What have you ordered for 2009 - Part 9

South Hamilton, MA

Dwarf peony 'Squirt' just arrived from Klem's Song Sparrow. It was ordered last spring & planting time is now.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

If have and luv 'Blue Hobbit'. How tall does Squirt get irisMA?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i made a pretty big purchase yesterday - these fall sales!! - a large 5' jm katsura, dwarf montgomery blue spruce, and several jap. grasses that i split up in 3's and potted and planted so the roots can grow over the winter.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Another JM????

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes - and i counted what i have in the yard, 48 different ones not including doubles and the bakers dozen of babies :)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

When will you be selling to the public?? ;)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

if there is space they stay :)

South Hamilton, MA

Squirt is advertised at 16" (a rock garden peony). It came with 9 eyes, although the packing says 3-5. I think it waill be a hit.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Cute! I would like to get some dwarf ones for the umbrella bed (when it's built). Great stock with that many eyes!

Thomaston, CT

I've planted tulips---that's it! The peony sounds nice, & ready to blom next year---Bill---there must be great nurseries near you---no sales here.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yeah - mahoney's had the dwarf spuce on sale for 60% off and they got me at 30% off for the jm - hard to pass up as i had ordered one from rarefind and they had run out - considering the frieght charges this was the same price for 3x the tree.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My seeds ar the typ that go in the ground as soon as its warm enough.
Starting in the house is a drag and they get leggy and never transplant well.
I might start Brandywein Toms inside.
These get direct sown in May
Morning Glory "Grandpa Ott"
Zinnia "Art Deco Mix"
SunFlowers "Double Dandy"
Cosmos "Red Crest"
Cosmos "Gazebo White"
Any one know of a dwarf white Cosmos?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Be careful with Granpa Ott. He likes to reseed ALL over!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ut oh I have a Grandpa Ott now, guess I should deadhead it.
Ge I think I've seen a shorter variety white cosmo for sale in the past, from either Park's or Swallowtail Seeds.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the headsup guys.

Thomaston, CT

I never thought of direct seeding the zinnias---will give it a try, Jo Ann.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ge I had to go out so I didn't have time to check until now but I found the one I saw at Park's http://www.parkseed.com/gardening/PD/0613/

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for going to all the trouble. I checked out both Parks Seeds and Swallowtail and they have bad reputattions.
Customer relations and service are but a few of the complaints.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I noticed that before I ordered from them too, but I think it is more of an issue with Park's if you are buying things besides seeds. I would never order plants or bulbs from them. I've had good experiences with both of them for seeds. If you order early enough you don't have to worry about not getting stuff in time. It seems more when I wait until peak ordering season that I find things are a bit slower to get sent out. Right now is definitely not peak so they should get them right out to you. I usually find around April is when it takes longer. I want to check Diane's seeds for you, I think she might of had some at one time too. She gets your seeds to you within a few days and charges very reasonable for shipping.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I buy seeds from Parks a lot... plants well they are hit or miss.. but always make good on the ones that don't make it

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I realized I usually keep pretty good details about all my orders and seed starting results. Here is a link to my Park's seed order. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/Meredith79/72473/ If you view each entry there are links to seed starting info and my experience with them. Just looking over my list quickly, I know that everything I ordered from them had very good germination. And most of them have bloomed and been true. The only one I think I haven't had bloom is Monarda and they always takes two years for me. When I read the comments that say things about poor germination I tend to take it with a grain of salt. Partly due to knowing how much one needs to know and do to be successful with seeds. Ex. One comment says "All the seedlings died shortly after germinating" I think " Dampening Off" I could point out a million comments that I could give a reason for why it could be human error and not poor seeds. I'm sure you know what I am talking about because I am pretty sure I've seen you posting here in spring about all your seed starting efforts.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Sorry Onewish I cross posted with you. : )

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think there seeds are good

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Wow I really like it Wha!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - great size.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx - happy now that rarefind was out - it is a nice one - need to find a good place for it in the spring

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am always open to any good news and will look into Parks again as I saw some nice annuals there.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

shoot I always buy the dollar seeds and don't have a problem

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I've used swallowtail many times and have never had a problem. Great germination rate too.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I got a bunch of zinnias from swallowtail... they were all good

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Where did you get it, Bill? I forgot.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

locally - well 45 minutes away at Mahoney's Garden Center where i got the Shirazz - had to drop off some furniture for my daughter close by so it worked out well. Good quality and wide variety although typically expensive unless you hit a sale. i go there to see what some of my trees will look like when the grow up,

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Allison and Venu
I went to Swallowtail and bought Zinnias and Cosmos.
They also have a great selection within the variety.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have had excellent germination rates with Parks seed however I find them a little chinzy on quantities compared to some of the other suppliers I use. ge Gazebo White comes in dwarf too. I'll keep my eye open for it and other short ones in the CA 2010 catalogues and you can piggy back on my order if you like.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I have to agree that they are usually smaller quantities than most seed suppliers. But if they have something no one else has I usually will pick out enough stuff for the shipping charge to be worth while.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Me too Meredith. There is always something I MUST HAVE in their seed catalogue.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This was a free pack of Morning Glory seeds.
Its still climbing.
The bloom circled is not the top

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I hear ya, sometimes they have cool stuff Dahlianut : )

Ge I love those blue morning glories. Do you save the seeds?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

No seed saving, they will reseed where they drop to the ground for the winter
