plants around tree

Canton, MA

Good morning,

I have a large crab apple tree with thick roots in that area. Because it will be difficult to dig deep, my friend suggested that I plant annuals. Are there any perennials that come in a small pot? I would need approximately three flats of impatiens which would be quite costly.

Thanks,
Karen

sedums are perinials and like shade. sorta a ground cover but do flower.

hostas might work too they also like shade and come in different colors.

daylilies also are a good bet and they clump eventually and can be divided.

these are come in small sizes

If you really want impatiens....they're on sale at Home Depot this week for $8.99 a flat, regularly $12.99 a flat. You could overwinter some in the house, then root the starts you need in early Spring next year. Just a little red cent!

YOu should be able to buy perennials in small pots so they are easy to plant even amongst the roots. Dont let that stop you.

I have a huge old Laurel Leaf Willow in my back yard and grow lots of perennials underneath it.

Personally I would rather spend my $$ on penennials that wont have to be replaced every year rather than annuals.
