Well, Emily, you would think WeightWatchers would teach you how to lie effectively at their meetings, because you also lie your butt off. DH says "lying through your teeth." What does that mean?
What expressions (or words) drive you nuts?? - Part 3
that you have wide gaps between your teeth
Hahahahaha! After I wrote that i thought it probably means you're smiling while you're lying, but he does have a gap between two of his teeth!
I never had Mary Janes, thank heaven, I still dislike them & never bought them for out daughters, Kids who had them slid around on the playgrounds & we could beat them when running. 'beat' as in outrun them Victor--I can see the comment coming. I had sharkskin toes on my oxfords as I would go through the toes & proud of it for some reason. 'gym shoes' were canvas & hightops.
I love mary janes. I bet I have a pair or two mary jane inspired shoes. Not this contraption, but a comfortable version.

Lawyered up, doctored up. liquored up----all the same.
no, not the same. at least when "liquored up" you have some fun.
How dreadful to have heels on Mary Janes, but yes they had to be patent leather.
IrisMa - dittos here about beating them on the playground. Neither Mary Janes nor Ringlets are conducive to athletic endeavours. (It certainly did not help her at 4-square or tetherball.) I realized much later that "sensible" shoes are the reason why I don't have foot problems.
Vossner - over 50 & it was always Tennis shoes/tennies. I think it might be a regional term, too.
I work for a very LARGE company & the use of acronyms is ridiculous. This is an acceptable practice in written materials, but somewhere along the line it jumped into the common vocabulary. Cutting off syllables in words: only if one is speaking about plants!!!
I'm soon to be 71 and "Mary Jane " was pot in the 50s - 60s. Marijuana, mexican , latin , spanish for Mary Jane. I think . Play on that . digger
Yes it was called that. But no black patent leather pot...
Was pot or reefer in my day. Sometimes weed.
'You throw like a girl' Nonsense, you throw like you were not taught to do so. My brother is 8 yrs. older than I, so I learned from him. He recalls that he learned how to throw from a friend. I laugh recalling a girl in the class ahead of me could beat boys at any sport. No one told Mary Jo that she couldn't do things correctly.
I think girls shoulders are jointed different . Feel free to check it out and let us know .I cant get into snopes . digger
yes, girls are made different :-)
I got a new pair of Black patent leather Mary Janes every Easter.
Mary Jane, Reefer? Reefer was also what we called a coat that was popular in the late 70's. It was midcalf with wide lapels and one button. Not too good for NYC winters but stylish.
Was this song about Mary Jane?

This one was!

I remember the Rick James one.
Of course we never said 'You throw like a girl.' Occasionally, 'You throw like a differently-jointed person', maybe. ^_^
i do throw like a girl, it's pitiful. I was always the last to be picked when selecting teams.
don't believe it, Victor. Girls throw perfectly well it taught how.
How about both together?
My Jazz Professor introduced our history class to Gertrude Michael
She is something else!
Movie Star from the 1930's, if you are not familiar

Good pianist!
Nice!
Cool. When was that recording made??
I have to agree, Carrie .... superb pianist.
The LP is called "Sky High Zwei - weitere 25 jazzige und bluesige Kiffersongs" von Werner Piepers Musiklabel "Transmitter Klänge". From a series of LPs with songs of the 20's 30's and 40's. (one of my fav. eras of music)
It is such a crisp, clean recording, I wonder if it wasn't recorded at a later date, say in the 50's. I know she died young at 53.
I have a copy of Murder at the Vanities (1934), the movie in which she performs the song, but it is much different where she performs with a gaggle of tijuana guitar players all around her.
I haven't had much luck finding out info on her.

That's exactly why I asked - it sounds way too good to be that old. Great voice too. Maybe she was high?
Liner notes only reference the "musical film" date of 1934.
I don't know why, but it makes me think of some kind of James Bond movie.
I think I recall that Beverly Sills is, er, was a heavy smoker, so I guess anything is possible
Of course one isn't a true "blues" or "jazz" musician until one performs a viper song or two.
^_^
Song by Sam Coslow
&
Arthur Johnston
Pianist, Composer, Musical Director
(1898-1954)
Arthur Johnston was born in New York City and started out professionally playing piano for silent films. He would later become Irving Berlin’s pianist and musical director of stage production. Johnston moved to Hollywood in the late 20’s and initially found success arranging the score for Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights. He went on to contribute to dozens of film scores, often collaborating with Johnny Burke and Sam Coslow, producing such hits as, “Moon Song (That Wasn’t Meant For Me)” (1933), “Cocktails For Two” (1934), “My Old Flame” (1934), “Pennies from Heaven” (1936), “All You Want to Do Is Dance” (1937) and “Song of the South” (1946).
Back to girls' throwing abilities----Joan Joyce---greatest softball pitcher----struck out guys, too.
And the Queen and Her Court.
My father's cousin was one of the few to beat The King and His Court.
Robin
Joyce's pitches were sometimes clocked at more than 116 mph (186 km/h). In exhibition games, she struck out Ted Williams at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, CT in 1961 (also during a brief stint in 1966) and Hank Aaron in 1978

WTG Digger! Puff up that chest HIGH!
Congrats. You should be proud, Digger.
Send me tickets ? He better put me in a box seat .lol . I hope he doesn't go back next year . Anything less than what the team did this year would be a real downer for everyone on the team . He's only eligible one more year and there will be a lot of new boys on the team . As it is , these guys have been playing together for four years and know what to expect from each other . I just want them to take their 15 min of fame and remember it forever . Is that selfish , I hope not ? . Anyway , I'm way off topic .Thanks for all the positive . digger
Digger, ever run into Awesome Bill(from Dawsonville)?
