Edibles - '09 - Part3

Thomaston, CT

I vowed never to plant pole beans again---but they are very pretty---hope they are tasty, too.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Caribe and Butte ... figured they were something different... can't wait to see what we get

Wha - ty you are right. I have been doing what I can. In the end I see the devil = death for ` Good Grief 80% of the tomatoe plants now. I guess you can say: I HAVE A DISEASE!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh. That's awful, Sherrie.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez, im so sorry Sherrie, thats alot.

Hi folks, I'm haven't posted here before. This year a friend of mine dropped off 8 tomato plants at my house even though I told her that I was only growing flowers. Well, I couldn't let them go to waste...the new flower bed in my front lawn became their new home. I figured if they could do it at the White House then I could have a vegetable bed in my front lawn. At first I was a little worried about what the neighbors would say. It turns out that almost all my neighbors have stopped by to say that they love the idea. So, the tomatoes needed friends. Next thing that went in was 10 Cucumber plants for pickles. Basil, Oregano, Rosemary and Sage followed. Next year, I'm planning on adding even more.

Here's a pic of the new bed before.

In went the tomatoes along with a couple of Peonies and some Cannas planted on the street side as a camoflague.

Cucumbers even made there way into the flower beds in front of the house.

Here is my first Cucumber. Even though it is pickler, it tasted delicious sprinkled with a little salt.

sorry, I'm just a little happy about my Cucumber!

dayne i jealous about your cuke - the critters have been eating my plants as soon as they came up - finally have some plants going although they are a long ways to bearing cukes - and i'm on my second to last jar of pickles i made last year, a crisis situation for me!! i've gone through 5 or 6 jars so far this spring/summer.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

That's a shame, Bill. Do you have a good recipe to share? Bread and Butter?

Here's what it looks like now. Please excuse the weeds, I haven't had the energy lately to get out there and take care of them.
The Cannas didn't exactly act as the screen I was hoping for. Too much rain and cloudy days this year I think. I added Cosmos and Petunias. Next year more veggies.

So what's the opinion on front lawn veggie gardens?

another cuke

I like the idea. My front lawn is too close to the sidewalk for me to trust there would be anything left for me.(human critters)

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

That could be an issue. My street is a dead end so the only people driving or walking here are usually the people that live on the street. A gardener nearby that lives on a main road told me that he has his berry bushes and fruit trees picked bare two years in a row so he moved the berry bushes to his back yard. He had hundreds of plants. It's too bad because he would allow people that asked to come and take what they liked.

Lee Ann wrote a great article about veggies in the flower bed, fruits in the veggie bed and so on.

I think front yard veggies is a wonderful idea and your bed looks wonderful Dyane. I'm going to put in some of the bigger herb plants in the front when we riiippp out the driveway. wha a friend gives me pickles and antipasta in trade for fresh herbs. Do you have something to trade til you can make more? Maybe a small wall?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

dayne i am a dill pickle person only - these were pickled with garlic and hot peppers - not too spicy, just a nice kick. I kinda winged the recipe not knowing how much dill to use. got lucky - i could give you ballpark ingredients if you want - i'd have to do some digging which i will need to do anyway - hopefully!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Those sound good too! I love pickles.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Love your combo flowers and veggies Dyane!
I had potatoes, green beans, carrots and onions from the garden for dinner tonight, they were great.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I mix herbs in the front with my flowers.

Ok. I know I'm the constant defender of our adorable deer, BUT.....for the first time, the very large Mom of the three cavorting babies has stepped OVER my fence and made herself at home in my veggie garden....see.....

...and now there's not much left of my nice little broccoli patch except the onions that were planted in between them.......

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO......now I mean business! Have you ever seen a tackier fence weaving than this one I crafted at the top of the garden????

Thumbnail by DonnieBrook
Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

And while I'm resorting to tacky means.......these un-original creatures are currently guarding the lower garden where Mom stepped right over my black wrought iron fence......let's see if the green beans that are flowering are gone tomorrow. (If she shops at the Christmas Tree shop, she'll catch on to the ploy right away!!!) LOL

oh so sorry Louise... and I had the same scarecrows!!.. mine molded up and I threw them away

Thomaston, CT

Like the veggies in the flower bed, Dyane----I put flowers in my veggie bed. Sorry about the deer, Louise---clever aren't they?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Bummer Louise! I like your weaving job.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I like the idea of veggies in the front.

So sad, Louise.

Thomaston, CT

The storm last night knocked down my pole beans---actually snapped some supports---must repair!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I can't say I'm terribly upset about it. I really do love having the deer around, even if it cost me a few broccoli plants. If I can keep them out, that's great though. In all the years I've had a garden here, they've never come into my garden, possibly because of all the ground blueberries and strawberries in our meadow. I wish I could have captured the antics of the 3 babies as they were playing chase around the meadow. It was so cute. On the positive side, I had just picked the last of the big heads of broccoli, so I was just waiting for the side shoots. We'll see if my attitude changes if I lose all of my green beans! LOL

I think that looks pretty slick Donnie B. I have zebras

My one and only pea plant is looking pretty sad sigh. I think it is too hot there.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I like the dragonflies on the trellis. Sad for the pea.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have to re-think peas jumper2. Most of my full sun spots are taken up with um er well Dahlias. Peas are too tall for my herb bed. Dayne I think I'm going to go with your idea and grow them in the front when that new bed goes.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm planning on added beans and peas to the front of the house next year.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dyane - there's still time to do bush green beans this summer. They don't take long. I do several plantings all summer.

Dahlia - those are nice-looking tomatoes! Mine are just in the flower stage after all the rain and cool temps here. My whole garden is looking pretty scrawny, but the sunny days should help. Peas don't do well for me unless I get them started in the early spring when the temps are still very cool. I didn't do any snow peas this year....only broccoli as a cool crop.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My toms are in the greenhouse as you know DonnieB so I get a jumpstart. That's my problem cool spot with sun. I do have prettiful sweet peas right now though ^_^
