how to keep crows away?

Waconia, MN

We have some crows that have been frequenting our back patio area in the early mornings and they are plucking away at our hammock. Can you give me some ideas of how to get rid of them. Also, this is the first year that I have planted sunflowers in the back, and I'm assuming they will be coming all the more once the flower heads start forming....so any advice would be appreciated!

Keaau, HI

Maybe one of these certified varmint chasers would help!

I wish I had a magic answer. Can you just take it down for a couple of days and see if they just go away. Good luck

Waconia, MN

love the dog pic! :-)

Yes, we could take the hammock down when we're not using it, but it is convenient just to leave it up always.

But if you take it down just for a few days they might forget about it and not come back.

Keaau, HI

Is that kitty asleep on the job?

Westerly, RI

no, he's just fat!! Peanut(my 25 pound cat) always blinks when I take his picture

New Milford, CT

My DH whistles at 'em in an imitation of a hawk's cry ... works every time, but I don't know if this is an easily learned skill!

Westerly, RI

my greatgrandfather shot one(a crow) and hung it up as a warning to all the other theves. I think thats over doing it tho

Perhaps a visit from the friendly Smith and Wesson clan would help ?

(Zone 5b)

we have tons of crows here, they haven't damaged anything but I don't like them, there are so many they remind me of 'The Birds' (Alfred Hitchcock) We have hawks too but I have seen 2 crows go after one hawk, attack the hawk in flight...it just doesn't seem right. If anybody knows a way to decrease their population, I'd love to hear it!

Spring Hill, FL

Did you ever hear of a scarecrow? Why do think they call them that? It isn't because they scare away bugs.
Good Luck I really don't know what else to say.

Keaau, HI

I hang old CD's up around the garden to keep birds away. The reflection scares them.

Or tin pie pans work too Dave.

We have crows right now too, but the think that is bringing them to us now is our Mulberries. They can have the top ones. I can't reach them anyway.

iluvcatz, that cat would have to go on a diet before it would hunt for food.....LOL...........Been there, have a 20 pounder, who likes to play with live mice if he can find them. Doesn't kill them, just plays with them :-|

Westerly, RI

you can have her. she kills birds and brings them in the house. She already got 2 crows (I dont grow vedgies) and a bunch of other smaller birds

Mine aren't allowed outside, but my oldest one is always trying to find a way to get out. He use to be out when we lived in the country. Don't trust him being outside in town, or rather don't trust the traffic.

Oops, the younger one was out, on my BF's fenced in patio playing with the branch of catnip that he picked for her. But that is as far as she is allowed to go.

Westerly, RI

she's my neighbors cat. They dont have time for her so I feed her. I have 3 indoor cats so she stays outside. I dont need any fleas or ticks in the house.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

awwwww, they don't have time for her? awwwww :(

There are my 3 :)
Ok, now that we hijacked the thread, back to crows :)

Westerly, RI

LOL, mine are pals, but not too aften do I get all of them in one picture. The fat one was almost 20 pounds at last vet visit last year. He said he could prorbably drop down to 15 pounds and he would be ok............Try and tell Simba that. He likes his food, even if it is weight control (see how well it's working?)...LOL
Seems I read on some sites that 10 pounds was considered a large cat......what is Simba then? Hmmmm.
Had to get extra large kitty littler boxes for him, he was to big for the other ones. Son offered to find out what they use for the Lions at the zoo.........LOL

Yes CrabgrassCentrl, I like my tricolor blanket of felines.. All where rescue cats :)

Westerly, RI

my vet told me that he is happy and healthy but if he gains any more weight we might have to look in to thyroid tests.

My fuzzy butt snoors and has cateracts

LOL, I have see Simba in that postion.

Careful on the thyroid problem though How old is the cat?

BF has an older cat that has not only kidney problems but over active thyroid. She is getting so skinny, I'm afraid he won't have her through the year :(

These pups like to chase birds. I have taught them to leave chickens alone though.

Good Dave, because we have chickens :)
They aren't very good about chasing birds away though. But don't let a mouse cross their path!

he's around 5. This is his baby pic. Peanus (that's his name) is the runt of the litter. When I got him he was really sic and was barley 1 pound. The vet jokes saying he has the "clifford" gene

Mine was the baby of a wild farm cat, so I had to take him at a very young age to get him. I'm sure he didn't weight much when I got him. We think he might have been 4 weeks old or less. I had to bottle feed him until he could eat on his own.
We waited to name him until a personality came out.
He got named Simba, and Trust me, he lives up to the name!
This was him as a baby. I wish I had taken pictures when we first got him :)

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Simba was raised on what is called Tigers Milk..........you can find it in the store in the pet section.

On Crows - take some white sewing thread and run it around your yard or patio and walaa. Crows be gone. Think it is a trap. Know a lady that strings it around her garden to keep the Crows away. Don't have those buggers where I live now. I know something that will get rid of them permanently but if they catch you, you go to jail for a long time.

Westerly, RI

lol. I know someone in another thread that can use this info. I will shaire it with her. thanks jim

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Hmmmmm Jim, now you wouldn't be talking about a gun would you?
Hmmmmmmmm

Delhi, LA

No Maam Miss Kassy. Shucks, all us red-necks got them thangs. Chilluns down here cut there teeth on them. This what I'm talking about is baaaad stuff. Outlawed the stuff worse than Jessie James. Some of us good ole boys know where there is a stash or two but we ain't talking. Even I'm afraid of this stuff and I ain't afraid of nuthin. Once saw 12 dead coyotes in a hundred yards that had previos been feasting on the carcas of a calf they had killed the night before. Baaad!!!!! Stuff!!!!!!!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Well don't go to jail Jim.
But we do have some coyotes around my BF's place that you can take care of if you want to. ;-)

Keaau, HI

Whoa Jim! Sounds like someone is hunting varmints with claymore mines!

(Zone 7a)

Or dynamite. Definitely go to jail for either.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL
