2009 Lily Blooms #12
Thanks Allison!
iT'S NEVER BAD WHEN IT'S THAT GORGEOUS!!!!
Love 'Long ISland' too. I wonder why it was so far behind, possibly your wet summer. Did it get a late start? I would think, depending on how long the leaves have been around, that it may not have as much time to bulk up for next year, but seriously, I might take a late surprise over a bigger bulb ;)
'Long Island' is gorgeous! Love those LO hybrids! I've had lilies brown way too early from botrytis that have returned as though nothing happened, so I could see it returning just fine next year. Seems lilies have some time to store energy even before the blooms arrive? My freakishly late arrival, 'Suncrest', opened. I think there's an ability from the longiflorum genes, that enables some to bloom twice a year. I think it has something to do with a short chill requirement. This theory is from having had florist Easter Lilies bloom again the same summer after planting. Seems longiflorum hybrids have inherited that eagerness to grow and multiply.
Two of my Easter lilies bloomed about two weeks ago, much to my surprise and for the first time ever.
Do share gemini, a lily that blooms twice a year? Haven't heard of that previously.
Thank you geminin and for that info, hope it does return fine next year. Twice a year in Maine would be heavenly!!
Thank you Donna , I think it's very pretty too.
Mags you may be right, it was cold and raining the entire month of June here .(22 out of 30 day I believe it was)
I'll be lucky if the other bud has a chance to open, this is what it looks like here already. Fall is early this year:(
Well, it doesn't happen all that often, but I have this vague memory of the old Crockett's Victory Garden show where he was talking about planting Easter Lilies after the blooms faded. There was a follow up show that summer, showing the Lily blooming again. I was skeptical, but received a bunch of Easter Lilies after the holiday from a flower shop I worked at, and planted them. Sure enough, a couple had new stalks and blooms arise that summer. I think it had something to do with being cool enough after Easter, for long enough, to trigger another cycle? Which is still strange, since they were still green.
Pirl, had yours bloomed already this summer?
Oh, and meant to add, I think the blooming twice thing would be a fluke from forced bulbs, not something that would happen often. ...then, I don't know what's going on with my LA hybrid!
Mine were an Easter gift, Neal, then I planted them outside and they bloomed again. It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
I've a feeling it was your special touch that did it pirl. ^_^
My garden is completely confused. I rescued some asiatic lily bulbs from Sam's Club in February, planted them in pots in my kitchen because they had started to sprout. I planted them outside when weather allowed. Some bloomed inside and some outside. Now many of them are blooming again. I rescued pots of Easter Lilies from church and now they too are blooming. I purchased a bulk lot of 30 Casa Blanca lilies on Ebay at the end of June and now they are blooming. To top it off the 40+ English Delphiniums I winter sowed in January are blooming too. Forecast is for 31 degrees tomorrow night so the show may be over :(
I am wondering what next spring will bring. None of the oriental or ornipet lilies I planted last fall look at all like they are winding down. They are all have green leaves and stems, not a yellow leaf anywhere. I hope they have had enough time to replenish the bulbs.
Lis
My orientpets do not wind down either. They freeze while completely green and show no sign of shutting down. it doesn't seem to hurt anything. However, my orientals do die back, or at least are on their way when frost hits.
