2009 Lily Blooms #12

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

We have 25 mph winds almost daily! I'd consider that a calm day!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I still have one late bloomer, always makes me smile because it blooms in Sept. here.

Thanks pirl!

That's beautiful, pixie! :-)

Love your late blooms also, Todd.

good morning lily people.

Steve, when are you gonna transplant your potted lilies? aren't you loving the early fall? I'm inside paintin' and fixin' but have snuck out to trim things, transplant stuff. Yesterday I found a hanging basket for a song. I luv it when that happens, lol.

Todd,
I LOVE your Acapulco!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wait until Mrs. Tod hears that one!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi Nery,

I will probably wait about another month or so :-) I am loving the cooler weather, by the way :-) This was a horrible suimmer and I am glad it is over! Nice to actually be able to crack the windows instead of runniing the AC while driving to work at 7 am!

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Steve,

We are having a weird summer too, but the ooposite. Cool and rainy - I came home from my run yesterday to fog. It's in the 70's every day. In the morning it's in the 40's! We only got 2 days of 90 degree heat. The result is that everything is incredibly lush. Thanks for the tip to Nery about the lily in pots. I thought I'd take Sorbonne and put it in my mini-fridge. We really liked moving it around and I'd like to be able to do it next year. Or maybe tuck it into the garage with the roses.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Donna, are your roses you keep in the garage through winter some you grow in pots through the growing season? How often do you water them in winter? I've been wanting some tree roses and floribundas for pots, but unsure what would be the best winter care options. I have a basement that stays in the 40s and 50sF during winter where I could keep them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Neal - I have three tree roses and keep them in the garage from mid December to mid March with a drink of water about every three weeks. My error was in buying the Hybrid Tea tree roses. From all I've heard Floribundas are best for tree roses. Most of the year mine look like I must torture them! They're lovely in photos at J & P but not quite as lovely (by a long shot) here in the courtyard. In fact, they're so terrible I won't take a photo of them.

Why not try one and see how well it works for you before you leap into it as I did?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Pirl, it has been reports of so many similar experiences to yours that has kept me from investing in some again. Over the years, I've tried a few a couple of different times and had cruddy results. The HTs I tried were just too strangely shaped- I prefer more of a topiary, standard form. I'd like to have a pair in containers to frame the front porch, and would probably go ahead and get 3, so the 2 that match the best could go together and the third could flank the other entrance. For that use I want a good repeat bloomer with dense growth, something like The Fairy, but I'd prefer a peachy color. The problem I've run into, is the varieties I'm interested in are usually only available on shorter standards, I think I'd like them on 36" trunks.

Sorry to veer off topic here. But I do love my Roses and Lilies together, LOL. The last petals are falling from my last 'Rubrum'. I'm watching some ripening pods out there too. I played around with carrying pollen from one trumpet to another during the season, we'll see what happens.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I wish you luck, Neal. I'll keep on trying to get picture perfect results with mine.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi Neal - just logged back in and saw your question. I have been overwintering my roses in pots in the garage for years - 2 Gruss an Aachen and one Enfant du France. I do the same with mountain hydrangeas, and in fact with any plant in a pot.

I have an unheated garage, so it can get quite cold. I put them on the wall attached to the house - the warmest spot in a garage in which temps can dip well below freezing. For me it's the best spot. I water them, but not much. I mark my calendar for the first of each month, and give each plant about a cup of water (8 ounces works well).

The thing that will kill your rose is the heat/cold cycle. Last winter the temperatures here went up to 60, and then crashed to 20. My roses leafed out, and I lost branches on some, and then I wrapped them in old quilts. Of course they sprang back in spring, but what I learned is that you should wrap them in advance to keep them colder. I just took the world's ugliest quilt and tossed it over the top of Enfant, because it was so tall, and it draped down the sides. For smaller roses, I draped old bath towels over the top and let them cascade down the side.

They came out of winter like champs. Enfant du France this June.

Very nice, Donna.

The one thing that J & P stressed was to protect the joint where the tree portion meets the blooming portion on rose trees. So I protect that first and then wrap the rest of the rose while they spend the winter in the garage.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I agree with you. It's particularly important when roses are grafted onto stock in the manner of tree roses.

I must say, when those babies start to leaf out in the dark garage in spring, I send up a little cheer.

Me, too. All the bright red young leaves does me a world of good.

Hello Moby, I have zipped on over from the Mid-Atlantic Forum to post a few pics of my lilies. Thank you so much for the advice on replanting the bulbs you have saved me a bit of work. Thanks to a DG Co-op last spring I have ventured out into the beautiful world of lilies. I have got to run but will be back with more pic later.

Wonderful! So glad to have you join us, Holly. Beautiful bloom you have there. You'll have to 'show and tell' us about your successes and where your goodies came from.

I posted a thread over in Beginner Flowers if anyone is interested in seeing some more lily photos.

A lot of the lilies I have posted came from Valley K. I'm sure some of you lily fanatics are aware of the problems this family is having, but in case some of you don't know, here are links to threads in the Canadian forum.

Thank you echoes for bringing this to our attention. I had known of the struggles and supported through sales, after reading Ginny's post weeks ago. Hadn't been back to the forum to see exactly what had become of the thread. It is a blessing the generosity that has come of it and I thank you again for sharing the threads with us. Cas is a fighter ;)

Most of these lilies came from Ednie by way of a DG Co-op earlier this year. That pink one that I posted earlier should be Robina.
Here is another one from that Co-op.

A little closer, I'm wondering if this might be Baruta. The Ednie picture looks much more yellow than my picture but the description states " pale lemon yellow with yellow veins". I did mark my lilies it is just a bit hard to tell which naked stalk matches my flower pics now that they are nolonger blooming. I see the leaves of a delph in the pic background and the Baruta is planted near one.

The vendor pics and real life garden pics are frequently a little different. Yours look great. Thanks for sharing your pretties!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I really like 'Baruta', the wavy petal edges gives them a certain grace. And I love the blush of pink on the reverse, seems mine had a touch of that, but not as showy as yours.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I know this sounds nuts but I have a bud on a lily, actually two. Please pray for warm weather so it will open. My Grandaughter planted it last year so I have NO IDEA what it will be. I do however find it peculiar that it is, just now a big bud. Any Idea's why so late or what it might be? Maybe we should have a guessing game! LOL
OK, here's said lily.........

I just need a few more warm days and no more 36 degree nights.

That's a nice surprise, pixie ~ bet it's going to pop any day now. At least you're warmer than we are right now.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

So cool Pixie, Every once in a while I will get an out of season bloom on one of my perennials. Maybe a last fall hurrah! I would think that would be very unusual for Lilies.
I knew that I had a few more lily pics around here just couldn't find them the other day.
Not quite open

Pretty!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I have an odd late bud like that too. It's from a clump of LA hybrids, Suncrest, the rest of which bloomed in June and July. A few days ago I noticed a healthy, green stem poking out the side of the yellowing clump, with a big bud on it. I'm curious if it will have time to open.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

That is a nice one!! I would give anything to have a lily in bloom right now!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It had 2 buds and one opened!! Also found the name tag....DGD took the bag with the name on it and stuck a rock. She then buried it at the base of the plant with a small bit of the bag sticking up. I pulled it up and it said 'Long Island'......was wondering what happend to that one:)

Straight on.....it even smells good!!

Next question.......is this BAD that it's blooming now???
