Propagation: part X based on my own experience
I am here Dave. No the deck isn't new. We built it about 5 or 6 years ago. And yes we have had some strange weather here this year. It just got thru storming here and I bet we got at least 3 inches in less than an hour. Just below the house we have a valley that divides our land from BILs land and I saw water running thru it for the first time ever since we have been out here and that is close to 15 years.
Me too. I am here but now I must go mow grass between the baby Christmas Trees. Hugs to all.
Are you guys having bee trouble this summer? I'm telling you we can't even go outside the house to water. They chase me back in. Got stung on Saturday and I am allergic to them. I don't know what kind they are but we have traps out all around and get tons of bees in them.
I called the clinic to see about getting new epipens and she said the bees are really bad all over here.
Jeanette
HUH We haven't had much problem with them here. More the stupid flies.and nats.
FF: does your new found stream run by the deck?
Jeanette: my wife is from the upper west. she spent time in montana, washington and oregon. she said there aren't many ac units in homes. and its been in the 90's +++ how are you holding up.
I do hear you on the bee's I am alergic to wasps and other insects. I run from wasps...lol
We don't have real hot weather Dave. Yes, we do have a few weeks in the 90s, but no triple digits. I can stand a few weeks. Especially when you think about our 6 months of winter. Mostly snow.
A lot of people use the window swamp coolers and I am sure the newer homes maybe they put in central air. I suppose I would do that if I were building, but that is not one of the top issues if I were buying right now.
Well, funny that so many gardeners are allergic to bees.... I'm another one.
The ground cover you are talking about sounds like what I'm battling as well. Can't you take a picture and post.
When I get home tomorrow I'll take one of the two kinds that have spread all over my yard and trying to get into my front flower beds, it has already gotten into one trial bed in the back yard.
I'm not a chemical user, I used some this year when the beetles showed up and started eating all my plants, but it did do a thing... Those darn beetle traps that my neighbors put out is what finally drew them away from my beds. Now it is down to a number that I can take off at night... Funny thing, my next door neighbors boy (2 years old) was over helping take the beetles off the plants and putting them in the pan of soapy water.... lol. Love that boy.
See yall tomorrow night, off to bed for me.
Janet
That is funny Janet. Years ago I had a little neighbor girl that used to like to come help me with my plants. I mixed my own potting soil at that time. So whenever her mother would pot up her plants the little girl would tell her, "that's not the way Jeanette does it".
Little kids are fun in the garden aren't they.
Jeanette
No the stream is down in the valley is aways from the house. Thank goodness LOL I'll be gone most of the day today so I' try and get pic later this afternoon and post them,of the stupid stuff trying to taking over here.
We have more honey bees this year than we have had in years. They are not aggressive and great for the blueberries.
I have noticed the butterflies are gettinig up under my shade cloth on the greenhouse and getting stuck and dying. It is breaking my heart but I have no way to get them out of there. Very sad. JB
JB, the strangest thing has been happening out here in Washington State. You know there are bee keepers that have a lot of hives that they rent out. They take them, bees and all, out to the orchards, fields, etc., to pollinate the crops.
Well, this year when they went back to get the hives, the bees had disappeared. Nobody knows where they went. Nothing in the hives.
Then there are the bees we have now, that are not honey bees, I don't know what they are but they are everywhere. One woman who has a cherry orchard about 250 miles from us said that there were so many of them in her orchards that they couldn't pick the fruit. Lost the whole crop.
Jeanette
Killer bees??? I know whe have had a few reports of them in some of the southern counties of oklahoma so they are on there way to us. Maybe the honey bees lost their queen so they went off with another colony? It does sound wierd that the bees are all gone.
Its hot hot hot. yesterday 101 with heat index of 108 today more of the same. I spent about an hour and a half out transplanting seedlings into 3.5" pots managed to do 8 flats. I have to go raid a parkinglot for boxwood cuttings. I think I sold out of the small ones but thats good.
a friend off mine went through back surgery and has the new artifical disc as well as a new plastic hardware. Its a small piece that is covered or swallowed by the bone at the fusion site. One fusion one disc replacement. 2 days in the hospital and now she is feeling a lot better. Little pain ecept for the incission. I thought the other back troubled walking wounded might like to know about this. I was not able to do it because it was in trial stages when I had mine done.
Dave
Jnette: Are they bees or yellow jackets? YJs are mean, nasty things with bad dispositions who will attack just like the killer bees. I have developed an allergy to bees after an attack by YJs 2 years ago when I ended up in the ER and was given morphine for the pain, I was stung so many times. They usually nest in the ground, but this week DH discovered a nest around the garage door and was stung several times himself. We keep Benadryl caps on hand, along with Benadryl cream to relieve the itch and pain.
Hateful little varmints!
Angie
Angie: we use a long distance spray for the airial nests that way we kill them all and can get the nest down to squish it.
sorry to here about your trip to the er. at least its a distant memory.
Dave
Hi Dave & Angie, I don't know if these are killer bees or what. I have seen some YJs but the others seem to be smaller than those. The ones that there are so many of. I don't know. I used an EpiPen the other day and had to get a new one. Gotta get some more Benadryl too. Guess I was fortunate that I only got stung once.
But, they drive me in when I try to water. Went out this morning and did a little mulching and had to quit when it warmed up enough that they were out again. Here we have such long winters and wait for summer then wish it would get cold enough to drive the bees into hybernation. Disgusting.
Jeanette
Dave, what do you mean a long distance spray? An aerosol can? Jeanette
Dave: Thanks for the info. We've used those long-distance sprays on nests we've seen. YJs are prone to ground nesting, though, and when I was stung so badly, I was into the nest before I even knew it was there. In fact, I was weeding and pulled a weed that apparently had grown into their nest. All I knew is I was suddenly covered (and I do mean covered) with YJs, stinging away: my hair, my clothes, everything! I was stripping as I ran screaming into the house, brushing them out of my hair and off my ears. That's how my hands got so badly stung. It must have been exciting for the neighbors, but they were all gone, apparently. Thank goodness DH was here. I had to go out on the back stoop while he swept them off my outer pants with a broom. It could have been much worse for me. I took a Benadryl and by the time I got out of the shower, I had welts all over my body and that's when we rushed to the ER.
Trust me, you do not want to mess with YJs, those horrid creatures!
Angie
Dividing plants...
I was thinking about dividing a plant today. I think it might be good to put some wax or something similar on the cut part of the plant to protect it from fungus, etc. in the soil. I have seen some problems with plants being attacked by fungus or insects in the cut area. Just curious if any of you have tried this before.
Thanks.
EM: I am not familiar with it but its a good idea on plants that are prone to soil borne issues. I am sure there is something out there. I know some people do treat a cut limb with a paint that seals it. I would start there. It works quite well. It brings up a curious question. would anything sprout from the injured area?
Dave
Jeanette: They might be paper wasps. I ran into them in florida. the used to like to nest under neath the fan palm fronds. you would go to clean up and wham they were on you. Nasty little buggers.
Dave
incredible stories that you all have lived through. We have been loaded with honey bees.... my relationship is a love hate.... love what they do for plants, but hate when they sting me as then it is off to the hospital....
If I can ever get home and get back outside before dark I'm gonna take some pictures of some clematis cuttings that I have. Several other garden members and I went to another DG'ers home and she was so kind to let us take cuttings when she was cutting them back.
Some are doing better than others and some might not take.
Question
On some cuttings there is already new growth (2weeks since taking the cutting) does this mean there are roots growing??? I don't want to put them up to see and then maybe kills them, so I'm just letting them be.
I also did a tray of 2 week old vines that looked to still be alive even thought the leaves weren't so I did an experiment, I took them, root toned them, and planted them up just to see if anything happens...LOL
oh well off to try and get this darn newsletter done...
tomorrow folks.
Janet
Janet: You might want to post your query on the Clematis forum, as Clematis Guru can probably answer this question about the cuttings for you. Good luck.
Angie
Janet:
If you lightly tug on the cuttings and there is resistance then you have roots. Are you misting the cuttings at all during the day. When I start cuttings I try to get out a couple of times a day to spray them down to avoid wilt. Also I like to pick up the flat and look at the drain holes sometimes roots will be poking out. Just a few thoughts. Its great you were able to get cuttings from a fellow member so close to you.
Dave
GOT another stupid question LOL. I have oriental lilies and tiger lilies and they have already did all the blooming for this year but they have got little roound things on the leaves down next to the stalks and I need to know if that is the seed or what. It looks like a little brownish purple berry of sorts.
ff, I think what you are describing is the seed. If you left it on until it was ripe you would probably get a new plant went you plant it.
I have never done it, but I know a lot of people do start from seed and that is either the seed or a seed pod with seeds in it. Someone will tell you.
Jeanette
Well I picked these off cause every time I have went back to collect them they are gone LOL Birds or fell off ?
flowerfantasy - Those things fall on the ground and sprout everywhere. I don't know if they are seeds or what. They seem more like small bulbs to me. The Tiger Lilies will spread all over!
HI Everyone, Just thought I would check in. I hope to be back in a couple of weeks. Dave, I will get in touch with you ASAP.
Hope all is well. Linda
I wish I knew. I figure they have something to do with developing new ones but in which way LOL
ff, I would say unless you did a controlled cross pollination, you probably wont know what you have until you get it to bloom. The only bees I know of that are discriminate in their pollinating are honey bees. They will not cross pollinate. My understanding. Butterflies and other bugs and bees can give you new "hybrids". LOL I am not sure, but maybe even honey bees will go from one color daylily to another color. Don't know if they are so picky (discriminating) that they stick to a certain color. Guess we need to get some info from a bee keeper.
Jeanette
Well Dave do have any ideas as to what they are? I really want to know cause if they aren't seed no point of saving them.
I am not shure. It might be the seed pod I am not all that familiar with tigers or orientals. It is an interesting item. I am wondering if mayby its listed on the seed database? I will try to look it up tomorrow. Since the little berries disapear it might be a berry with seeds inside. I would have thought the seed pod would be similar to their cousin the daylily.
Dave
A few species and their cultivars are well known for producing stem bulbils. The Tiger Lilies, L.tigrinum (lancifolium) are well known for their stem or leaf axis bulbils. Bulbils are usually a dark purplish-brown colour may measure about 0.5 inches (1-2 cm). This can vary from variety to variety and stage of development. Some plants have more mature ones at the top others start developing them from the bottom so they are more mature. Mature bulbils will eventually fall off the stem by themselves to the ground. Once they touch the ground they will start to grow roots and pull themselves into the soil.

Thanks echinacemaniac, what you describe it just what these look like. so they will make new lilies then?
Yes. I can't tell you how many times I've had to remove some of these Tiger Lilies. They always have those bulbils still attached to them when I pull them up. LOL.
I wish everything was that easy to multiply. They are very pretty though. I've seen the new double Tiger Lilies and wouldn't mind having some of those, too.
Well since i have gathered them will they be alright to send some to a few people and them grow for them? I had some many to start with I will probably have a galore of them next year then LOL
FF: You just said what I was going to suggest. so many people want tigers to go along with their DL's and iris's you should be able to trade them off for som items you want to have. Just a suggestion.
So how is everyone this lovely am? I managed to plant 4 flats of seeds before the heat chased me back inside. I managed to get about 70 cells of pink pampas grass sown along with a bit of this and that.. maybe a bit more of that than this lol.
Dave
