Garden Pics: Late Summer Beauties!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

C Miniata looks similar to the llavea. I have some from the Flamenco series - did quite well & still going strong. I will take as many cuttings as possible from all the different Cupheas i have. Sheesh - this season is going to come to an end faster than I think!

You're the queen of the dahlias, Tills. :)

I planted the one you gave me front and center in my big bed... so excited to have it. Thank you again! :)

One more shot- not bad for one tiny little plant. Tomatos the size of my fist.

OK Pony - time for details:
Name of this one
flavour
Is the skin tough or tender?
Has the skin cracked?
Grown from seed?
When did you plant outside?

Fist-sized = beefsteak. Apparently, this was the year to grow them, which can be rare.

thank you for all the info you can provide. I'll put it to use next year!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

These are Early Girls. Bought the eensy weensy plant at Walmart back in May, and stuck it in a large-ish container with Tagro potting mix.

I have never liked tomatos, but I ate a piece of the first one off this plant the other day, and it actually tasted pretty good to me. Kind of sweet. Skin seemed tender to me. No cracks or blemshes at all on any of them. There are only 4 that are so big, the rest are smaller.

If this is what homegrown tomatos are like, I may become a fan after all these years of being a tomato-hater. hehe. (I just grew these for Tracy)

Tilly and Pony, gorgeous dahliahs! I used to be a dahliah addict, but as we moved out to the woods and the varmings and slugs are harder to control, my interest has waned. It is nice to see such lovely blooms this time of year though, and I think that I am going to try cuttings off of the ones I have left andn see if I can refurbish my dahliah garden.

Pony, It is very easy to turn a tomato hater into a tomato lover with home grown tomatoes. Add just a splash of salt, and the flavor is unbelievable. I have been picking cherry varieties for a couple of weeks (I am not good about letting them get really ripe as I am a tomato fiend.) My first big ones have ripened over the last week....Sieletz. It is a determinate variety, so doesn't have a lot of fruit, but the flavor reminds me of the heirlooms. Big fruit, super flavorful, tough skin and unfortunately splits fairly easily around the stem...but it is always the first big tomato fruit for me and I will never be without it. Just had one for desert....NUMMMM!

Its like home cooking from Gramma's LOL

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL Tills!

Julie, I'm waiting for these to be ready so I can make your salsa for Tracy. Too bad it's poison for me... LOL!

Next year I'll get more plants and grow lots of tomatos. :)

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Be careful with that idea, I had a bounty my frist year with Early Girl and got squat the next. Its all the dumb weather. LOL

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Aw! Well, I'll just plant in Tagro and hope for the best. hehehe.

Beautiful Dahlias!!!

And super tomato pics Pony......I always do different sizes, I start with cherries, go to early girls......then when I can't stand the wait anymore the beefsteaks are ready. LOL Cherries seem to do good most of the time, beefsteaks aren't doing well at all this year. The upside down one I planted (mid size) is doing really well, has a dozen tomatoes on it right now and we've already picked some. I'll do more of them next year.....no weeding!!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

I've been wondering about those topsy turvy style tomato planters. They work okay, huh?

Eugene, OR

I didn't get a lot of foliage, but lots of tomatoes. I'll try different varieties next time. I liked the idea because I can put them on a post anywhere, has to be a sturdy post though. The spot where I used to grow tomatoes has become shaded by my blue spruce in the late afternoon, so I think I'll try cooler crops there next time and do the bag thing for the tomatoes. My cherries did fine in the bed, so I may leave them, especially because the bushes get so big. And I read somewhere not to do beefsteaks in the bags because they break the stems with the weight. All in all I got more tomatoes off the bag than the others, and we had such an awful season. I see they have some for strawberries now, but they are more expensive. I got last years model at Target for 9.99.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Cool- maybe I'll try that next year. Have to figure out where I'd be able to put them...

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Pony, be careful with the Tagro and tomatoes. The first year we did tagro in the veggie garden I got humoungus size foilage byt not so many tomatoes. The second year was a lot better as the tagro mellowed out a bit. I think there may be LOTS of nitrogen in the tagro.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Yeah? Good to know. I had this plant in the Tagro potting mix, and it did great Maybe it's less hardcore than the stuff you layer on/mix in.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmm... ya know, having Tracy not allowed to drive is turning out to be good- see, I have to take him on all his errands, which usually involves stores that have garden centers. So far, I've gotten 2 Clematis, ("Inspiration") a cute little metal trellis, and a Rose of Sharon ("Minerva") out of this... *grin*

Rarejem and I found that the rainy day was a good for getting an indoor project done! These pickled green beans came out nicely. Earlier in the day Lynn helped us make a couple more batches of our salsa and prepare the beans for canning.

Kinda bittersweet. This is a pic Jack sent of my old garden, left to its own devices.
