how to keep crows away?

Delhi, LA

This stuff is more dangerous than a claymore. Something eats it they die, something eats their carcass they die and so on. This is one poison that needed to be outlawed. Nope, even an old chemical freak like me would not use this stuff. Jail, might not be to bad though, 2 meals a day, can't make you work, free cable vision and someone to play cards with. Has possibilities at my age. Oh yeah, they have to pay medical expenses. Sure would miss talking with you guys so guess I'll stay straight.

We get a lot of crows when we have a lot of Hummingbirds - then, sadly, we don't have many Hummingbirds... I suppose it is the balance of nature - but they are very destructive.

(Zone 7a)

Now I know what it is. I wouldn't use it, either.

Delhi, LA

Starts with a T. Is that what you are thinking of kwajin?

Westerly, RI

TNT

Delhi, LA

nope it is a poison.

(Zone 7a)

That's the one, Jim. It's been outlawed for awhile, hasn't it? Or, at least, banned in many places.

Keaau, HI

So what is the suggested T-Toxin?

Delhi, LA

Hey Dave did you ever go completely blank. I could have told you the name of that poison if I wasn't trying to think of it. A senior moment I guess. Just had another birthday. Yep, kwanjin, it has been banned for several years. Farmers in our area used it primarily when they planted corn to keep the slugs and cutworms from ruining their stand. What got it banned was the blackbirds would pull up the corn and eat the seed that was still attached with in seconds the bird would be dead. They whinned for a while but when they realized that if something ate the bird it would die and continue on through the food chain, they got over it quickly. Temick is what keeps running through my brain. Oh well, if that's not right I'll wake up about 3 a.m. and remember.

(Zone 7a)

Tetramine is what I was thinking of.

Delhi, LA

That's it. Temick might have been a brand name. Glad that stuff is gone.

(Zone 7a)

Me, too. Nasty stuff. Now, you won't wake at 3a.m!! LOL

Delhi, LA

Thanks kwajin. I've had the wide eye for the past several nights anyway. Always been a night owl but the last several nights it has been 2 or 3 before I could get sleepy. I'm one of these that have to be asleep in about 10 secs. after I hit the bed or I have to get up.

(Zone 7a)

I always spend at least an hour up in the middle of the night. Sometimes more. If didn't need a flashlight to see my gardens, I'd be pulling weeds at 3am. LOL

Delhi, LA

When I was younger it I got 4 hours of sleep I up and rarin to go. When my eyes opened I was wide a wake. Now can't sleep late because i'm so darn stiff from laying and takes me at least an hour to get limbered up. Gosh, don't suppose I'm getting old. My mind still feels young but the bod tells the true story. I can still out work most of the young dudes I know.

(Zone 7a)

LOL I feel the same way in the AM. Gotta work those kinks out. Thank goodness I can sleep in a little.

Keaau, HI

Temick is a systemic plant toxin that enters the roots and kills bugs by them eating the plant.
I could imagine how it could be toxic to mammals through accumulation; It enters an environment and doesn't go away. The animal could feed on an area till the toxin causes the critters liver and/or kidneys to fail.
Or the toxin could be spread on a bait (kill) so the varmint gets a lethal dose quickly.

It was made illegal on the mainland US first; in the early 90's we were still using it for greenhouse production at the University of Hawai'i. Once Temick was in the plant, nothing would touch it (except humans!).

Delhi, LA

All my friends think I'm nuts because I like hot weather. It just doesn't get to hot for me. Once I get outside and start working in my yard or garden I can go great guns. Come in the house around noon for a snack and coffee and sit for awhile the limbering process has to start all over. O well, I know some guys younger than me that can't get out and do anything. I'd go nuts if I got like that.

(Zone 7a)

That's new info for me, Dave. Thanks, my "something new" for today.

Jim, a snack sounds good right about now. If I don't get off here, I'LL have to re-stretch everything again. ^_^

Delhi, LA

Sounds like you've had some hands on experience with the stuff. I never used it. It came out after I quit farming and went into the ministry. I did see it used by a friend who was losing 3 or 4 baby calves every night to coyotes. Laced a half eaten carcass with it. Stunk to high heaven. I didn't think anything would come back and feed on that calf because of the odor. The next morning there were 12 dead coyotes in a hundred yards. Like I said before, once its in the food chain it just keeps on killing.

I've got to try to get to bed early tonight if I can. Going to preach at the first church I ever preached in. Haven't been back in 27 years. Really looking forward to it. I can still remember that first sermon and the scripture reference after all these years. Going to preach the same sermon again.

Keaau, HI

Hey Jim, I wonder what a bunch of farmers with an outlawed pesticide and coyote problems are going to do with these products.
If a farmer has predatory animal problems and calls the local Ag Extension Service, how soon do they get help?

Delhi, LA

Like never. A total waste of time. This guy was a rancher and he died last year. Don't think he ever used it again after he found out what it would do. Know a couple of guy that might still have a little but they won't ever use it. Probably don't know what to do with it. I guess they could call the EPA but doubt they want to answer questions about what they are still doing with it. They might even have disposed of it some way. Hadn't thought of that stuff in years until somehow I got off on it in this thread.

(Zone 5b)

that stuff sounds evil....anyway, I was WONDERING where the hummingbirds were! It didn't occur to me the huge black crows ate them! Last year they were at my front door, this year I haven't seen ONE. When I get my backyard landscaped I'm putting in shrubs for them to hide in.....will that work? More stuff for me to research.

Westerly, RI

I drove by a farm yesterday, they had inflatable eagles, plowing in the wind. I dont know if it works tho

Westerly, RI

My dad swairs by rice. well atleat for squirls and such, there no reason it wouldnt work on crows tho. After they eat it and drink it expands and the animal pops

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Scarecrows do not work - not male or female. The mesh covering the copper in the background does keep the crows out of the tomato section of the vegetable garden.

As for crows on the patio - what are they finding there that makes it so attractive to them?

(Zone 5b)

iluvcatz if they popped over my yard I'd never go outside! lol

I think one of the problems with crows is that they are really intelligent - I remember, when I was a child our cat got himself into trouble with some crows who were 'dive-bombing' him trying to kill him - my sister and I were really upset, but afraid to venture out into the melee - now the reason that we had the cat was everything to do with my sister and I, and nothing to do with our father who was not a cat lover.... unfortunately for him he was the one recruited to go out and rescue the cat - I will never forget the sight of those crows trying to get my father running up the lane with a terrified cat in his arms - poor Dad!....

I am not a crow lover, but I am a bird lover, so it is really hard for me to draw the line and try uncooked rice - if they weren't so prolific it wouldn't be such a problem. We have had rodent problems too, and I feel the same way about them - However I have to admit that it beats poison (but still seems yuckky).

I should say that we live in the countryside, and generally don't have a huge problem with either crows or rodents (mice, pocket gophers...).

So why is it that there are so many crows around homes? - what do we do that attracts them? - my guess is poor garbage containment - how to stop that when it is happening in other peoples yards, or at the local park or wherever?- attracts both crows and pigeons and they overrun the place.

I wonder if just bringing the hammock in for a few days would allow the crows to forget that it is there.... then try leaving it out again for a few days. They may be just bored and looking for something to do.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I think the crows are too smart and would continue to watch the property. It's the bird seed that they come after here and it deprives the small birds so I have to sit at the table (not a bad idea) while the smaller birds eat. As soon as I leave the crows swoop down to feast so I can only put a small amount of feed out at any time.

(Zone 7a)

I have to jump in and say the rice thing doesn't work. Rice doesn't swell that much. Not enough to make anything pop, anyway.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Agrees with kwanjin
We give our chickens rice at times and we have yet to have one pop.......LOL

Delhi, LA

You guys are right, rice is not going hurt a crow or any other type bird. Grits on a fire ant bed will work. Don't know how but it does. Crows will eat about anything but they are primarily carrion eaters. In Caldwell Parish where I pastored for so many years, you see them everywhere. Usually eating road kill. Hardly any buzzards there. They are either super smart or super wary, don't know which.

Westerly, RI

my dad says it would but if you have seen it you must know

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

We only have the crows around now because of the mulberry trees. They seem to like those berries for some reason. They can have the top ones, but then better not touch my bottom ones, or the gun will come out. And my BF doesn't call me Annie Oakley for no reason ;-)

Now I'll tell you why he called me that.
He had a chipmunk show up near the chicken coop, and we know what it was there for. It wanted the chickens food.
My BF got out his .22 and took aim and fired, and missed. The little chipmunk sat there as still as could be. He went in the house and got another bullet and loaded the gun and fired again, and missed. By then I think the chipmunk was starting to laugh at him. He want in and got another bullet and took aim and missed again. I think the chipmunk was probably dying from laughter at this point, but still didn't move. I had been watching my BF each time he shot and after he missed the THIRD time, I asked him if I could try.
He got another bullet and loaded the gun and handed it to me.
On the first shot, the chipmunk either died of a heart attack, or I got him. :)
The look on my BF's face was priceless. I handed him back the gun and said "you didn't know you were seeing someone who could shoot a gun, did you?" His reply was "OK Annie Oakley".

He hasn't lived that one down yet. He has 2 Trophies in hand gun competition, and I out shot him with a .22
I loved his reason for why he didn't get it though. It was iron sights, and he always uses a scope. I had news for him. That was my FIRST time with iron sights.........he he he he

Sorry guys, I just had to put that one in :)

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

iluvcatz, think about it.....
How many times have people had rice thrown at them outside a church after a wedding? And we know that rice goes somewhere. Like the birds come and eat it when everyone is gone.
They stopped using real rice now due to it being a fall hazard for humans. Too easy to slip on rice on a sidewalk. Now it's a fake rice, more like a candy rice and it melts away when it rains and it crushes if you step on it. We still have some here from my son's wedding.

Alas, bed time for me :(

Delhi, LA

One morning my dad heard his chickens going crazy. He jumped out of bed and grabbed his shot gun loaded with double ought buck shot. When he stepped out side dogs took off in every directions. Didn't get the first shot. Then low and behold he saw one standing dead still just inside the shed. He raised up and cut down on the sucker but the dog didn't fall. He shot it two more times and there it stood. At this point he decided he had better go get his glasses as well as some more shells. When he got back outside with his glasses on he discovered the big dog was his riding lawnmower and he had just shot the seat off.

Westerly, RI

why do you never see a crow dead on the side of the road??

Because they sit on the electrical wires saying CAARRR CAARRR!!!

(Zone 5b)

Jim that story is hysterical.......

Cute joke iluvcatz, kids enjoyed it!

Delhi, LA

Thanks for the compliment on the story. My early life didn't so funny when I was growing up, but as I remember some of the things that took place, I had a high ole time. All with out booze and drugs.
