious color in your yard right now! All of your settings are so beautiful, and they photograph so wonderfully!
Summer, I agree with Pony...
Thank you all for your kind words.
I agree with pony and RJ. That was unkind to send those pictures. You have an amazing garden to look forward to caring for now. You can think of me as an old opinunated granny. ^_^
Summer, I'm guessing that he was trying to say (though he probably doesn't know it), "Look how much your garden [I] miss[es] you." Maybe your exish will find that the Oregon coast is starting to look better and better . . . you never know.
Patricia - ditto on your pictures. They get better and better. And I continue to be amazed at the variety of plants you have in your yard and courtyard.
Kathy

Well you know--one of each!
Willow, as usual, I am in awe of your beautiful gardens.
Summer, maybe your old garden is not all that misses you. Hidden message, maybe?
Aw, he was trying to be nice. I keep asking about it, wistful over all the tomatoes he's harvesting from my deep-compost beds.
Willow, beautiful fallish pics. :) Is Oregon grape prickly? I remember really liking it, but not if it was prickly or not. Looks like birds would feast on it.
Yes they are like holly leaves. But I don't have to go around them often.
Oregon grape is different from mahonia, right?
Beahive, I admire your photo of the Lily avec frog! What a great catch.
Timing is everything, esp with frogs.
Oregon Grape is a type of Mahonia.
I remember it from when I was a kid, but I don't grow it now... Should look into it.
I just borrowed from the library
"Gardening in the Pacific Northwest" by Carol W. Hall & Norman E. Hall.
It is very throough with nice color photos. I have learned so much since yesterday!
ex... It has photos of a Weevil that I had in my hand, and 'let go' because I didn't know what it was. Now I know it was the weevil that chews square chunks out of my Rhodo leaves, and Bores into the stems under the bark, causing BIG trouble. It has had it's Day of Grace, if I catch it again! As my Grandaughter would say, "Boy o Boy Nana".
Some moths lay their larva in the ground, so make sure you aren't seeing that.
Jan, mahonia has a more pliable leaf than holly, but the edges are similarly spiked.
Welcome enyeholt. My Mahonia (if you prefer) just appeared one day. It is the tall kind and in a perfect place so I left it. Glad you have joined us.
I'll look into getting some Mahonia.
Great pics!
I love the Prairie Sun- so pretty!
Hey - I was watching gardening with Cisco yesterday and there's a new Mahonia out - that doesn't have prickly leaves. It's called 'Soft Caress'.

If that is the picture of it, it doesn't even look like a mahonia. huh
Guess it doesn't matter when you are a pretty guy
Yes, Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress'. Tidbit to share at a cocktail party (can't remember the last time I was at a cocktail party. heh heh).
I love, love, love the little froggy frog frog picture. Sharon, do you have the hybrid tea rose Sunset Celebration? I selected it because it was supposed to do well in the PNW (and because it was available). I'm not patient with roses, but this one only pleases me. It just put on another 20 blossoms - no black spot, even in our usual summers. It's a peach color and has a lovely fragrance. I highly recommend it!!
Yes, Kathy. I do have Sunset Celebration. I got it when it was brand new and I was still in love with the magazine. I will admit that, though I like it, it is not in my top ten.
That rose with the frog, by the way, was supposed to be Just Joey, but turned out all wrong. I must admit, though, that mislabeling on roses is not as prevalant as on some other stuff.
Cool. So what are your top 5 hybrid teas? I need something to put in the bed with the Sunset Celebration - preferably fragrant.
Sitting here in my library, with a couple of bright lights on, the front garden is shrouded in night except for an apricot rose that is still glowing somehow.
Never wanted anything to do with roses back in Illinois but am coming around. I inherited maybe half-a-dozen here, pruned them hard when I arrived & already they have rewarded me with a heavy flush of late blooms.
Nobody happens to have the "Tiffany" hybrid tea rose, do they? I really want one. It was my Mom's favorite rose.
Any colour preferences?
sutter's gold: incredibly fragrant; not easy to find - but worth it.
