Ok so I've managed to aquire myself another baby spider plant; I've successfully rooted ones with the white edges and full green ones in water; within a day you could see their roots beginning to grow. After 2 or 3 weeks in water they had plenty of roots so I potted them (I think there was abour 13 and all 13 were fine).
However now I've got one with a white stripe down the middle (no mother plant just the baby), and it's been sitting in water for about a week and there are no signs of root growth, has anyone got any ideas?
Rooting a baby spider plant
Ok well some plants do take longer to root then others. It all depends on the mother plant, if the mother plant was not as healthy as she could have been then the baby cutting will take longer to root and become healthy itself. Some cuttings take up to 6 weeks to root so just be patient and keep going with it. If like me you are a little impatient then rooting powder is a little miracle! I always use it when growing cuttings and it does speed up the process alot. Its up to you whether you wait or use rooting hormone which is cheap to buy :) hope everything goes well with your little plant :)
My experience of rooting hormone is my cuttings tend to die quicker.
I was just thinking it was strange that the others at least started showing something so quickly where as this one hasn't. The baby doesn't look unhealthy, neither did the mother plant. I guess I'll just wait and see :).
O, ive always had good experiences with rooting hormone. Strange. But yeh i guess you will have to wait and see what happens, i really hope it grows for you, Lets us know what happens with it :)
I will but it may be months down the line haha.
My mam has also had good experience with rooting hormone - I used the same stuff (i.e. her bottle) under her direction and I still have no luck!
o how strange! Well if water works fine for you then why change what you do. I only use it because im so impatient and i want roots like yesterday! lol
Hope all goes well :)
I've noticed the same thing with the variegated spider. It does take longer for the roots to form.
Good luck and don't give up on it yet.
I've rooted varigated ones before (white down the edge of the leaf) and they rooted as quickly as the pure green spider plants. This one I've got at the minute has a white strip down the middle of the leaf and still no roots or any signs of root growth.
Oh I checked it last night and there are the starts of ONE root, it's about 2mm long but at least it's starting. YAY!
Yay! I love it when you notice the first little root! Your plant obviously likes to take its time to grow! Atleast now you can be more sure that its going to grow. It ovbiously just wanted to take its time and make you sweat! lol Glad your plant is finally rooting. Good luck wit it :)
Thanks :). I'm going on holiday in a few weeks so I'd have liked to have roots before then but it doesn't look like it; never mind haha.
Doesnt look like what? :) where u going on holiday too?
Doesn't look like...it would have roots.
Well last week when I looked it had ONE root about 2mm in length; when I checked back a day or two later the root was about 3-4cm long. It still only has the one root, but at least it's growing.
I'm off to Lanzarote :)
O yay! Its growing pretty fast then, and one root is better than none, Just think when u get back from holiday it wil have loads of roots and be ready to plant :)
Ooo never been lanzarote but always wanted to go. Hope you have fun :)
Thank you :)
My parents went a couple of years ago and they said it wasn't "pretty", but it was in away. It is volcanic so it's not grass and flowers pretty but they said they enjoyed it; we are even going to the same hotel due to their recommendation.
The spider plant has another root coming on so it's growing at least.
o wow, sometimes its nice to go somewhere thats pretty but not the traditional pretty, with flowers and stuff. Hope you have fun - im sure you will tho.
Glad your spider plant has another root :) Do you have anyone to care for it whilst your away or are you just going to make sure it has enough water to last it until you get home?
My parents can look after it whilst I'm gone, along with my millions of other plants haha.
O thats good :) Hope u have a good time :)
Thank you :)
try the water trick but add a coupple drops of miracle grow to the water. you can also try the plant food for fresh cut flowers
It took ages to first show signs of root but when it did it shot. It's been in soil for about 3 weeks and it'd had lots of new growth.
