'Rob's Argyle Sock's' from Goldleaf sent as an infant......with her first blooms.

Gail - very pretty!~ Is there any chance, though, that your Rob's Argyle Socks could be Rob's Blue Socks instead?

South, TX

Great job, Gail. Pretty plants.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Let me go see what i wrote on the plant........be back. It says Rob's Argyle Socks. Let me do some checking on First Class.

thanks, Sally as I am having a great time with the african violets.....something new to me!

Nichole, she is mismarked..............don't know whether she is Blue Socks but she definitely doesn't have a fantasy bloom like Argyle Socks...........will change her name on the pot.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Want to see something outrageous. This plant was labeled 'Stormy Rage' when she came from LLG. I looked very carefully to be sure there was only ONE plant in this pot. Now look at two totally different blooms on her!

I want to find little chippery trail, sounds so pretty

Those blooms really are different! How about that!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, I have never seen this on one plant........I just keep inspecting the plant thinking there have to be two plants somewhere......but i can't find them. The blooms are coming off of the same stem.......??????????

It happens, Gail. It's not common, but it's not super unusual, either. I'm sure it will balance out and start blooming correctly. :o) Or maybe it will sport and be something new!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never had this happen on any african violet I have ever had. They don't even look like the same bloom or color.

http://www.hillgardens.com/african_violets.htm That has some info about it.

This has lots of pictures. http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/593570

Gail - I agree w/RainGazer . . . the plant is still a baby, so it's not . . too far fetched . . . for baby blooms to be a bit different. Let it grow a little, and see how it does . . .

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I called AVSA today to get my FC2 password . . . I'm now uploading updates from September 2008 . . . ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for those sites, Rain..............fun sites...........
Work away, Syrumani!!!

OK............here is a big winner in the Round Robin we had. Viostrep I think put this center cut of a chimera in the box........sorry, Nichole, but I grabbed her in a hurry. Now she has her first bloom and bud. She is Chimera 'Sunny Song' and if she didn't put it in, it had to be Bonnie.

Oh gail what a cute little flower! I don't have any chimeras yet, plan on getting one or two this fall.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

She already is starting to really sucker, but I don't know much about chimeras unless I can get a center cut like I did. Other people start them from suckers...........maybe I need to read up on the subject...........she is still such a baby plant.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Very pretty AV's Gail!

Medford, NJ

Gail, I think you can just pop a sucker off from anywhere on the plant, like you would any violet that suckers. But don't take my word for it!!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

yes that violet is summer song & it is a chimera .it's a pretty thing, not a trailer.
bonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Did you put that in the RR box, Bonnie? She is wonderful.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

yes i did, as i have multiple crowns,
bonnie

Thank you, Bonnie......you certainly made a happy girl out of me!!!!

syrumani, I did move the variegates down to the ends and away on the sides to get them out of the really bright spots...I am thinking it must have more to do with temps. We have the air on all the time, but not really high. I am thinking of moving them when the temps drop to some spots in front of windows, where it will be a little cooler, but not cool enuff to hurt them....one winter I had a few minis on a windowsill and had cracked the window for fresh air during the day, forgot to close it that night, and in the morning had two very dead violets =(

Not sure what else I can do, except maybe try a lower nitrogen fertilizer for the variegated? You will love Green Dragon - I was intrigued when I got it, not a big fan of most white violets, but this one REALLY does have green petals, and the foliage is gorgeous!

Gail, your plants are so pretty, just saw a pic of Dangerous somewhere else, not half as nice as yours!! please save me a leaf or a sucker, that one is so cool with it's pointy, sharp leaves and blood red flowers...very "Goth"

If nothing else I do, my plants are loving the new bulbs in the shop lights, I can't believe all the buds, almost every plant has them now...tomorrow Rob's Heat Wave,Teen Thunder, Little Katherine, Rrav's Irish Elf, and Pixie Blue should be open....

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

jmp--photo's tomorrow, please! Can you put those variegated violets on the bottom shelf? Somtimes that makes the difference.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have only really two fertilizers I use just for african violets. One is a 12-36-14 and the other is a 15-16-17 with extra trace elements added. My other gesneriads get a lot more nitrogen than my violets.

I have grown Green Dragon and she is sooooooooooo nice!

Gail, I picture a world full of all of your X-plants...The African Violets Formerly Known as Gail's....

Phoebe, as of yet, there is no bottom shelf! I have one big plant shelf, which is actually my kitchen island. It has 4 cabinets hanging over it, sort of the whole thing separates the kitchen from part of the living room. The shoplights are hanging under the cabinets. Kind of makes for some tight space for cooking, but who cares. I can eat Cheerios for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and not think twice about it.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Oh right--I remember now you said that before--so ends of the lights it is. Maybe it will be better in the winter. Lots of us have violets that lose their variegation during the sumer months.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Be sweet, jmp or i will post pictures from the past for hours on end.......(just teasing)............might as well..........can't sleep.........

One from the past:
Rob's Cool Fruit

I'm just teasing your too, because of the way you give away your former plants. I have a simple way of getting rid of mine, I just kill them. (Usually not intentionally!)

I have a wee little Cool Fruit...wish it would get bigger fast!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I would order another but they are so variegated that they take forever to bloom.............worth the wait though!!

Medford, NJ

The whole center of my Cool Fruit is white.

Here is Pixie Blue

Rob's Heat Wave
not as pretty as I had thought it would be, and hard to get a clear picture of.

Just love all those gorgeous violets!!
Jmp,as Phoebe said, lots of violets lose some or even all of their variegation in hot weather. When it cools off they go back to normal.

Yer violets look so healthy! What are you feeding them?
Often the first blooms on a violet are disappointing--improves with subsequent bloom cycles.

Medford, NJ

Lynn, I hope so! I love the variegation more than the blooms sometimes!
Here is a better pic of Mini Minx, it really does have shades of pink and blue blended in with the overall purple color. Is this one a trailer? I can't remember...

I love mini-minx too! Not a trailer though.
