syrumani, I loooove Gum Bubble, so cute...but there are still too many of the older Rob's that I want, especially the really small ones.
Jannich, I have a very small Bed Bug, if you don't find one by the end of the summer, let me know, by then mine should be big/mature enough to share a few leaves.
June Flowers II
Jan - I've got a few post-separated-from-momma-leaf babies of Rob's Outer Orbit. Not big enough now, but maybe in a few months I can send you a baby?
I'm thinking of what Rob's plants I can get if I enter a series in a show . . . I thought a 'theme' would be nice . . . I've got Rob's Blue Socks, so I thought maybe Rob's Penguin Suit and Rob's Plaid Skirt would make a decent clothes trio. Then for animals I've got Rob's Suicidal Squirrel, Rob's Combustible Pigeon, and I think I have a Rob's Mad Cat . . . but that wouldn't be a good 3rd - it doesn't have variegated foliage like the other 2 . . . maybe Rob's Kitten Caboodle? That would take care of an animals trio . . .
(I know, too much free time at work!)
I love Rob's Suicidal Squirrel, first for the name and then for the plant...definitely on my want list!
Great! Thanks guys,I would appreciate the plant/leaves of those 2 AV's.What a cool idea for showing plants Nichole...LOL.Where in the world do they come up with the names of those Rob's plants. For such beautiful plants and flowers the names are just to strange.^_^
Hi Lynn,I can't wait to see the Jack Evans bloom. It's to funny,I gave/traded all the sinningia I grew from seed and have most or all of the ones Gail grew from seed. Our plants sure do travel around the states.^_^
Love your Jealous heart strep!
Everyone staying cool? It's 99 degress here in southern Al. and with the heat index of 104.To darn hot for me!
Hi Jan,
I'll start a Jealous Heart for you for the fall. It's about 100 degrees here the last 2 days also.
oh Lynn, that is beautiful. i have never tried one of the florist glox. might have to try one.thats a beauty.
bonnie
Pretty! Thought it was another strep for a minute with that color pattern-LOL! Are the difficult to maintain?
Thanks Bonnie ^_^.
Bonnie, the seeds we ordered were not officially florist's gloxinia............but were the hybrids under sinningia seed from The Gesneriad Society.........some were peloric, Jack Evans, Charles Lawn, Red with white dots, etc..................listed under their hybrid seed under sinningia.
No Jan,
They are super easy. After they finish blooming and show signs of resting you gradually cut down on water until the top dies. Then put the pot in a shady or dark area, give it a tablespoon of water every week or two,and when new growth resumes, move to light and treat like an AV.They can get very large though.
That one is a Jack Evans.
No room for very large here! LOL Guess I'll just have to drool over yours for now ^_^
Sigh...just remembered, I used to have a whole room for plants--sigh...
Jack Evan seed was always my favorite one in red.................
By the way, I got some new information from David Thompson on the florist's gloxinia I ordered from him. I used to do what Lynn said about with holding water, etc..........
David says to take all the leaves off except the bottom leaves until you see new growth coming out of the top of the tuber.......then remove bottom leaves. (I never miss an opportunity to cut out the center top and root it after it blooms, too)
Phoebe,
They aren't any larger than a standard AV,but need more headroom when they bloom.Mine sits on a top shelf below a ceiling fixture. It stretchs a little for light, but since I am not growing for show it doesn't bother me.
Gail,if you use DT's method, does that mean you keep it under light and water it normally and never let it go dormant, like the minis ??
He sent instructions with the florist's gloxinia when he sent them.............he also posted it on his description so if he sells anymore I will go back and read. But my understanding is that you do keep on watering...........under light..............leave only the bottom leaves on until you see new growth coming out the top of the tuber.
At one time I had shelves of the tiny sinningias......and they never went dormant..........the tiniest I kept in vases with saran on top..........the next size I just put under the lights..........and they didn't go dormant..........I confess I don't know much about the smaller sinningias.......
All I know is that they do not go dormant unless they are unhappy, usually from a severe drying out. They resprout just like the big ones.
Gorgeous pictures Wild_Rose!! I especially love the Episcias.
Lynn,Your sinningia Jack Evans is a beauty!!!!! I love it when a little seed the size of dust grows into a beauitful plant like that.
Very pretty Karen!
jannich, we may have to grow from seed again this fall!! That Jack Evans is one of the prettiest I have seen.
Hi Gail,I was thinking the same thing. Those plants are just to beautiful!.
I have been trying to pay dues on line for AVSA, First Class and The Gesneriad Society.......they don't make it easy to do it on line...........I can still order seed from The Gesneriad Society........make a list of winners you know of and send to me........and I will make my list, too.
Look what I found from David Thompson about the florist's gloxinias.............or big sinningias...
Welcome to my auction! You are bidding on a young plant of Sinningia speciosa 'Carla' in a 2.5 inch pot. This is the familiar florist "gloxinia," and this is one of my own hybrids. New for 2009. This is a clonally reproduced named plant, so it will produce plants exactly like the photo, unlike plants that are grown from seed. It is easy to grow on windowsills or under lights, and its cultural requirements are very similar to those of African violets. It becomes a large plant, 16-18 inches in diameter. Provide very bright light to keep the size of the leaves down--but not so bright as to burn the leaves. Flowering is spectacular in these plants because they produce all of their flowers over a period of a few weeks in a massive display. After flowering, all but a few lower leaves should be removed and the plant left alone until a new shoot rises from the tuber. Then, the rest of the old leaves and stem should be removed to provide room for the newly rejuvenated plant to put on another spectacular show!
Jannich, all the credit for the beauty of that plant goes to you!! All I did was keep it going...LOL. You and Gail must have grown a lot of beautys from this seed!!
I used to grow from seed and also hybridize a little, but that's not in my plans for the near future.Maybe someday....sigh.
Gail, thanks for the info. from DT.When he says "left alone",I am thinking he means no water?? Maybe I will email him.
Lynn
Please do email him and find out............
Ibrabec, the sinningia speciosa is spectacular! What a beauty. Good growing jannich from seed, too which you are known for.
WildRose...thanks for sharing what's blooming at your house. So pretty!
I think I'll start another bloom thread. I've been so busy I haven't taken the time for photos lately but took a couple yesterday.
strep Raspberry Splash -
Thanks GL! This thread has 157 posts making it difficult for dial up people. Love Raspberry Splash!
Gl,
That's one pretty Strep.!!
Jan,
There is nothing mediocre about your Yukako photo !!
Jan, your picture of Yukako is awesome - if you want a different effect, try using a back drop, either a piece of black cloth or black posterboard, preferably without any shine to it so that the flash won't reflect. That will make it stand out with no background distractions like Goldleafs.
I am no pro, I can't even make it past the camera set up BEFORE pushing the button, but you look like you have the close up focus down to an art. I wish you would come over and take a pic of my Hoya camphorifolia flowers, about 20 little pink flowers, the whole bunch no bigger than the size of a quarter. I have a pretty decent Canon PowerShot, and older model but still a good one, and I do everything the way I am supposed to but all I get is a fuzzy pink blob!
I'll be right over! LOL! I have a Cannon Power Shot--does yours have a Macro setting?
