water lilly in the pond
Garden Photo's of 09 # 30
now this is a mess!! hardy hibiscus that i have been watching closely - i have sprayed this weekly and killed every bug seen - happened overnight!!
i have three more in front that have not been found - yet. second year in a row i've had to deal with this - i think i've been left no choice but to go nuclear
Bill !!! dont count on Lambs Ears not spreading unless you deadhead faithfully.
Ours has over run the contractors barrier and gets mowed regularly.
Everyone's blooms are beautiful as usual! Pixie I really love that little mini Pixie Lily! That is perfect for a fairy garden. : )
Actually the first one reminds me of a lovely shade of orchid.
Thanks Meredith, I love mini's!

Goof grief, that last post is such a set up for Victor!
LOL
dagnabbit .... I hate it when I miss the set-ups!
Great pics everybody.
willie it is best to leave those to Victor in my experience.
pixie--your blue iris in the brook looks like I. versicolor which is native, Keep its feet in the water to protect it from borer (native pest).
willie 'the yellow one' is probably I. pseudacorus an European invasive. Always pick off the seed pods (they float) & destroy them. Now an illegal plant to plant in MA. Not sure in NY, but please do your bit to keep in from spreading.
It has dissapeared in NYState either the conservation people did it or the invasive Purple Loostrife has crowded it out.
Man am I way behind! Thanks for the new thread, Celeste. Sorry I missed the setup! Of course, I love minis too. ^_^
Was very upset to find one of two major branches on my Forest Pansy redbud split. Not sure if it was the storm or what. I think it was too high for a kid to get on. I taped it as best I could but it would not go back together since it twisted at the same time. I'll see what happens.
JI.
Lovely flowers, everyone!!! Thank you for sharing them!
I will leave them up to Victor, indeed!
The large stand of yellow iris does not grow on my property, but in the creek near the fire house, down the road.
Not sure how it got there, but not sure I am allowed to go there to remove it, either. I think it might actually be a town right of way drainage creek.
I have a tiny clump I took from there many years ago in the yard that does not do anything, and, usually, I cut the flowers all off to bring inside for a vase. Maybe that is why they don't spread on me.
Now that you mention it, I think I seem to recall that it was an unwelcomed invasive.
Also, I am not a fan of Loosestrife ..... at all ......
The JI i was watching bloom in order to ID it had flopped its head down, too heavy for the stem I guess.
In straightening it and staking it I shredded one side.
Wish I could just leave momnature alone.
Thats a new Rhudebeckia Moreno about to open and Queen of the Night

Anyone in the town departments to whom you could drop a hint? They love ditches as they like water. At least they could have someone from the local garden club remove seedpods.
Victor, not 'Indian Giver'(purple) looks like 'Pandoras Box' which opens early and has a slight fragrance. BTW that JI is beautiful!!
Oh yeah! Thanks Celeste. I knew it was one of the gifts from you!!
Now that is a very pretty Cosmo!!!
wha, It looks like your Hibiscus is suffering the same fate as mine. It's the larvae of the Hibiscus Sawfly. I've been diligently spraying mine with Neem Oil since the new growth started but it looks like they've still been able to hatch and munch through the leaves. Mine looked so terrible last year, it still bloomed but the foliage was decimated. I'm thinking of digging mine up and pitching it rather than using the toxic arsenal.
Here is a link to the BugFiles entry. http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/901/
Dyane thanks for the link - that is the culprit (nice word vs. alternative) - i am going to nuke'em daily before they get to the others.

I had them a few weeks back - I posted a pic of the caterpillar. Simple insecticidal soap worked.
Sorry - wrong pest. BT killed them.
Pixie you crack me up.... and Jen if you could save me some seed from that cosmos!! really different!!
Yes, that's a nice one. Cool fall color. Would go nice with helenium and gaillardia.
Ok, I'll try(to remember) to save some seeds for ya.
victor what is BT?
Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt), a bacteria that acts as an organic pesticide on caterpillars and larvae.
i'll be getting some tomorrow - thx dyane
