Nor Hawaii.
What expressions (or words) drive you nuts?? - Part 3
Hawaii is considered 'way out there'. That's where you go for vacation, or as in the case for J-2's sister, get married.
California is also considered 'way out there', but in a different way.
The "lower 48" doesn't include the southernmost state.
Jersey?
LOL
No worries. I just wondered if you guys were having issues with Alaska, Hawaii, Porta Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Did I miss anyone one? Normally Border Guys say 'Welcome to the United States' so I was just wondering. Maybe this dude was from Alaska so was having a bad hair day? You guys are way too much fun about your country BTW ^_^
Don't forget the District of Columbia!
Not counted as a state & hard on the people there as Congress interferes.
Don't forget Guam either. I think that is still US terrritory. Now, I'll have to go and check. I may be embarrassed by my lack of knowledge. :) Oh, wait, that happens all the time. No problemo.
American Somoa?
You want some moa? I think you've had enough already, David!
In the immortal word of Oliver Twist:
"Please sir, can I have samoa?"
LOL!
O wowo I always thought it was "Please sir can I have sambuca". I learn so much from you guys.
I don't like it when people make estimates and say the bigger number first. For example: "There were probably 40 or 35 people there."
That's a good one. I squirm when I hear that. The smaller number should come first.
Also it bothers me when someone says "I borrowed him the money" instead of "I loaned him the money". I hear this a lot on court tv shows.
"As a rule of thumb" confuses me. My thumbs don't have rules.
Mine sure don't, furthermore that picture is nearly 15 years old, back when thumbs did rule the world.
That thumb isn't green though. It couldn't possible rule!
You know where the rule of thumb phrase came from???
According to Canadian folklorist Philip Hiscock, "The real explanation of 'rule of thumb' is that it derives from wood workers... who knew their trade so well they rarely or never fell back on the use of such things as rulers. instead, they would measure things by, for example, the length of their thumbs." Hiscock adds that the phrase came into metaphorical use by the late seventeenth century.
I like a REAL explanation any time!
Whew - good thing they chose the thumb!
Well the rumored explanation was that men couldn't beat their wives with anything thicker than their thumbs.
Hee hee - I'm refraining. ^_^
That's the one I heard also Jen. There would be no criminal charges as long as the weapon of choice was no thicker than a man's thumb.
And there would be no charges if the 'weapon' was bigger, but used properly!
:) !!!
Some men have pretty thick thumbs, though!
Not all prehensile, though??
When did husbands get opposable thumbs??
Some laws in certain states pertained to the thumb and many other body parts...
Check out this thread I found on the jokes and humor forum....
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/420125/
I like this one. It doesnt say anything about indoors.ha!
In New York City, "It is disorderly conduct for one man to greet another on the street by placing the end of his thumb against the tip of his nose, at the same time extending and wiggling the fingers of his hand."
I thought that only kids did that. We all did as children.
Thanks flowerjen. I can relate to that. I measure in dahliafeet so I have a rule of dahliafeet..... testing..... 'My dahlias are propogated by rule of dahliafeet'....'As a rule of dahliafeet, Alvin the chippymonk eats only fresh pine cones'. O ya that works for me.
Getting back to the original question ("what word or phrase irks you") - it's "pop of color", which you hear constantly on HGTV!
Can't help but contribute to the parochial/public school thread, though! We had to wear SADDLE SHOES in parochial high school. In parochial grammar school, when patent leather shoes were so popular, the nuns told us we shouldn't wear them because they were so shiny, they'd reflect our underpants! No wonder I'm repressed, LOLOLOLOL
Good ones! So funny about the shoes - but not surprising.
