Okra Problem?

Arcadia, CA

after the Okra's flowering, the okra never grow bigger and it will turn brown and dried up. I don't know what is the problem and also how much water does it need?

how many okra plants do you have... I am only on my second year trying okra.. and still making adjustments.. but will help look into it if I make it to the farm up the street to ask for you - they have okra every year ant that takes the pressure off me growing it.

I have several plants in different pots. It will flower like the top one in the picture, after the flower drop off, the bud will stay green for one day and then it will turn brown and dry up like the one in the bottom.

I would imagine they are not getting pollinated... do you spray your plants?

What should I use to spray my plants with?

Milford, CT(Zone 6a)

probably shouldn't the firs year I sprayed mine for the bugs and ants crawling up and down the flowers..turns out they helped pollinate it..I did not get many okra that year.

I didn't spray for bugs this year and they should blossom pretty soon.

Not all of my okra flower and I got a whole boat load of okra!! After they flower, the flower turns brown, then falls off, leaving an okra pod behind. The okra is usually just a nub and is easily overlooked.

Here's a good pic of some of the okra growing in my back yard. I missed harvesting for a day and some grew too huge to eat, so they went to the compost pile. I can tell you that not every single okra pod had a flower, but I do get several every day. The ants are eating the aphids which love the young, tender, buds and pods. Just spray them with a strong blast of water or a water/soap mixture.

Steph,
I've got some clear pin-tip eggs laid on the undersides of my okra leaves. They're coming along, considering I just planted them out a month ago. I rubbed off the first eggs I found but, of course, I didn't get 'em all. I noticed the ants, so I'm thinking these are aphid eggs. Should I go ahead and wash them off, or will the ants handle these eggs, or will they eat the aphids right after they hatch?

I have an arsenal of insecticides standing at the ready for this upcoming season, so you just name my poisine.

THX!

I'd just spray 'em with some soapy water if you can't scrape them off.

Thanks, Steph.

OT: Went out at lunch and literally "got the dirt" on Living Earth. It's a nice place. I walked through the mountains there and got down and dirty (my shoes and hands!) examining their horse manure and Rose mix. I'm gonna end up with 1-1/2 to 2 yards of their Rose mix as the base for my raised beds. I'll add my own compost and Black Kow and coffee grinds. The mix looks loose enough for the root crops, and what I examined was moist w/o being heavily compressed and tight.

Now. Power tools I got. I'm gonna need a truck.
