Tropical Plants: Tropical Garden # 46

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Mine comeback every year, ( Obedient plant) but this year it is slow to get going.. I re- arranged the front garden by the porch.. it faces east and my hubby "trimmed" the trellis rose and honey suckle that my passion vine , coral vine, porcelain vine and morning glorys were trailing on.. doesn't look like anyone got too badly hurt tho.. does anyone know what this is? my sis in law got it as a sympothy gift plant and it was full and really dark and colourful when she got it.. barely in a bit of soil with a lot of curly straw stuff..

obedient plant? very cool. I added to my 'want' list.... :)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I work at a car place, but we went to wally world to get a lite bulb installed, and while we waited the two hours, I walked around and gazed at the tropicals, they had 4 ft white BOPS for 24 dollars, and all kinds of nice tropicals like i see posted here.. I just know I can get them somewhere else for same money .. Rita, thanks for this ..

J'sW - that leafy plant is probably a Calathea, in the Maranta Family...they love moist rich well drained soil, shade and lots of water...

Even the obedient plants are fried here. They look like a flame thrower has been on them. One of my biggest umbrellas was over the Bear's Breeches to no avail. It is mostly dead anyway. The storm turned the umbrella wrong side out. Has been cooler the last two days with some rain. Crossing my fingers.

PK.. there was a storm here a week or so ago.. it also turned my umbrella inside out.. and I knew the storm was coming.. just plain forgot it.. hoping you all get some rain soon.. I am kinda tired of it.. it rains then the sun comes out and scorches evverything.. my voodoo lilly is half fried.. I am giving it away to someone who knows how to care for it.. I don't even know who or where it came from, or how it showed up where it did.. go figure..
My second brug bloom this year, this is from Suavleons Pink, but it is more salmon colour I think.. two more blooms to go on her so far.. sorry about the personal picture.. I was so Kacited over this one.. I grew it from a stump log thing.. in my basement all winter..
I could use some more Obedient plant seeds if anyone wants to trade something..

Lili, be careful when you wish for obedient plants. LOL

Carol, thanks for reminding me that marantas like shade. I keep meaning to move one that is getting too much sun.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

LouC, nobody treats they Bear's Breechs worse than I, and they return. it will likely come back in the fall

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

yes, I am careful about planting those invasive plants.

Aloha Hoya, just saw that you guys pay $200 for electric. Thats a bargain. Here in New York (specifically Yonkers) I pay $717 a month to Con Edison, and thats on a budget (a level billing plan) Talk about ripoffs!!!

remind me never to move to New York...

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Man, i could get an apartment here for less than that with utilities (elec., water, sewer, cable, internet, phone) the works and still have enough to pay a maid ha ha ha ha

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Frata...WOW. Do you have gold air conditioners and heaters?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

This time last year when oil and gas was out the roof, I had two months in a row over $800. Used the same amount this year and it is $369.

Texas has the highest rates and most of the power comes from here by way of natural gas. Go figure.

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow, and I was complaining about $280 when I left the hot tub on for a week!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I know..I'll stop complaining for at least a week now! lol
Did someone say obediant plant!?

For some reason a hot tub in Florida sounds a little strange :)

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Not at all for me, perfect during the winter when my pool is too cold and when you have a rough day at work or you have been stressing out... The hot tub loosens up all those muscles.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL...I have a hot tub too, and it is nice during the winter.. It is also nice during the summer...unheated!

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Some nights it isn't bad at all after it has rained and cooled down a bit. I can't stay in long but enough to get me relaxed and calm.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

And if you pull a muscle in the garden, simply step into the hot tub on high...aaaaahh..feel the bubbles!

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Exactly, and since mine is by my pool, i can look around and enjoy my garden!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I noticed everyone in Florida has a pool and a hot tub in a screened in porch....

Red Oak, TX

I will start a new thread # 47

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yeah...I am jealous of those guys in Florida!!!!!

We don't have a hot tub but our pool is around 90 degrees this time of year so that works ^_^

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

My pool has so much volume that even now it is just barely warm enough to swim in. The good thing is, once it does warm up, it will stay that way till February so it makes a good heat source for the plants around the pool.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Just now warm enough to swim in? Winter Haven must live up to it's name.

Around here the pools, even the large public ones, are almost too hot to swim in during the summer. Our daily rains have kept the temps more reasonable this year but they are still in the 85 -90 degree range.

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Well trust me! it is around 100 Degrees here, i guess the screen room breaks up the sun just enough to keep the temperatures down.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

That's probably it. My kids have a large pool and lanai in JAX and they have to use a heater early in the season but now it is hot, hot, hot there.

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

wow, I am about 4 hours south of there. It must be the screen room. Well this will be my first winter with plants around the pool so I am going to watch them closely to see how they fare. If it is still a little too cold i am going to install a heater to keep the water warmer during the winter.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You are inland and it is always a bit cooler inland. Orlando experiences more cold weather than I do up here on the SC coast.

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes i understand, actually where i grew up is the highest point in peninsular florida. The Lake Wales Ridge was once the only piece of land poking up above the water. We could always just dig in our back yards and find sharks teeth. Weird huh. If you look on the Zone map, lake wales is a little spot of 9B amongst all of the 9A.
