Pandurata 2009

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, She sets 100's of blooms, then she busy's herself opening
them all like she's on a timer. lol Opened her first on June 23rd. If she blooms till Aug 15, that will be great. She opened more than a week earlier than last yr. Maybe the bigger she gets, the longer
she can bloom.

Jackie - That's pretty cool about your Pandurata! I have a Brug that produces bloom flushes and then rests for a bit. I have noticed other MG cultivars and species doing that massive bloom flush and then it's gone until next year! (sigh)

Your blooms sure are awesome! I am glad you are getting lots of photos to remember it by! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky. Yes this one has the massive flush and then
it's time to wait for the seeds. It's so pretty that I don't mind.
Great to have this one blooming in my life for 6 to 8 weeks

A pandurata from today. A real treat to wake up to these everyday.

Jackie - Those are really puttin on a show for ya! Do they always bloom like this for you or is this the first year they've spread along the fence and bloomed like this?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I had good coverage last yr, it's first yr to bloom, but nothing like
I;m getting this yr. Even the side shoots, the ones I can still pick out (see) are making buds. Hoping they will extend it's blooming time.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I posted on my thread we found fields of pandorata here in kansas the other day, i brought home some root tubers and some pods on a vine, but we are going back in a couple three weeks for dried seeds.. guess I won't need any pandurata after all.. they sure are purty!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, I saw your post with the nice pics of pandurata. Hope you get
tons of seeds. If you don't for any reason, just lmknow. I can still
send you some seeds in the fall.

Jackie

Pandurata and Youjiro.
It has set buds on the auxilliary shoots so hoping for extended
bloom time.

wow love the pics

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Marie. Don't see a single seed pod yet
but it did the same thing last yr. Slow to make seeds.
Might be the end of this month before seed pods start forming.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

well the pods on the yellow are still green so no hurry. been constant rain this week so no sun. but they are there and they orange ones are finally starting seed pods too. that thing bloomed like crazy. i wonder if i could mix the two in pollination and see what i get.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Marie, You could try to cross them but if they're 2 different species, probably won't work.
Someone else could help you with this better than I.

Jackie, those are just awsome.. love the colours together.. just awsome!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Debra.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Nice photo of your blooms together! A picture says a thousand words! I enjoy growing different species and cultivars together, too. Come seed collecting time, it can be a bit of a challenge though. You were smart. The seeds on your two vines look totally different from each other. Easy to separate them after collecting the pods. :-)

I am getting smarter over time. I've now figured out that I should plant I. nils that have a different color of seeds. I still didn't do that with all my vines this year. :-( But one section I did. I have a vine with dark brown seeds and a vine with lighter tan seeds growing together. I just collect up all the pods, break em open, and sort them out by light pile and dark pile! LOL!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, the pandurata seed pod is different. Nothing I grow looks
anything like it. So no problem knowing which is which.
Maybe next season you could do a special thread for us showing
your blooms from the light or dark seeds. Some of us know but
I doubt if the new members are aware of this .I would enjoy a refresher too. lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I could do that, Jackie.

Mainly I was referring to the fact that when I grow out more than one in a container along the back fence, it's hard to figure out what seed pod goes to which plant because these vines wind up growing together in dense mass of vines. In one fence section I have Kawaru and Keiryu growing together. Both are blue blooms. But the darker blue is Kawaru and has light tan seeds. The lighter blue bloom ironically has the darker brown seeds. So when I collect all the seeds, I can figure out right away which seed came from which vine and store them with the correct cultivar name.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, well that sounds easy, sorting by color. lol

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Still getting blooms on the pandurata. The secondary stems are
blooming, extending the bloom time. 7 weeks so far and I think it will
bloom for another week at least.

beautiful!.. hope to go out and get some seeds from the ones I saw here in Kansas... they changed my schedule to no days off except sunday now so who knows...

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, slowly gathering seed pods here. 10 seeds gathered so far.
I'm still hopeful for lots more. I will plan on putting some of these back for you.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks, don't save too many, I seem to have a good germination percentage so far ... I will find out by friday if I can go out for one last day out on a tuesday off. Bonnie is expecting me to meet up with her..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ok, will just wait to hear from you. :-)

Is pandurata a perennial vine?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Joseph, It is a perennial. I don't know how far north it is hardy.
Just know it is hardy here in zone 7.
Debra says she has found it growing there in Kansas,
What zone are you Debra?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Joseph,

I will be happy to send you some of my seeds.
I am thinking this MG will be hardy for you.

Emma

Here are some of my blooms from this morning

Thanks, Jackie and Emma! I may have seeds of this species in my expandable accordian file of vine seed gems. Most likely from either or both of you!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I am in Zone 6 I think.... the vines I found are north and east of me here. About 200 miles. Havn't found any south and East yet, but then I havn't gone out looking this month yet.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

200 miles is quite a drive Debra. The offer will stand so that you
dont have to drive that far. Just keep me posted.

Winamac, IN

hi, I just acquired one of these beautiful plants out of a nearby ditch, I haven't seen them anywhere in the past 2 years - that is when I got my first one. We pulled it up, transplanted it in our yard, and it didn't come back the following year (last year) so we thought we lost it. When we seen it in the ditch this evening, we took the chance at digging it up and bringing it home and found the old one with two blooms on it! Yay! Does anyone know why this plant is getting rarer and rarer in the wild? Last year when we thought we lost our original vine, we went back to the spot where we got it - there were several vines there at the time, and we found none. What is going on? Worse winters? Late frosts? Any ideas?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Maybe everyone is digging them up?! LOL! JK.

I don't see them here. Other wild MGs, but they are very aggressive growing. The Pandurata is much better behaved! :-)

Winamac, IN

lol, yes, we see tons of the 'bindweed' - pretty if u have a soft spot for MG's but a pain in the butt if u ever find even ONE in your yard! I have a few I try to keep under control, but I have alot of other MGs that have reseeded themselves, and when they are all coming up, its impossible to tell which ones are invasive and which ones are volunteers. On the digging note, I couldn't imagine someone seeing this beautiful plant and NOT wanting to dig it up! Lol! Believe me, there was tons left behind .......... just in case the one I got doesn't make it next year......... tee hee..... ;)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

They are definitely getting harder to find. Possibly someone had
already dug the vines up and took them home. We know they're hardy
to zone 6 so doubt if a cold winter got them. What zone are you there?
Jackie

Winamac, IN

zone 5- ours made it through last year.....do they reseed or do the plants themselves live? I am thinking the plant made it unless of course it WAS there last year and we didn't notice because it didn't bloom.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

My plant itself is coming back from the roots/tuber underground.
I gathered every seed it produced last yr which wasn't many, 13.
It takes 3 yrs here from seedling to bloom so probably you
didn't notice it last yr, just foliage. Next yr, your vine should leap.
I do see a virus on my leaves this year. Next yr I will
spray a fungicide early on as new growth starts.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

This morning's blooms.
So happy it's still blooming.l

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

me too!

Gautier, MS

Very pretty Jackie!! I'm looking forward to growing it next year.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Debra and Helena.
I hope we have lots of members growing this next yr so we can increase our seed supply. While I'm very happy with the blooms, the seed production leaves a lot to be desired. I will send out all the new sds except for 4 or 5 for neighbors and friends here.
