Coffee Break # 15 - Where were you??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The only reason we will return is to take the natural resources.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Possible, David (David). My pregnant mother and I were distracted by the TC show.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Hi
Hope yawl don't mind me posting around here. Your forum is very interesting.

I was at summer camp (in NY) and it rained the whole month supposedly because of the flight.
When I got home my dad said it wasnt because of the space flight because that was filmed in Hollywood. To this day I don't know what to believe.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not at all, Joyce! You are always welcome. Please feel free to post anywhere on the forum, anytime.

They really landed - believe me! Check out space.com. They have photos from the spacecraft orbiting the moon right now showing the landing sites and the old lunar modules, as well as footprints.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Thanks!

I'll check out that site.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

I don't remember.... I was 6, and I don't think I knew what was going on at the time! I'm sure my family must have watched it, but I have no memory of it.

Sad. I remember Underdog, and Moose and Squirrel, but no moon landing.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I remember them well too. And Courageous Cat, Magilla Gorilla, Gigantor, Mighty Mouse and so many more.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Deputy Dog, Speed Racer, Yogi Bear, Felix the Cat.....

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I was 17 & remember it well. Very exciting!
Just heard on the news that Walter Cronkite passed away at age 92.
He was the anchorman we watched during the moon landing.
I remember him being as excited as we were.

I also remember him breaking the sad news of JFK's assination on Nov 22, 1963.

Nancy

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Very sad. He was a giant and a very decent man. Did you know that the news was only 15 minutes before Walter? That he was the most trusted person in the U.S.?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I agree Dave47 about Walter. Jadajoy I see you and raise you Snagglepuss, Huckleberry Hound Dog; and Heckel and Jecel. ps what about Boo Boo?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Sh##t......Walter was a newscaster before there were talking heads, ie..he really knew what he was talking about. I watched the lunar landing on a B&W TV . I always know the date as it's the same as my Mom's birthdate (that would be month and day but not the same year) It's funny though, that some things are for public display and awe, but other things that have changed our lives we never really saw. Such as how many people observed the first microchip being born :)

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

re: cartoons...
Who here remembers the "Farmer Brown" cartoons from the 50's?
It always ended with him being run out of his house by a bazillion mice.

Nancy

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Walter Cronkite's picture should be in the dictionary under newscaster. He was it! An era is gone.

dahlianut--you got me :-)

This was one of my favorites:

Deputy Droopalong, Penelope Pitstop, Simon Bar Sinister...

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I just heard that in some (northern?) European countries anews anchor is called a Cronkite! Cool

Ricochet Rabbit, The Jetsons, Looney Tunes and, of corse, the mouse

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I was 14 & yes I can remember what I was up to but I cannot expound on it here. Let's just say it was memorable.

And oh no - cartoons! I am a cartoon head, so I will remind Dnut about Quick Draw McGraw, Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy, my all-time hero Woody Woodpecker ( I used to drink my Mom's coffee when she wasn't looking & pretend to be Woody, but I never could get my head to drill into wood as quickly as he was able. Huh?). Early warner bros (Looneytoons) contributed to my warped sense of humour, and I could not understand why Pluto was just a dog, but Goofy walked upright & talked. He owes Pluto bigtime!
Dep Droopalong? Victor - regional cartoon?
Heckel & Jeckel - but of course.
Who remembers Beany & Cecil?
I was immersed in the cartoons from the 40's when every inanimate object came to life: enjoying exhuberant revelry when the humans weren't around. To this day I sneak back to the kitchen window to see if the dishes are partying with the pots & pans... Occasionally, there are telltale signs.

Walter Cronkite and the Lunar landing

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I'm somewhere in that crowd of people cheering the astronauts as they rode by in the motorcade.
I bought a flag that day from a street vendor. It cost $1. I still have it.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Wow Gabagoo! Your memories are on tape :-) Have you told your children and shown them the flag? Must have been awesome. I was struck by Cronkites' reaction. What a moment in history.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

I remember standing out in my back yard on a warm night in Southern California, squinting up at the luminescent half-moon---and thinking, "you better be ready for some visitors in weird outfits!"

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

LOl!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

We always watched Cronkite and all the space stuff. He will be missed. 92 is pretty good.

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I don't have any kids but I have showed it to some people who visit and look at my collection of "stuff".

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

gabagoo- I bet that flag would go for a small fortune on ebay right about now (just kidding) :-) I don't have kids either, just too much "stuff" .

Oh Katye, you too? I too thought they came to life when noone was around so I always put my toys together according to who might get along well with who. Chrissy with the pull out pony tail seemed to like playing with the etch-a-sketch and being sourrounded by all those GI Joe soldiers.( My dad wanted boys and got three girls first and just bought us Tonkas and footballs and boy toys anyway. I think they were really for him :-)

I remember Beany and Cecil. I had a blow up plastic one I played with in the tub. . Do you remember Mr. Magoo?

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I doubt the flag is worth anything except to me.
There's nothing on it that says anything about moon landings, space, etc. It's just a flag.

When I explain where/when I got it, kids just look at me with saucer eyes.
HAH!
I know what they're thinking!!

"Gee, Miss Nancy! You're OLD!!!!"

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

:-))

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Mr. Magoo - absolutely. And now i feel like him when I can't find my glasses!
I am envious about your Cecil bath toy! I adored him - he was such a goof. But a Heroic Goof!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I wasn't even the glint in my parents' eyes yet...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Loved all the shows mentioned. My favorite was Bugs Bunny.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

but of course, Victor: a great way to learn the double entendre!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - he was one of my wiseguy influences.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Mine as well. and very non p.c...

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

To me Bugs was second only to Rocky & Bullwinkle (Not so much for them but for Fractured FairyTales and Peabody's Improbable History.

I remember Beanie & Cecil!

How about all the wonderful more regional shows that were hosted by humans and played a cartoon or 2 during the shoe: Sandy Becker, Sonny Fox (who my Dad called Funny Sox) and, infamously, Soupy Sales

Nancy, That's great being a part of history. were you from the City? I just spent the weekend in Brooklyn.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm not allowed to go to the city for a few weeks yet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Brooklyn doesn't count as part of the city.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

You're A Bronx guy, right?

I don't think Manhattan is too fond of any of the other Burroughs. But all sections seem to reserve a special scorn for Staten Island (and of course Jersey

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Queens. Wife is from the 'the' borough.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I would have loved to experience baseball in Brooklyn in its heyday. Games were cheap, 3 great teams in the city, Jackie Robinson,..
