Pandurata 2009

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I've been crazy about this vine since it first bloomed last summer. I'm hoping
for lots more seeds to share by late summer/early fall. Even though it has 5 growing points/stems, it has not taken over the fence

It's a nice species and apparently getting more rare in the wild even though it's a 'weed'

Wish it was a weed in my garden..

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Pretty Jackie!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

RSman, Perhaps "getting more rare in the wild" translates to it's not being nearly
as invasive as some would have us believe.
If I can figure out how to ship overseas can send you a few sds in the fall. I'm
sending Count Drac to Colin if I harvest sds so good reason for me to finally learn how to do this.
Thanks Ronnie

I have this one - I've moved it umpteen times over the years. My late husband found the plant while on a hike and gifted it to me - it is just so pretty. Mine just finished blooming a week ago. I have always grown mine in a big pot, but since moving to NW Florida, I have it growing in the ground.

its on the rare list here in sc know of a few plants in the wild but they keep getting fewer and fewer each year.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

That's lovely Kay. So much prettier when there are several open
at the same time.
Your's also appears to be mild mannered and well behaved.

Jackie - Your Pandurata is absolutely lovely, as is Kay's!!! How big are the blooms? They look quite large.

Someone (it might have been you), shared a few seeds with me last year. How easy are they to germinate? I've had an impossible time germinating the "wild" MGs. I still can't get any of the wild yellow ones to germinate. I've tried two years in a row. Outside in pots, outside in the ground, and inside this past winter in pots in my window. Nothing. Zip. :-(

Did you grow yours from seed or acquire it as a plant?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes - it just has the one main stem.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I got mine as a plant with a tiny tuber/potato. The potato has gotten larger over the years.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks for your reply to my question, Kay! :-)

Are these edible? Just curious. Not that I plan to eat any. LOL!

There was a thread started last year in honor of this beautiful plant: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/926156/

I wonder if Karen's plant is still going strong?

This looks like a really good one to grow. I'm going to have to look through my seeds to see if I do indeed have seeds. They are slow growers, aren't they? From seed to bloom is probably a several years?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, I will check closer on the size tomorrow. I think my bloom was a good 3 and 1/2 inches. Planted as a seed in 06, it only bloomed for the first time last summer.
3 growing seasons but only 2 calender yrs. Being in Fl yours might bloom quicker
This one is easy to start from seed, unlike obscura.
Yes I shared sds with you last yr. Don't mess with the older sds, start the fresh sds I harvested last yr and sent to you. A true perennial, it sleeps the
first yr, creeps the 2nd yr and leaped last yr

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Jackie! I will definitely start one this growing season! :-) :-)

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes, mine had blooms about 3" across.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

the seeds that I acquired were not pandurata.. I am looking for either a cutting or some seeds.. please keep me in mind for a trade.. thanks, they are beautiful, both of them.. I have been out in the country looking for our wild morning glorys here.. I found some seedlings and they are growing, but I don't think they are I. Panduratas..
Debra

Debra, You have already shared seeds with me so I will put you down
for some pandurata sds. Hopefull I will harvest lots of seeds this fall to
share with others.

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Thanks patootie for the kind offer of seed however I have grown it once before; it does not seem to like the cool coastal climate here in the UK so maybe there are other members here who would treasure some as seed is not often available.

I found the seed coat hard but after a light sanding I had excellent germination..

I did notice mine exuded a sugary sap that ants and aphids seemed to like, I wonder if the ants help to pollinate?

You might laugh years ago I spotted one that was growing along the porch in the series "charmed" I also saw ipomoea tricolor - I shouted out - ipomoea pandurata - the family just gave me a weird look

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Sadly, mine has never set seeds. I would love to trade for seeds if anyone has extras.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Kay, I will put you down for seeds this fall.
Kay and Debra, please send me a dmail and just type in Pandurata Sds as the subject. I can't keep up with requests unless I have a dmail to track them.
This pic to show you that even with 5 growing stems, the fence is not covered
with the vine.

Jackie, I would appreciate that. Let me know what you are looking for.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

No problem Kay. You know, last summer when the temps were 98 and over, this
vine woud not set any seeds. The pods just blasted. When the temps started
cooling the end of Aug, only then did the pods start holding on long enough to mature. So I wonder if your temps there make it difficult for seed pods to mature.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

That could be a factor - in fact, my tomato plants are full of buds/blooms, but I've only had TWO tomatoes - was told it's the heat and humidity causing them to abort.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Maybe the pollen from my sds will help your seedpods mature.

I have heat, I have humidity.. i have tomatoes.. I have alot.. my million babies are ripenng already, I have sliced two belgiums, they are all crowded together and corraled up with a tall snap together fence cage.. most of mine are from seeds I started in winter.. I also have mgs growing everywhere, and found three seed pds already.. I just keep missing the bloom part because I leave for work so early.. please keep posting your mg blooms..

Debra - Congrats on the tomatoes! That's really neat! I so want to try a veggie and fruit garden. I have the climate for such, but lots of bugs too. Which is always a problem here when growing plants for food. :-)

I hear ya about the MG blooms. I have to be to work by 7:30 am. Luckily, my summer job is only 10 minutes away. I am up and outside at 6:00 am every morning feeding the birds and checking the MG vines for blooms! My biggest issue besides the time is the mosquitos! They are awful, awful, AWFUL here! I feel like I need to be covered with clothing from head to toe to keep from being eaten alive. We've had so much rain here that the vacant lots around me are all underwater. I now have water-front property! LOL!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

More pandurata blooms.
