I'm a little confused by the information I've already come across. We live in a rural area (although granted, near a highway) so I find it quite surprising that our tip curl would be caused by air pollution.
Also the branches curl down not up and aren't loosing any needles (all these trees are quite healthy).
Is there another explanation for what is going on with these trees?
And if there is anything I could do?
Spruce Tip Curl
It's a long shot but, have you applied any herbicides including weed n feed in the area?
We only moved here 2 years ago, but we've never applied anything.
It's hard to see in your picture--is it just the new growth that's curling downward? I've seen other people post that new growth on spruces will tend to do that and it's nothing to worry about.
I don't see anything wrong with the tree in that picture--as long as it looks healthy I don't think there is anything to worry about. The younger branches probably just aren't quite strong enough yet to hold up the weight, so they bend down a little bit. I wouldn't worry unless you start to see needles dropping, changes in color, etc.
That may well be what is going on :) I will stop worrying (we have 4 or 5 trees on our property that look the same). I've just been told several times that there is something wrong with the trees and I just want to make sure they are healthy as they are still young.
