Cool Lookin Bug
Leaf hopper. Ready for this? Bet you can't say it fast 3 times. I had trouble saying it once. GRAPHOCEPHALA COCCINA QUADRIVITTATA.
"GRAPHOCEPHALA COCCINA QUADRIVITTATA"
is that a Mexican dish? Have i eaten this insect before?? :P
i dont suppose he's beneficial?
No, It's not! This little guy was just featured on a show that we have here in Nebraska called Backyard Farmer - it is run by the University of Nebraska and has a panel of experts that answer these types of questions, here is a copy of what they said and a photo of the bug. I also found this on one of my hibiscus plants, they must be abundant this year!
1. This is a colorful insect that this viewer found in their yard in Lincoln, NE. They are wondering what it is, and whether in fact this is a good guy or bad guy.
a. It's called either a candy-striped leafhopper or red striped leafhopper and one of our very strange ones. It’s attracted to a number of different kinds of plants including blackberry. They are hardly ever numerous enough to cause damage. It's one of those that are large enough that children and adults can look at in the garden and landscape. They are susceptible to carbaryl if you see nymphs. I don't think there's going to be a need.
Prettiest bug I've ever seen.
I wouldn't mind the bugs in my yard so much if they all looked like that.
Isn't it amazing that the patriotic little bugger showed up on the 4th of July.
