Edibles - '09 - Part3

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

DonnieBrook, do you have plants started or do you direct sow?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, those are gorgeous, Dahlia!! Really loverly!! I did zebra tomatoes in Fla. last winter...I like how they look. Have you ever tried Cherokee Purples? I did those too. My neighbor always gives me seedlings of the exotics she decides to try....but I really like the good old standbys when it comes to taste.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dyane - I direct sow my green beans here and in Fla. where I grow about 12 per pot. Here, I plant about 3 short rows at a time, and then plant another 3 rows about every 2 weeks, at least through July. I am due to get out there tomorrow and plant another few rows. I usually plant Provider and Jade.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I haven't tried Cherokee Purples YET DonnieB. I fell madly in luv with Black Cherry last year but I killed them this year cuz silly me tried to seed them in the greenhouse instead of the indoor grow op. Big mistake; too hot and the seeds dried out. I will put Cherokee Purple in the Great Book of Lists for next year cuz you recommend them.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the tips. I may try and plant a few if I can find seeds.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dahlia - If you're into the "different-looking" varieties, CP is fun, and it has a nice flavor too. Oh, BTW, did I tell you that I am growing some dwarf dahlias at my potting shed this summer? I'll get a shot of them....they are very cheery!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

If you can't find them, I can send you a few. I don't have a huge number left, but I always have some to share if you want some! Each plant gives quite a number. I plant them very close together (about 3 inches apart) and never thin them. I dig a trench and throw in some really rich compost, a bit of milorganite and then the seeds and lightly cover them with fine soil. Presto! Some water and sun, and that's all there is to it!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

DonnieB we welcome all to Dahliaholics Anonymous ^_^ Hope you will post pics!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you so much for the offer. After you named the varieties, I looked them up online and placed an order! I was excited to get them in time to plant a late crop. How tall and wide do the beans get?

Does anyone know if I can start Beets this late?

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I just got notice that my seed order is being shipped. Fast turnaround!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dahlia - I will definitely post pics. I was not in that area of the yard today or I would have seen what I could catch then. Tomorrow is hopeful, but I am going to watch my almost-100-year-old friend and "sharp-as-a-tack" garden mentor be honored in a parade as the oldest citizen in town. Oh please let me have 1/3 of her marbles even in my 80s!!!

Wow, Dyane - that WAS quick! My bean plants get about 18 inches tall and about a foot wide. Because I plant them close together, they get all intermingled in the row. The beans themselves are around maybe 8 inches long. You will be pleased to see how easy they are to grow, and how delicious the beans are.

Thomaston, CT

Beets are cool weather crops, but this summer is so cool, you might get the beets, but you will get beet greens.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I found one tomato that was rotting on the bottom(still green). I pulled it off. Hopefully everthing else will rippen just fine.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

So here's the latest. I planted the first round of Bush Beans (Jade and Provider) tonight. I also planted Chioggia Beets (the striped ones). I plan on putting in another group in 3 weeks. Thank you to all of you for your help and suggestions, I'll keep you posted on my progress.

The pickling Cucumbers are growing so well right now. I picked my first 10 on Monday.

Tuesday I made a small batch of Bread & Butters. They came out great! I haven't made pickles since I was a kid helping out my mother in the kitchen.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - how do I order?!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

dayne i am jealous - you and willie are really far along.

here i think i can pick some bush beans today and surprise the bride at dinner - t-plants now have some fruit - cukes are starting up the trellis and have flowers, still small though - baby summer squashes have started as have most of the others - basil/peppers/eggplant are still small although showing signs of a growth spurt - and we have all the rhubarb in the world with the two plants we have.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I only have flowers for cukes right now. Wow, you are so much farther along in the growing season!!
I do have Blueberries starting though!!

Your funny, Victor. Swing on by for a jar or two! I just looked outside and there are quite a few cukes on the vines again. Looks like I'll have to make quite a few batches of pickles!

Bill, I know things around here got off to a slow start due to the weather but now that it's finally warmed up it seems like everything is growing twice as fast.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

celeste thx for the reminder - i'll have to check my blueberries - its been a week since i last looked - i will say thier are more blueberries than ever.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, they seem to have loved all this rain and cool weather!

Thomaston, CT

Yes, our son's blueberry farm has 5,000 bushes, & only a few pickers---I'm going up on Sat. to get a few pails & make blueberry jam, blueberry pie, etc. Dyane, love the pickles---my cukes are just starting---however, must make some dilly beans, as the beans are coming in too fast!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dyane - I spent a large chunk of my childhood going to the beach at Bayville. Not too far from you.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor, we were over that way in May. It's very pretty. I just moved to Long Island a few years ago so I'm still getting to know my way around. We stopped at a beach on Mother's Day weekend after visiting a Japanese Botanical Garden in Mill Neck. I think it was either Bayville or maybe Lattingtown. It was right next to the Creek Club golf course. It's very pretty out that way.

Here's my oldest digging for rocks and shells...

Have you been to Planting Fields??

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I love Planting Fields. I try to get there a few times a year.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We used to go quite often. We were members.

I swear this is the last year for a veggie garden. Nothing seems right. The tomatoe plants are kicking the bucket still. I think 9 are totally pulled now - BLIGHT. Some of the summer squash and zukes are deformed, I almost want to call them gords - geesh. Plus there is no new flowers, so no new harvest. My peas have all died. One of 2 broccoli's is turning yellow and its not any bigger then a tennis ball. Cauliflower I dont even dare to look. The only thing that is taking off is cukes and beets. I have only had to water the entire veggie garden 6 times all summer.

I have not been here in a couple of weeks? Miss me? Good so now your listening to me complain ! :-)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, actually I did miss you and was thinking of you today as a matter of fact! lol
Sorry everything going bad, it's this darn weather, cold and rain, and more rain!!

Thomaston, CT

Sherrie, I watered the garden once! Right now it's totally saturated! You have a little cutie there, Dyane.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, robindog. She's a sweetheart.

schickenlady, sounds terrible what's been going on in your garden. I wouldn't give up on the veggie garden, I think this years crazy weather has done a number on a lot of plants.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, this is a freaky year and very tough on all edibles.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sherrie relax - this has had freaky weather and there is still lots of time for the garden to rally

i picked a ton of bush beans today - two full cans to can and enough for dinner - as well as sweet pea's

so sorry Sherrie... hope things turn better

Wow Bill ! quote: two full cars to can and enough for dinner - of beans and peas! Where you going to store them?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they were matchbox cars :) jeez and the r is not even close to the n on the key board :)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sherrie sorry to hear about your veggies after all the hard work you did. Blueberry growers watch out for Yogi. He luvvvvs blueberries. I think wha has enough space to grow carloads of beans so I believed him ^_^

I have a question about red runner beans. Mine keep flowering and flowering but I don't see any beans forming. What's with that? Definitely getting pollinated as my garden is very beefull.
