How to pick zucchini

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Ok, silly question time - I have one zucchini in the garden, and DH looked at this morning and asked if we could pick it. It's big enough, but when I gave a gentle tug, it didn't come off the stem. What's the best way to pick zucchini?

Nice looking zuke! I had my first female zuke yesterday, but no males. Grr!!

Yea.... I'm starting to have some females present themselves on my squash plants --- I've had the males showing for awhile now. I wished I would have written down WHEN I planted the seeds... I know it was later than I wanted. I should have known.... I think I'll remember something...and then of course I just don't. Ugh. I should have put it on the plastic knife that I use for the plant identifier / marker.

Ok Newbie question here,
How do you tell the difference?

The males are just pretty flowers. The females have little fruits behind them which will grow into big fruits if fertilized.

Oh I went out yesterday to the garden, and picked my first yellow squash... Could not wait so I rinsed it of and ate it right then and there... It may have been small, but it was sure Yummy....

Thank you, I am sure I will have some questions to ask.
