I don't have either of those.............I need to tell Syrumani what hers is...........she ordered Franken Tartan Blue and it doesn't look like the pictures...........need to ask her to look at Franken Velvet lady........I have had trouble finding Frankens this year.

Just read your second post..............need to tell Nichole.............

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

(consider her told!)

I will go look at those pix right now.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I think, between the two, that it is closer to F. Vicki . . . but still, not quite . . . It has some similarities to a Bristols strep that gail posted in the July thread . . . I'll go look at more pix. I tried to find the lady I bought it from on ebay, but can't find her to ask what it may be.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh my gosh........I thought I was on a personal dmail with Jim.....have to go back and see what i wrote. (how embarrassing)

The trouble is, as helpful as www.streptocarpus-info.com is, they don't have a picture of every Franken strep . . . maybe that should be my goal . . . must go to the gesneriad website for the "complete" list . . .

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

(considering sending to Jim for closer inspection) . . .

Williston, ND

you know I can get behind that kinda thinking,id be HAPPY to check it out for you lol

JIM

I did find the lady I bought it from. If she can't identify it, then I will gladly pack it up and send it your way!

hahahaha!
Score one for Jim!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is funny Jim and Nichole!

Ask Gail . . . streps don't usually do well for me, and I fell hard for the Franken series . . . for one to actually make it to bloom, I am a bit disappointed that it is not what I expected.

But, with the help of everyone in this forum, I think I may be doing a bit better . . . here is the tray of leaves I made from Jim . . .

In the Round Robin, I received a plantlet of F. Copper Knob - ended up there were 2 of them in there, so I separated them . . . will have to take a picture of it tomorrow.

Wow! That tray looks great! I finally managed to get a few leaves going. I hope I can do a whole tray soon:) Cool!

Syrumani, that is simply amazing! You must have really gotten good leaves from Jim...........do you mind sharing what mix you have those in. I either get too much perlite or not enough peat in the mix...........that looks just perfect!!

Mine eventually get babies but I am using too much perlite..........takes a longer time..........
Lately I am using another mix and the babies are coming much faster..........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks pat and gail. Gail - I just have them in the mix that I get from Boerne. Jim told me that streps like extra perlite, so I put some of the mix in a bowl, and equaled (almost) the mix w/perlite, even though it already has it mixed in. When I seperate and pot up these babies, I will use that extra perlite mix.

Hmmm....I did the same thing on a much smaller scale, but your plants are younger and larger than mine. Did you have them under lights the whole time?
This is Fernwoods Minuette rooted from leaf pieces.

Remembering John--from leaf pieces. This one will prolly outgrow my space--dunno what I was thinking!

Those fernwoods are minis and the babies will be smaller then say a babie from a larger grower, think they look just fine
remembering john gets good size but you can keep them trimmed to fit in your space,so you dont have to get rid of it,but to be on the safe side, you might want to send it my way so i can make sure its not the giant variety lol

Rotflmao! We'll see....I might have a RJ to share w/you if you are good.....

Williston, ND

Oh well had to try,i do have remembering John i think, its a great one to have
but nothing beats comet tails or watermelon wine.they are just breathtaking

JIM

Well, Jim, I can't find a picture of Comet Tails. Would you post a picture of it, please? Watermelon Wine, too, if you've got one handy! LOL

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Ahhhh! Are they perchance mini's? neither pic comes with a description.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't have a picture of Watermelon Wine although I have one and she is magnificent looking.

I have never seen a comet tails........will go look at the strep site or google.......

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

It is listed as Comet Gail--no tails....pretty, but the photo is not that great.

Is Watermelon Wine a big plant, Gail? You know my space issues. I'm hoping it's a smaller one, but I bet not. LOL

phoebe there is an actual 'Comet Tails' that I found reference to, but no picture. There is a 'Comet' on the Strep site, but that's not the one Jim's talking about, I don't think.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't really understand why plant size is an issue. I just keep the leaves trimmed for the space I have. All that does is make the plant produce more baby leaves and one has accomplished two things from just trimming leaves.

David Thompson told me that little trick...........

Jim and I have been discussing that very thing, Gail. I know I can keep them trimmed, I just hate to chop on them all the time. LOL Then I have to figure out something to do with all the leaves. I don't have space to put them all down. Reckon I could find some takers for leaf pieces here? LOL

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

In my experience, that trick works for awhile on the big ones, but eventually the plants deteriorate and look awful. When I grow a plant it is usually b/c I really like it, and want to keep it healthy and looking nice. I do not have a lot of room to keep propagating plants. So I do my best to avoid buying plants I don't have room to grow--I'm not always successful though...might have to send some to Jim--LOL! I will go look up Comet Tails--I know I've seen that one before......

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

"Reckon I could find some takers for leaf pieces here? "

Rain--the problem for us is that no one chops up the mini's! LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I trim the leaves (not sections) .......on every strep I have..........minis, too.................it is simply a good way to grow. Based on what DT was telling me, it also help the plant to keep the buds off of a new one or a baby one until you get the leaves you want so much. The energy will either go into flower production or leaves...........

I just call it proper grooming.........maybe I am wrong.........but I figure David Thompson knows a whole lot more than me. When streps mature to the point that they need to be divided, it is so easy to get out the knife and chop in the center where you can see an obvious crown. I got 8 nice plants from just slicing through Purple Panda who was turning into a 5" pot.

Streps (hate to disagree with you Phoebe) don't eventually turn into ugly plants when they get big and have been trimmed...........or haven't been trimmed.

"Lookie" what I got in the mail today. She is in an almost thimble size cup and her blooms are iridescent looking. I am so thrilled to have her and it was a gift from the vendor.
She is called Baby White..........

That is tiny and so cute!!!

That is precious, Gail! See why I love mini plants so much? Those little ole tiny things just bloomin' their hearts out make me happy!! LOL

I've only got a couple new Strep blooms today.

Strep 'Poochie' I had decided I'd get rid of this one, because in my mind it was very similar to Strep 'Snow Rose', so I thought I'd just keep 'Snow Rose'. Nevermind. I'll just keep them both. LOL

Edited to add: That is *not* pollen on the flower. No thrips here (Yet. They tend to hit in late fall/early winter, but I'm anticipating them this time and intend to totally prevent that attack. I digress.). I knocked over a pot on the shelf above and that's perlite crumbs that I didn't see til I had the picture loaded on the computer.

I don't remember what Snow Rose looks like but I will always adore Poochie and never let her out of my sight................

I am also falling in love with these mini avs..........just can't get any prettier............

Here's Strep 'Snow Rose' for comparison.

And Strep 'Fancy Pants' I don't think this one has ever bloomed for me before. If it has, I don't remember it and was pleasantly surprised to see fantasy! Lovely!

If I had known Snow Rose was that pretty, I wouldn't have gotten rid of her (LOL)
I never even let her bloom thinking she was a plain pink one.
