Difference between Potting Soil & Potting Mix???

Ogden, UT

I've heard that one is better than the other for planting tomatoes and zucchini in containers. Any thoughts?

Potting mix has no soil in it. Most are made up of peat moss and peralite whereas potting soil is just that, mixed with additives. Some have peralite, some have fertilizer, some are strictly orgnic. You need to read the bags to see what is in them.

All manufacturers use different things. I doubt that anyone would plant tomatoes in potting mix. That is used mainly for seeds and seedlings I believe. OR, if you did plant in potting mix I would think you would put in your own additives such as rotted manures etc. In that regard, to each his own.

A lot of times, people will talk about "potting soil" but really most of the bagged things you buy that say they're for use in containers are technically soilless potting mix. I don't think I've ever seen anything sold in a store that was labeled for use in containers and contained actual soil, they are all soil-less potting mixes. You can also buy bagged garden soil which is not the best thing for containers in general because it doesn't drain well, but those are usually clearly labeled "garden soil".

Use potting soil for containers - do not use garden soil or loam. And they are heavy feeders too.
