Drooling over Thom's clem & kalmia---& you're so right about the roses---so many are just waterlogged. Patti, Ruby Sultan is so pretty---loved that blue iris, Pixie, & Victor, all nice photos---the rose looks like one of my NOIDs....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

seriously am I the only person to loose a coreopsis??? the mayfield giant I planted last year did not come back... all this talk about how they spread... sheesh

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I lost one a couple of years ago. It just didn't turn up after doing great for a few years, no spreading anywhere.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Robin... I love the peony pic!

Victor...it's amazing to me that you have all of those mantis in your yard. Neat.

Allison...I've learned the hard way that not all coreopsis area as hardy as they imply. I just had to get a Limerock Ruby when they came out and they were touted as being hardy to zone 6 (or maybe 5, I don't remember). But now the general consensus is that it's zone 8, unless you're part of a small, lucky few. the same goes for american dream and a couple of others. I have not personally known mayfield giant, but I wonder if that's the case with it as well.

I have just recently read a DG Article (Tuesday) on perennial longevity (by LarryR) which lists coreopsis as a short-lived perennial (2 to 5 year).

In case you missed his article:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2498/

I found the listing pretty interesting. Only thing I would wish for is a more comprehensive and exhaustive listing. Excellent article.

For the Record: Both of my coreopsis clumps disappeared after about 4 or 5 years. Though the heliopsis lives on.

Nice photos all over! I am really liking coral/peach climbing roses, the yellow lupines, autumn moon.

The neighbors across the street have a beautiful climbing peach/coral colored rose blooming its little heart out at the moment. Looks awesome from across the street. Maybe I can sneak in a snap of it to show you all.

Yay! for the new thread! Whew!!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Nice stuff, there, Jo Ann!!

The sculptures are great accents!

I usually do not like what I see stuck into gardens around here, most of which hook up to an air pump and inflate!

Carolina Lupine has a long life and hybrids a short life cycle. Now I want some of those YELLOW Carolina Lupine seeds.......................

I hate them. DH keeps threating to get one at x-mas, I keep shooting it down.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, in all fairness, they do have a house FULL of toddlers.

I can tolerate that more than the renters 4 houses down the other way, who, when they let their two tiny dogs out to back, ruin the serenity of the neighborhood. The dogs sound like they are being hanged from their collars. Not just the run of the mill barking.

When I first heard the shrill, I ran down there thinking one of them was caught on the fence. Nope. Just the two of them standing there barking at a tree!

It wouldn't be so bad if it were only for 5 minutes, but they leave them out for hours. Then, the kids taunt them, on top of it.

Maybe the SPCA can do something. Cannot be good for the health of the dog to be so stressed like that .... esp. such tiny ones.

There is not no law ordinance?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I would hope so.

I was more tolerant of the barking BEFORE I learned they were renters.

Not that renters are always bad people, just don't think they think "Gee, I have to live next to these people for the rest of my (or their) life, maybe I should be as CONSIDERATE of their solitude as they are of mine."

I don't like to create tension with my neighbors .... unless it's over how many perennials are too many perennials for a front yard.

And, yes, I have had the cops called on me due to the incessant barking of my dog! The one that I had to put down after 17 years (it was definitely time) just three months prior. Someone being an A%& (I think an ex- had her friend call it in ... she didn't know the dog had passed).

Odd thing about that was, that it was obviously a vindictive, false report, but the police couldn't be interested at all in pursuing the false report. Even WITH the phone number of the individual who made the call.

One thing I do know is: It takes ALL kinds to make the world go 'round.

^_^

OK, the sun is now out and it's almost 60ºF .... Finally!

This wacky weather! Good send it east!

Pixie my coreopsis 'Jethro Tull' didn't come back this year :( The only one that seems to be a sure thing is 'Moonbeam' for me. My first iris opened yesterday ^_^

Everything looks great!!!

Pixie I love that hibiscus on the other thread, looks like one that Longwood gardens had, bloom bigger than my hand.

Willie, thanks for the link to that article, I'm real upset columbines have a short life.
I can't stand those blow up things either esp when they're on the lawn of a McMansion, there's a duplex on the other side of town where the front lawn is maybe 5X10 and they stuff in every blow up decoration for every holiday. Glad don't live next to them.

Can you complain to the landlord about the renters?

My coreopsis re-seeds enough that it is essentially long-lived.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I really liked the plastic bowl pots that I designed last year. I placed anywhere from 3-4 of the small to mini hosta in each planter, along with a small/dwarf shrub, or evergreen. So, this year I did the same. Only have 2 completed so far, I will probably create 2-3 more...I hope to atleast.

In this first planter I put: Creeping Speedwell (Veronica repens 'Sunshine), Heuchera 'Petite Pearl Fairy,' 2 hosta ('Fire Island' and 'Winter Lightning') and for my choice of small/dwarf specimen I placed 'White Bud' Pinus mugo. 'Winter Lightning' is the streaked/mottled/splotchy looking hosta.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

And in this planter I placed: 'Rosy' Maidenhare Fern (Adianum hispidulum), 2 hosta ('Rootin Tootin' and 'LS Dimpled Darling'), Scotch Moss (Sagina subulata 'Aurea'), and for my choice of small/dwarf specimen I placed 'White Pygmy' Chamaecyparis pisifera.

These planters already have a nice sized drainage hole, but I cut out 3 more in each of the planters. The planters that I potted up last year all did fine, I need to take pics of them so I can compare their progress. I only had one hosta not thrive, but it was a pretty crappy TC'd plug when I got it; so I was sort of expecting it to not make it through the winter...but it did...it's just super puny.

Jo Ann... your collages are looking great. Rozanne is very pretty.

Willie... Thanks for the link to the article. The ones that I've read the most about not truly being hardy are pretty much all the pink or red ones. But, I think that saying it's the hybrids is pretty true.

Dahlia .... I love "sunshine". It looks like a dahlia, is it a hardy one?

Thom.... great job on the planters!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dahlias and flax look great, dnut.

Royal Candles is cool, Jo Anne.

Nice containers, Thom. Nice foliage contrasts.

Beautiful color, Jen.
