CLOSED: Free Seed for Newbies!! Come on in!! New Thread 06/13/09

I know you hear whip-o-wills. That's what I miss living in GA and before that in FL. We have chuck-will's-widow here. They aren't as melodious. Can't wait to see your pictures as you get your beds planted.

I have got the plants setting in front of the greenhouse just waiting LOL. OH I surely will post pictures.

Flushing, NY(Zone 6b)

Sherri, yes, 'Elle' is a hybrid tea. It's got some nice blooms, especially the new ones as in the photo. Two other features are the fantastic fragrance and the foliage. The leaves are really large, glossy and a nice deep green. The whole plant is just very attractive and healthy-looking.

'Opening Night' is my other hybrid tea. Maybe not as striking overall. The leaves are smaller and new growth starts off with a yellowish tinge, later becoming light olive. It's less floriferous for me, forming just one bud at a time at the end of each branch. However, the flowers are huge, fragrant and long-lasting.

Sorry, I guess this is off-topic but you got me going. :)

I am so glad to see all of you.
Flower I cant wait to see the pictures. I have been so busy here seems it rains so much that when there is a break in it at all I just have to go go go....
Top of murray hill. we cant get off topic here....topic is topic, it seems an especially great topic when someone just cant hold the words back if anyone wants my two cents,,,,and you have some beautiful roses. I am thinking I have an Elle but I am not sure, I have to read the tag and let you know.

We all know this is a seed giving thread but you can only say so much about seed until you get flowers or what ever from them so we generally talk about most anything, so there is no really off topic for us. We all enjoy hearing about each other adventures with flowers or like what I am doing , putting in a patio and flower beds.

Heck I think if anyone looked back you would find me and Flower talking about sea shells in Florida most anything seems to go here!!

Hi Everyone

Top, I loved the 'Opening Night' The petal shape is lovely. And so glad to hear Elle is fragrant. That usually puts it on my want list. That's one of my next years projects. I have a great spot for about a dozen hybrid teas. I have Mr. Lincoln and Double Delight. Both new. Another one I enjoy is a climber 'Night Owl'. I have a Huldine clematis climbing with him. No blooms on the clem yet.

Keep those pic coming! :)

Hi Arejay

I forgot. I wanted to ask about your purple iris. What type is that? Is it a Japanese iris? Beautiful. I'm trying to educate myself on the iris types. The only ones I'm familiar with are the old Bearded types. The Japanese iris has captured my imagination. Luckily not my pocket book yet. Well a little maybe. LOL

Sherri

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I believe they are Jap Irises and they are 4 and 5 feet tall and taller. But don't go opening the wallet. I can trade some with you.
Robin

Wow! That's exciting. Now I have to find the time to make up my "have" list and look at your "want" list. What do you need for your project?

Sherri

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Well Sherry,
THat depends on which project. There are some things I would like to have but anything I dont already have is great!! Maybe even a different color of something I do have. I want things as easy to find as purple Queen, lemon grass( Mine is fighting with me) plant and harder to find like Red Kew Lavender,Angel fishing rod..Oh and there is a basil I cant recall the name of it. Pink large flowers. Wandering jew, swedish ivy's a beafsteak plant see so many....

Hi Arejay,

I have a 'Chihuly' rose. I bought too many. Floribunda. They are still small from Heritage. Own roots not grafted. I liked the artist they were named after and since I couldn't afford his art...well you know the rest. :)

seray,
I would take one . I love roses and am just starting to get them acquired. Any thing you would like in trade?

Hi Flower

I have an extra for you. I'm trying to increase my propagation skills (from clueless to Alright!) I will be taking cuttings from my 'Rainbow' Knockout roses. These would be great along a sunny pathway. Mine won't quit blooming. If I can get them to root I will have some of those as well.

Once I move all the tropicals out of the fence row this fall I want that whole area to be used for cut flowers. Nothing like a big blooming bouquet on the table. I have dahlias, glads and daylilies Nothing else so I'm open for any type of perennials that will put on a show.

The purple iris in the picture is a Siberian, not a Japanese. Japanese bloom after the Siberians, in zone 5 they are just in bud. The foliage is heavier then grasslike. Here's a picture of pseudocarus. Yellow flag iris.

For anyone who would like to try Japanese Iris, I will have some to divide after they bloom. They are a noid. I purchased as Shiro Nihonkai at Home Depot, they were something else.

Thank You Mittsy,
Is it still Siberian if the foliage is litght in bulk I mean and it doesnt seperate or it hasnt .They are very tall. some of them 4 feet at least.
Hi Seray,
those are so nice the orange one. It is like a painting. You can just take the picture and blow it up and frame it , it will be as good as any old pricey painting!!
Or you could try paining, I tried drawing when I found a painting on the Cape I absolutly loved and couldnt see myself pay the price for. Dmail me Seray We will figure out a trade.
Flower, that will be nice on your new path!!Yeah it will look like the sunset has made its home in your yard,

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

seray,
I have some glads that I can send to you for the roses.

Yes arejay they would be beautiful along my pathway. We were gone yesterday and was such a pretty day even though is was a scorcher and so didn't get to work on it and then this morning we get up it is black out and thunder rummbling, hasn't rained yet, but look for it soon so unless this runs past us we won't get to work on it today either. :(((((

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Well then that will give you time to search for things to fill it with!!
Mittsy I was going to say 5 ft but I didn't measure them and I dint want to exaggerate them but I think they are that tall some of them ...speaking of tall..I have a delphinium out there that is more than 6 feet tall it isn't flowered yet but it is about to and a tall German bearded iris that has to be5 feet anyway I cant wait to see them bloom , they are both just on the verge of showing there stuff!!

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Can you take a picture of the delphinium leaves? I planted some from seed in compost and I can't tell which are weeds and which are seedlings.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Sure!! Brb and in the meantime see if you know what this is.

Hey Arejay, the Echinops arrived today - thank you very much!

I'll find a place for it once there's a reasonable break in the rain. I can't believe our weather this year. I don't think there's been a completely sunny day for the past 2 1/2 weeks or more, and hardly a day without at least a shower and often a lot more than that. Today we got about an inch and the water is starting to seep into the basement.

I have a sunny area near the garage that tends to be hot and dry. This spring I planted some stuff that I thought would appreciate that. But after all this rain, the Globe Thistle just might have to replace my poor little Gaillardia. That one struggled the most after I did my spring plantings, then the rains started just as it seemed to be getting settled in. After all the soakings and cloudy days, two thirds of the leaves have withered away and the rest look droopy and bedgraggled. It's trying to grow flower buds but no new leaves. Today I had it covered with a 5 gallon bucket to deflect some of the downpour.
