New June flowers thread

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Claypa, I love Baby Bunting. I lost a few of my mini hosta this winter. The small vole cages heaved. I have to check and see which I lost. The slugs are out in force already. Are they bothering your hosta?

I was just thinking yesterday that I'm not seeing any Cardinal Flower in my bed. Thanks for the foliage pix. I'll look again tomorrow.

Claypa, I almost lost my big Clethra this winter. It's finally leafing out. No buds though. But I do have 2 babies which I stuffed in cages filled with leaves over the winter and they are fine & do have buds.

I was too lazy to dig in the mulch for the tag on this one.

Here's something you don't see every day, a foot long Hosta bloom. This is the bloom of a Bressingham Blue. Last year I was astounded because the bloom was 8"!

Here's a mystery. I have no clue what this is. Does anyone recognize it?

Here's another one.

So far it's just those little slugs, little holes - the hostas look great as long as you don't get too close! My tags are mostly buried too, but usually I can find the ID from my journal page.

The clethras died back by half but are coming back really well. One looked chlorotic and pale so I gave it a little milorganite, which has iron in it. They responed pretty quickly, just a few days they looked better.

Just holler if you want some cardinal flower seedlings - my idea is to pot some up and be able to send out bare roots next spring. It's a shallow-rooted plant.

Stormy, it looks like a big clover, maybe Trifolium rubens or something like that

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

You're right Claypa. That's it! I don't remember buying or planting this, but I did a zip code report on it!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I was thinking the same thing it looked like a large clover head. But I don't know any plants that look like that. Claypa you flower are just beautiful. Do you have many varieties of the mini hosta?
Stormyla, whats a zip code report?
Got a new Iris bloom, must have come from one of the swaps last year, maybe Critters fall swap. It's a real beauty anyone recognize it?

onewish my neighbor just planted them and left them alone and every year they are as blue as can be. I guess the soil is very acidic.

Hart those are beautiful daylilies on the site you sent. Of course the one I like the best is a bit out of my budget. (alot out of my budget) but they had plenty of others to choose from.

Stormy thanks for the info on Astilbe. I have a wooded area I could put them in but I would need to check on them regularly because it is on a slope so it tends to be dry shade. Interstingly I saw some in Holland Michigan in direct sun last year and I asked the landscaper how they kept them in that location. She said she put a spongy material in the soil and watered them at least twice a day. I was amazed to see them in the sun without any damage.

claypa how much shade does the clethra alnifolia need? I want to put some in my semi-native bed but the sight gets direct morning sun. I have seen them growing in wooded areas but they are in heavily shaded areas.

Stormy, could that plant be this:

http://aquiya.skr.jp/zukan/Ptilotus_exaltatus_Joey.jpg

This is Ptilotus "Joey," a new plant from Australia.

The flowers look way too big to be Trifolium rubens.

If it is Ptilotus, be sure to save the seeds. They're expensive as all get out.

Claypa, love the striping on that lily, Baby Bunting(in the words of my 2 yr old) It's adorable! Gaillardia will not grow in my yard... I tried 3 different places and they never came back, what's up with that???

Holly LOVE the color on that iris.

Stormy, be sure to read what I wrote about the ptilotus. I'm sure that's what your mystery plant is.

A few flowers today. Here's some wave petunias.

Aside form Stella and Happy Returns, and wild ones, I only have Golden Accent (on left here) in bloom so far. (pic from last year) The DLs from Ruby and John at hart's swap, have grown great.

They did bring some nice daylilies, 'Suzy Wong' (sp.?) is a great plant. Wisdomseeker, the Clethras will sprout and grow just about anywhere in the "wilds" but they do better with sun and water, but not hot and dry. They don't bloom as well in deep shade, but they will grow there.

Flowerjen, I was surprised the gaillardia came back again, the way everyone talks about them. I think they need as much sun as possible, I don't know...

Holly, the other small hostas here are 'Feather Boa', 'Geisha', and 'Ginko Craig', but I'm not sure if they're classed as minis or not - maybe 'Ginko Craig' is. I have quite a few with small leaves that become really large plants, I was fooled and will have to move them around. This pic is ginko craig - amazing how the slugs won't touch some hostas, but will eat others

I just looked those hostas up, and 'Ginko Craig' is not called a mini - it's also spelled differently than the Ginkgo tree, which is kind of maddening...?

Claypa, you sure do have the hosta magic dust. Those are so pretty.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly, That Siberian Iris is just gorgeous. A zip code report is done from within a plant files page. Towards the bottom of the page it will ask if you've had success growing the plant at your zipcode. If you click yes, then it shows on the PF page as growing successfully in your city. But also, on your person info page, your zipcode reports will be totalled. If you click on your total, then all of the plants you have reported will be listed. It's a very abbreviated form of a journal or record of what you've planted. But it's easy and automatic.

Click on my name and scroll down to zipcode reports and see my list.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Hart, that is a beautiful daylily and I love it's new name!! I will pass on the yellow Mullein, thanks though. I'm pretty sure that my plant is trifolium rubins. The only way that I make zip code reports is from plant tags or packing slips from stuff I've planted. I'm way behind on making them now!!!

Jen, That Asiatic lily is beautiful.

Sally, Love that red Daylily.

Claypa, I know what you mean about trying to sort through the mini, dwarf and small hostas. Lot's of smalls have tiny leaves but can get 16 to 24" across. I love my minis. I keep adding more.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Yes Stormyla, I thought you were talking about using a zip code report to find what the plant was. Like putting in your Zip Code and getting a list of plants native to your area.
You are right about that iris, both that one and the yellow one that bloomed earlier are gorgeous. Not sure where they came from either a DG swap or maybe my HGHA raffle table.
Claypa, I had ordered several small hosta for a living wreath. When it was time to actually plant the wreath I only had two varieties Hope and Blue Mouse Ears. Some of them said 6-10 inches and Ric thought they were too big so I didn't use them. I gave one (Dixie Girl) away and lost another. If the wreath works out this summer I want to try again next spring and I will be looking for hosta that don't get bigger than 8 inches and would prefer ones that only get about 6 inches. So I'm on the lookout. I ordered a Mini Hosta collection and some of them were quite big as they weren't necessary small just smaller than the original variety. LOL
Here is a new pic of that Ramona bloom. It is the same bloom that I posted a couple of days ago. See how much the color changed in just a few days? That difference isn't the camera or lighting.

And a new shot of the Honeysuckle, It will probably get moved next year and I hope it does well.

I had to stand on my toes and hold the camera as far above my head as possible to get this shot. This is La Hybrid "Fangio" lily. It's a beautiful wine color. Planted 2 falls ago.

Holly, that clematis and Honeysuckle are beautiful. Is that the one you're thinking of putting on a bike?
Here's the Fangio in the bed. They are increasing very nicely. PF said they would get 36" tall!! They are over 6'.

Here's Tiarella Heronswood Mist. A very pretty but tempermental plant.

Thumbnail by stormyla
Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Did I say that I had Stella that needed dividing? If I didn't have such a backlog in planting I'd do it now.

Thumbnail by stormyla
Mechanicsville, MD

Stormyla all I can say about Fangio is WOWWWW!!! what an amazing color and great photo too. My tiarella is stoplight and i need to move it because it has barely grown and with all the rain we have had i am sure lack of water is not the problem.

Hollyanns that is quite a difference in color. it is still very pretty though.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Here's another group of that Heliopsis dwarfing the Coppertina Ninebark.

Thumbnail by stormyla
Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Wisdomskr, too much rain will stunt the growth and may even kill Heuchs and Tiarellas. I lost 2 Heronswood Mists to that last year. They prefer dry shade and good drainage.

Purple smoke bush starting to color up. This is the one that got uprooted in the Toronado last year. I replanted and cut it back severely. It's doing better than the non traumatized one.

Thumbnail by stormyla
Shenandoah Valley, VA

I had no idea trifolium rubens flowers were anywhere near that big! I have seeds I bought at a T&M clearance a while back and have never planted. Guess I need to get those out and plant them.

The lily is gorgeous, the heliopsis is gorgeous but that nine bark! Wow. What stunning foliage. Does that get very big?

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Lady in Red Hydrangea just about in full bloom now. The white blooms have now started to turn blue. They are deepening in color every day. Towards the late summer, they will change to pale pink. By fall they will deepen to a dark rose. The stems and foliage are starting to turn red as well now.

Thumbnail by stormyla
Mechanicsville, MD

I do have the tiarella's in dry shade so maybe it is the drainage. I have a heuchera in the same bed and it came back full but not much larger. I love purple smoke bush but have yet to put one in my yard. Does the color vary depending on the amount of sun it receives?

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Hart, The Ninebark should get about 5 x 5'. I have them across the back of the bed alternating with Diablo Ninebarks. My neighbor has been killing off all of the shrubs along our property line with the undiluted Roundup he uses once a year on his weeds. He's creating one barren wasteland that is a germination paradise for every invasive weed species. I have been creating a shrub border to replace them inside of my property line.

Wisdomskr, try lifting those Heuchs and Tiarellas and replanting them higher. Mix some peat and something like chicken grit into the soil to loosen it. Don't use Gypsum, it will make it worse. I have several that need lifting now. I also have some that heaved and need lowering. A gardener's work is ever done!!!

I don't know for sure about the color of the smoke bush. Both of mine turn a nice purple, but this one turns and blooms earlier as it gets more sun earlier in the day and all afternoon until sun set. It gets south and west exposure. The other one gets about 2 to 3 hours less sun a day. That one gets west and north exposure.

Mechanicsville, MD

The area I was considering would get east and south sun. It wouldn't get much after about noon.
