Coffee Break # 15 - Where were you??

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the links.
In my time in Key West, hanball & racketball were both played on courts that had a front wall and about a third of a wall on either side. It really changed the strategy for racketball I don't think I've seen courts like it anywhere else.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Dave
A third of a wall on either side would make it really interesting. I'm trying to picture that.

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I hated Dodge ball.
In fact, I hated any game where something was thrown/hit towards me.
That included Ping-Pong!
In gym class we had softball sessions. HATED IT!
There I was, bat in hand. I had a great stance! One of my teachers even complimented me on it! I felt like Mickey Mantle standing there.
Then.... the pitch! Down I went. The teacher thought I was hit by the ball.
Second try - no good. I ended up BEHIND the catcher!
Poor teacher gave up on me, but she complimented my ducking abilities & speed.
LOL!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

when i was growing up games went by the season's.
spring was stick ball with one of those little souvenir bats and a tennis ball the distance of two light polls - i was undefeated my whole life in this game!
summer brought more stick ball and a Frisbee game where two people squared off and fired it at each other - catch it take a step closer - miss it you lose - even had to catch them sliding hard on the street - lots of split finger nails - loved that game - also played relievio (sp) if we included the girls
fall brought football and street hockey
winter was pond hockey and street hockey - and if there was no one around i would spend hours firing tennis balls at my neighbors rock wall, has to shoot accurately at specific flat rocks or the ball would carcome off at and odd angle and go down the road. made for a very accurate wrist shot

Jacks and jump rope.

South Hamilton, MA

Here we go: 50 all scatter (hide & seek) every night after dinner., jacks, jump rope, marbles (with a hole, not a circle) pom pom pull away. We had to put a limit of 3 times it in a row, or someone would be it all night for 50 a. scatter. Scrubs ( soft ball) you advanced to bat by position. polo (on our bikes with a wooden block as a ball or it would roll too far down the street. Street football. All this included everyone on the block, except for jacks & jumprope , no boys. We lived in the Milwaukee suburbs.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I was a ace jacks player. Onsies, twosies, threesies, etc.

I hated dodgeball, Nancy, I agree with you there!

I kept switching schools, and the sports changed just as fast. One year it was kickball with a big round bouncy ball, the next year it was field hockey and lacrosse with equipment and uniforms and rules I had never heard of!!

South Hamilton, MA

Re jacks--middle daughter went to a camp where they had tournaments after dinner--knows all the different categories (including 'baby no-talk' where you play without comments.) difficult, as girls like to yak.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Um I think I might have made a teensyweensy error in judgement. Remember Peppy Le Peu? Well I have been leaving some treats (apples and carrots) out at night for Peppy. Last night I noticed that one of my moss phlox has been ripped up and a piece was at the back corner of the garden shed. There's a hole under the back wall of the garden shed and it smells like Peppy back there. I think it would be ok for Peppy to live there but what if Peppy is Peppermint and there are skunk babies? Anyhoo I'm going to put a newspaper crumple down the hole and loosely cover it with dirt to see if Peppy digs out tonight. There is only a skinny space between the shed and the pee fence so cross your fingers and toes that I don't come face to face with Peppy cuz I won't be able to run. I'm going to sing loudly to let Peppy know I'm there and hopefully he will stay in the hole. ps I think it's WAY cool to have a skunk but shhhhhh DH won't think so

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

They have descented pet skunks, Dahlia.

I forgot to say that we own the entire Rocky and Bullwinkle Show on VCR or DVD. Lots of fun! It was one of my first birthday gifts to my husband.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool memories! We played every sport too - I was just referring to the 'non-standard' games.

Some of my greatest memories involve playing in the fire hydrant in the summer. Even the adults got in on the action. It was so cool. I distinctly remember playing in it one night and going upstairs to use the bathroom. As I came out of the bathroom my parents told me the president (Nixon) was quitting the next day. They may as well have told me the weather report from Boise. Didn't register one bit!

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

LOL! Dahlianut! Unless you're walking around the area in the evening you probably won't see Peppy. Smell, yes.
It wouldn't bother me since I like the smell. LOL!
Whenever I come home in the evening I jingle my keys when walking from the car to my door, especially if there's a familiar odor in the air.
Skunks will usually move away from the sound. They don't go around looking for a confrontation.

There was a skunk family - Mom & 2 babies - that had a nest under the walkway near my front door. My neighbor got the brunt of it. His door is at right angles to mine. The tunnel to the nest went under his house. He couldn't figure out why his coat closet always had a faint smell of skunk. I pointed out the hole.
He's an animal lover so he put up with it until they moved out. He did the newspaper thing too. When it wasn't disturbed for a week, he sealed the hole. He said he'd rather smell skunk than smell dead skunk!

I like skunks! Anything that eats slugs is OK in my book!
LOL!

We played 7-up( involved a ball and the wall of the house, irisMA hated that one) kick the can( a version of hide and seek), and tennis in the street with my sisters. We lived out in the country.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We did kick the can too. And spin the bottle!

South Hamilton, MA

Thump, thump of the ball against the house is not pleasant!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh Victor, now I know I'm older than you. I remember how tense that summer was .... trying to find a VP ... "I am not a crook" ... watching him in B & W ... huge font on the morning paper the day he resigned. I didn't completely comprehend the future implications, but I sure understood.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Gab I'm hoping to get Peppy to move before there are babies otherwise the crazy ole cat will get sprayed for sure. I have finished my list called 'Peppy's Big Move' and I'll keep you posted on how things go. I'm gonna rent a scuba suit to wear in case Peppy gets upset. I'll get DH to take pics.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we also had a version of spin the bottle with some teenage girls a few years older than us although it more like touch football - if they touched you they could kiss you - i think back to some of the open field moves i made not to get touched, i was the fastest kid in the neighborhood and never let them catch me - looking back i was just plain STUPID!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Dahlia--good luck on getting rid of Peppy. I want to see the pics!

gabagoo- Is that really a pet skunk! Does he bite?

Victor! Now you did it! The Fire Hydrant! No use asking nice if you could pass thru the block with your groceries, convertible top down, new shoes, just washed car, whatever.. The answer was always; Sure! wink, wink. Nobody got away dry. I never learned how to control the water with the can. Did you?

Jumper--7up was fun too.
wha--not stupid, probably virginal :-)

Remember those clapping games with the rhymes? Miss Mary Mac.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - sounds like you were on my block, Joyce! Speaking of top downs - that was the time of tube tops!! ^_^

Remember clip-clops? Not sure of the spelling. And Poprocks - the candy that exploded in your mouth!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Oohh, pop rocks were cool, I think they still make them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Really??! I would think one lawsuit would have killed them.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't think they were the same as before- less pop, but I didn't know there had been a law suit.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I know they banded them for a while, at least here in Maine .

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

I waas too shy to wear tube tops and too young to fill one, but I remember Hot Pants.

Were clip clops those clanging balls on a string that clacked together and drove the teachers crazy?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think in NYC too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - that was them, Joyce. I remember hot pants too - they were before the return of tube tops!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

How did I know you would remember those :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I vaguely remember the song too.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

That was a horny man song!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - isn't that redundant?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

heehee

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

I guess....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we called those clip-clops... kerbangers ... I had many many bruises from them

http://www.retroland.com/pages/retropedia/toys/item/6204/

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ah - Click-clacks!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That's what I was going to say.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I bet my mother still has a few sets of those in the basement

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Probably can find them on eBay.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Yes, Jadajoy, I remember those clapping songs, the jump rope ones too.

How bout footsies? At least, I think that's what it was called. The thing where you slipped one foot through a ring, there was a rope/string attached to the ring, and you had to swing it around with the one foot and jump over it with the other. I think that was the name, but who knows. It was an awfully long time ago.
